EDUCATION
In the Philippines, there were many persons with disabilities who haven’t finished their
schooling or haven’t been in school especially those who were born with
disabilities.
Education is important to us. However, persons with disabilities are not given importance. Schools are not ready to accept persons with disabilities. Most
schools are not accessible. Not all schools accept persons with disabilities. And there are places who really don’t have schools within the community.
Transportation accessibility
This area has been neglected because it is believed that this is very expensive for developing country such as the Philippines.
Attitude• Belief that persons with disabilities are burden of the
family and society
• Belief that persons with disabilities cannot compete with others
Because society places little expectation to persons with disabilities. This leads to the view
that the life of persons with disabilities is less valuable.
Basic needs of persons with disabilities
• Assistive devices
• Affordable services
• Housing programs designed for them
• Food, water and clothing even though common to all human beings, are being accessed by persons with disabilities in different ways.
Support to be able to participate fully in the
community
•Personal assistance:
•Support to decision making:
•Sign language interpreters:
The government do not realize the extent of marginalization that persons
with disabilities faces
• These non-realization is clearly translated to:
• Non-inclusion in the national action plan
• No budgetary support to implement laws that support persons with disabilities
• Persons with disabilities are not part of decision making processes that affects them
Persons with disabilities are part of human diversity, therefore
• the society should accept persons with disabilities
• the society's structure and design should be disability-inclusive
• Opportunity should also be diverse
Acceptance of persons with disabilities means
• accessibility is not seen as expensive: accessibility is not viewed as needs of persons with disabilities only:
• persons with disabilities are seen as competent as everyone else:
• persons with disabilities have different interests, ability, capacity and aspirations:
Thank you very much!
