What’s in a Name? Dardanelle Mascot History
In the later years following the Great Depression, high school
football provided a plausible escape from the stark reality. Regula-
tions were questionable at best, however Dardanelle fielded a
team, and played their home games on an off campus field located
at the south edge of town. It is not known if the team had a mas-
cot. The field was sandy, favorable for the growth of sticker burs, and the ideal
home to the six-lined Race Runner. When leaving the field after the game, and
having a painful encounter with the grass burs, a visiting player (excluding the ex-
pletives) exclaimed, :nothing should play on this field but those little sand lizards.”
Overheard by a local fan, “sand lizard”, that has a nice ring, a mascot was born.
Today teams may exert a lot of time and energy to find the “right” mascot, or it
might be as simple as crossing a field on a warm autumn afternoon. The grass burs
have been replaced with soy beans, and pesticides have all but snuffed out the
Six-Lined Race Runner, but the Sand Lizards live on to fight another day!

Contemplate
By Destiny DeFaith Conrad
Bore into me the vision you see
And flee
From the light of day
To come with me at night.
Breathe into the weeping winds
A soft word
Of wonder
And whir from the light that
Bares you naked
To elope with night who
Covers you safe
Come away, I say, come dose
In the Dragon’s den
At dusk
And muse in the mirror’s
Mighty musk
Of darkened view…
And spew like a searing poison
Truth
To the white and wither them grey-
A hue of
Bitter balance;
The natural and accurate perception of
Life
In all its forms
Come. Come re-discover the meaning of its existence
As well as your own hand
And mind
Just Because I'm A Teenager
by Kimbraly Tidwell
Just because I'm a teenager
I'm not a drama queen
I'm not always mad
I'm not dumber than you
Just because I'm a teenager
I don't do drugs
I don't sneak out
I don't have to blend in
Just because I'm a teenager
I understand more than you think
I think more than you understand
and I actually care about more than ma-
terial things
Just because I'm a teenager-respect me
for who I am.
