Back To The Future – Discovering Your Blessings
2020 … another new year, another new decade!
Many of us are busy trying to adhere to those New Year’s resolutions we made. You
know, the classic ones like lose weight, stop smoking, limiting social media, getting
more exercise. Looking forward and making changes that will make us better …
physically, mentally, and emotionally. All for an improved future you.
This year I decided not to look forward, but rather take some time to look backward. In the movie “Back To The Future,” Marty McFly by mistake goes back in time and soon determines that if some events in the past don’t occur, most importantly the blessing of his parent’s marriage, his life would be dramatically affected … he wouldn’t exist! I got to thinking, what are the blessings in my life that I might have taken for granted and never thought about. Of course, some were very obvious. But, when I looked back on the twists and turns my life has taken, I discovered that many were unexpected and not planned. A chance meeting of someone that became a mentor and changed my life path, being at the right place at the right time to learn about a career opportunity, gaining new confidence by taking an unexpected risk and doing something I didn’t think I could do. All unplanned events that resulted in my life taking a turn for the good and setting me in a new direction. That’s when I realized these life changing events were not just episodes but really blessings from God. We have all experienced a setback or even a tragedy in our lives. My first wife Pam was only 47 years old when she died. Looking back at that tragedy, prayer and my faith in God guided me in a direction to find the strength to move on and find happiness and love again with my wife Kaye … a true blessing from God. I’m sure if you look back you will find many of the good turns your life has taken can be attributed to blessings from God. In Proverbs 16:9 it says, “The human heart plans the way, but the Lord directs the steps.” I encourage you to take a trip back in time and give thanks for the many blessings from God that affected your life path … including the not-so-obvious ones. Like me, it will give you a whole new understanding of how God controls your “steps” through life. And here’s some good news, you won’t even need a time-traveling DeLorean built by Professor Emmet Brown. I wish you a happy and healthy 2020 with many Blessings. Lee Nuttall – Grand Knight

January 24 – Unplugged: Prayer, Praise, and Podcasts Come join us in the St. Colette Youth Center on Friday at 7pm as we grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus. This January 24th event will include discussion on our next segment of The Wild Goose video series on the Holy Spirit, focusing on The Spirit Convicts. “And when he comes, he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation: sin, because they do not believe in me” - John 16:8 This series is brought to you by the Dooley Knights of Columbus for the Building of the Domestic Church initiative (families!). Come enjoy fellowship, watch The Wild Goose video series, and break out into discussion groups to share our thoughts and lives with each other. In addition to the dove, the Wild Goose is a Celtic Christian symbol for the Holy Spirit. Unlike the comforting symbol for the Holy Spirit as a dove, the Wild Goose represents how the Holy Spirit can sweep in unexpectedly, leading in astonishing directions, surprising us, and disturbing our plans like a wild and unpredictable goose.

Sweatshirt Drive A Huge Success
Dooley Donates to Food for The Poor The Dooley Council was able to donate just over
$6000 to Father Tom Bouterie’s Food for the Poor
outreach. The funds were the result of a Dooley
Council contribution and donations from individual
Council members. Matching donations from other
Food for The Poor benefactors resulted in enough
funds to build two double homes in Honduras for
disadvantaged families.
The annual Dooley Council Christmas Sweatshirt drive resulted in the collection of 405 sweatshirts for Holy Cross – an all-time record. Holy Cross informed us that the 405 sweatshirts represented 10% of the total donated to Holy Cross. Our sincerest thanks to all the parishioners and the Boy Scouts from Troop 271 in Livonia that donated and helped make this such a great success.

We Just Have To Ask
We know that the membership blitz is a tried and true way for councils to get more men to join.
During the rest of the year, we often “forget” to ask men to join and to bring their families into the Knights of Columbus family. You probably know an eligible Catholic man you could ask today. What if the only reason he hasn’t joined is because no one has asked him yet?
When telling a prospect about the strengths of the Order, don’t forget our greatest fraternal benefit: our insurance program. This is often a “selling point” to a potential member who is on the fence. Many members become Knights simply to be able to buy coverage to protect their family. Soon after, they realize the good our charitable works do for their community and become proud and active members.
