Dear NES Families , It was a joy and pleasure visiting our first grade c lassroom this week , taught by our very talented, creative and effective t eacher , Casey Hamilton. Our first grade community witnessed the miracle of li f e and change as they watched their classroom caterpillar grow and turn into a chrysalis . The skin of the chrysalis spl it and a beautiful butterfly cl imbed out, under the watchful eyes of our extremely excited f irst graders. With Apprec iat ion, Kate Segal

NES Arts Model Competencies Crystal Buswell, Art Teacher

Newfields Art model competencies are

aligned with the New Hampshire Department of Education Arts Graduation Competencies for Performance Assessments. NES students will demonstrate learning in four art competencies.

The four art competencies are creating, presenting, responding, and connecting. Students create when they apply the skills and language of art, creating, refining and completing artistic ideas. Students present art when they convey meaning and demonstrate artistic concepts and ideas. Students respond to art when they evaluate how art works convey meaning. Lastly, students connect to artistic ideas and artistic work when applying skills and language to explain personal connections and meaning.

Performance indicators explain what students will be able to understand or do after a lesson. One example of a k-2 indicator is that students will understand and apply elements of Art: line, color, shape, space, form, value and texture. An example of a 3-5 indicator is that students will understand and apply the principles of Art: balance, composition, pattern, contrast, emphasis, movement, rhythm, and unity. For complete k-5 Visual Arts competency please go to our SAU 16 website at www.sau16.org.
