Readings
Isiah 7:10-14 Romans 1:1-7
Matthew 1:18-24
Gospel This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary, your wife, into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and
bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.
1. In the gospel we hear the phrase, “Do not be afraid.” Where is fear affecting you, your family, your community, or society at large? How do you overcome fear? How does a community or society overcome fear?
2. Matthew explains the term “Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us.” When in your life have you vividly experienced God’s presence? After reflecting on these times, open the Journeysong book to song 299, “Emmanuel.” Read the words as the melody is felt in your heart. Do you now have a better understanding of the Coming of Christ?
3. Where are you struggling to recognize God’s presence? What steps can you take to more fully trust that God is leading you?
4. How do you see the character and actions of Joseph? Do you see him in you, in your heart? What actions in the past did you do that emulated Joseph? What have you done that did not emulate him?
The fourth candle represents
It is called the "Angel’s Candle." The angels announced that Jesus came to bring peace--He came to bring people close to God and to each other again.

Join us to pray that all unborn children have the lifetime that they deserve and for the protection of all life at any age from conception to natural death.
On December 11, hundreds of parishioners attended a funeral Mass for their beloved friend and fellow parishioner, Bill Scherr. He was active at Saint Mark’s as an Extraordinary Minister, was a member of the Finance Council, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Knights of Columbus, and was an Oblate of Saint Leo's Abbey in St. Leo, FL. Bill will certainly be missed, but never forgotten, by all who knew him. Please continue to pray for his wife Jean, and their family.

Read about the following openings.
Ministry of Consolation Consolation Ministry members meet with the family of

Assistance is offered regarding the selection of Liturgy,
readings and music for the Funeral Mass or Memorial Mass,
and with their own participation in the service of their loved
ones if desired.

with a ride to church or to medical
appointments. They are in need of
new volunteers as soon as possible.

Communion Service The Communion Service ministry provides teams to conduct Communion services at local assisted-living communities on a rotating basis. Currently, four facilities are serviced each weekend. Since residents are unable to attend Mass, this means that without your help they are unable to receive the Holy Eucharist. If you think you might want to assist St. Mark in this very important Ministry, your help is greatly needed. Instruction and support are provided to you in preparation for this most- fulfilling ministry.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
There are no words in the English language that can adequately thank you for all you have done for me and my
family during Deacon Bob's illness, wake and funeral. During his illness we received many
“thinking of you,” “get well,” and Mass cards. Some of you did come to visit him at the Memory Care Center. He always had a smile for everyone, and it was greatly appreciated. Since his passing we have received hundreds of sympathy cards as well as Mass Cards, food and flowers. How do you say thank you? We are trying to thank everyone personally with a little note but that is taking some time, so for right now, “Thank you to all of you for all you have done for us.” A very special thank you to the deacons and priests who handled his spiritual needs. I pray for each of you daily for all you have done to make this difficult journey as comfortable for him spiritually as well as for us who are left behind. The office staff planned and executed his wake and funeral Mass which was as wonderful as it could be. Your hours of planning are appreciated by the entire family.
God Bless You All, Ann, Bernadette, Joseph and Jude-Ann Esposito
Peace Hope Love As we eagerly anticipate the
coming of the Christ Child, love and generosity are very real at St. Mark the Evangelist. Your generous gifts – given from your hearts – are nothing short of compassion in action!
Your contributions enabled the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to provide Thanksgiving meals and beautiful Christmas gifts that children will open on Christmas morning, as well as providing other assistance to those in need throughout the year.
We are so very blessed with your works of Mercy, and be assured you will be remembered in our prayers at Christmas time and into the New Year. We recall Matthew’s Gospel when Jesus told his disciples, “…..whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”
A BLESSED CHRISTMAS TO
YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES!
The next collection takes
place this weekend.
