Though the role of president atLyndon State College may be tem-porarily filled, but faculty and ad-ministration from thinking aboutwhat is important in future leader-ship to keep the college moving inthe right direction. “We need someone who is in-quisitive and open minded becauseof the way the two qualities feedinto decision making,” said re-cently tenured professor DavidJohnston, of the English depart-ment. Johnston believes that the fu-ture president must understandand be ready for the challengesthat face higher education, includ-ing state funding and accreditation. The future of Lyndon State hasbecome somewhat blurry for fac-ulty, students, and administrationalike, given the issues the collegefaced last year and is still dealingwith today. However, the future ofcurrent and prospective studentsat LSC is still what drives the fac-ulty and administration. “I would hope that this person(the future president) will be ab-solutely passionate about Lyndonstudents,” said Dean of Academicand Student Affairs, Donna Dal-ton.Dalton hopes that what brings po-tential candidates to the collegewon’t just be the title of president,

but the passion to work with stu-dents of varying backgrounds andinterests. “This is a place worthy of all ofus doing our very best,” she said. English professor Richard Moyecame to Lyndon State after teach-ing at Columbia as both a graduatestudent and assistant professor.

Moye believes that new lead-ership needs to reflect the same vi-sion.“The institution needs to see thesame value, and it hasn’t for sometime. Carol (Moore) did not seethat as the role of this college. Ineed a president who will see thatvalue and treasure it,” Moye said.

Lyndon’s message is simple: pre-pare every student for personal andprofessional success. “We have to prepare our stu-dents for jobs we haven’t evenimagined yet,” Moye said. “Whatwe need, as any institution does, isa president who can both under-stand the scope and nature of ourmission; who understands the na-ture and purpose of education, andwho can articulate that purposeand nature to a stingy public and astingy legislature for funding.” Elizabeth Norris, professor inthe Music and Performing Arts de-partment, has watched the musicbusiness program grow in the past

five years, from eight students dur-ing its first semester to over one-hundred now. Norris would like tosee a president who understandsthe impact the arts has on an aca-demic community, noting that shebelieves Steve Gold is one who seesthat value. “We are always looking at thebottom line being the number ofstudents, how many, what’s the re-tention, but I think unless webegin to understand and embracethe impact the arts has on LyndonState, or we will only ever be a sec-ond rate college,” said Norris. Shealso believes that the future presi-dent needs to see the value of time

of people’s time, and not just thefaculty, but all across the college.

“I will be looking for someonewho will be willing to take the timeto understand what Lyndon is; whowill be appreciative of the richnessthat is here,” Dalton said.

“We are a unique institution. In some respects, the search for anew president is like a marriage,where you need to go into this notwith the assumption that you’regoing to change the other person,but that you’re going to accept thatother person for what they are andhope, by virtue of your presence,that the two of you together canmake each one even better.”

Incoming freshmen seem toprefer kayaking to calculus. Out of the incoming 542 in-coming students this year, themountain recreation manage-ment department has the highestnumber of students claiming 55of them while only 9 have joinedthe mathematic and informationsciences department. “We always want more stu-dents,” said James Bozeman, themath department head, “butwhat we do have is actually ahigher percentage of studentsthan the national average.” The national average of mathmajors within colleges with thatdegree is 1%. The nine incoming

students that are math majorsmake up 1.66% of the class. Lastyear the incoming math majorsmade up 1.51%, so as Bozemansaid the major at LSC “is smallbut not unusually small.” Bozeman says that the stu-dents can also have more personalrelationships with the professorsbecause of the small departmentsize. “Almost all of our majors cantutor in the math resource room,so there are a lot of benefits inthat sense as well,” said Bozeman. Another thing that does notfactor in this number is atmos-pheric science majors who dou-ble major with math, but are notcounted with the math majorsbecause it is not there first major.

Bozeman says if they werecounted as well, the studentscounted as math majors wouldprobably double.The incoming mountain recre-ation management majors makeup 10% of the class, while it onlymade up 7.5% of the incomingclass last fall. “It stands out,” said mountainrecreation management profes-sor Thomas Anderson. “The typeof students attracted to our pro-gram like hands-on experientiallearning.”There are skill courses such asrock and ice climbing, moun-taineering, and learning to skiand ride, as well as standardclasses with book learning. The program also qualifies for

the NEBHE (New EnglandBoard of Higher Education) pro-gram so some nearby out of statestudents can do this major whilepaying tuition that is lower thannormal out of state tuition. While the department doesnot do any specific marketing be-sides what admissions does, theydo have a FaceBook page andhave got many new students byword of mouth. “We have students who likeour program and tell peopleabout it,” said Anderson.Though, he thinks that it is theextra push that admissions gavethis year for the school as awhole that brought their num-bers from 35 new students lastyear to 55 this year.

As a whole, the school has 80more incoming students this fall,than it did last fall.The departments followingmountain recreation manage-ment with the highest numbersof incoming freshmen are atmos-pheric sciences with 51, ExerciseScience with 50, and BusinessAdministration with 46. Business Administration wasthe most popular major last yearaccounting for almost 10% of thenew students, while it only nowaccounts for 8.5%. Following math with low num-bers this year are liberal studieswith 10 students, and natural sci-ences and English, philosophy,and film studies tied with 22 newstudents each.
