ABSTRACT: Saraswata Churna is a unique combination of Ayurvedic herbal drugs, containing
mainly those drugs which are having Medhya properties like Vacha, Shankhpushpi,
Ahswagandha, Bramhi etc. For the first time Saraswata churna is described in
Bhavaprakash Unmadadhikar and formula given in the same. Due to its Medhya
properties it is selected for present study. The drug is prepared in the Ayurvedic
Pharmacy of Govt. Ayurved College, Raipur, Chatisgadha. This drug has neurotropic
enhancing property (dhi, dhriti, smriti vardhaka) and works as Medhya rasayana.
This churna (powder) acts in various mental disorders like Unmada (hysteria),
Apasmara (epilepsy), Ardita (facial palsy), Pakshaghata (Paralysis), Anxiety,
Nidranasha (Insomnia) etc.
Key Words: Ayurved, Saraswata Churna, Medhya Rasayana, Manovikara
INTRODUCTION
Ayurveda the science of sukhayu and hitayu and
long life is known for its time tested guidelines for
protecting healthy individual and for preventing
healthy individual from onset of diseases and also
remedy for the diseases. [1] Ayurveda has two aims
i.e. prevention and promotion of health and
secondly cure from the disease.[2] Medha means
intellect and Rasayana means therapeutic
procedure or preparation that on regular practice
will boost nourishment, health, memory, intellect,
immunity and hence longevity. Medhya Rasayanas
are group of medicinal plants described in Ayur-
veda with multi-fold benefits, specifically to
improve memory and intellect by Prabhava
(specific action).[3] Health is the level of
psychological well being and ability to develop
emotionally, psychologically, socially and
spiritually. Like other Ayurvedic drugs of many
potentially effective drugs that acts at various level
in a holistic way to improve the mental ability,
cognition and acts as a good antidepressant. Here
Saraswata Churna is selected for pharmaceutical,
analytical study and effects of the same as Medhya
Rasayana and Manovikara will be discussed.
OBJECTIVE
To prepare and standardize Saraswata Churna
prepared by potentization method

with high quantity of Vacha.[4] In present study
Saraswata churna is prepared in Dept. of
Rasashastra and Bhaishajya kalpana Govt.
Ayurvedic College, Raipur. Chhattisgarh

Pharmaceutical process to prepare potentized
Saraswata Churna
• 200 g. of prepared Saraswata Churna was
taken in mortar and pestle.
• 25g. of coarse powder of Saraswata churna
was taken and cold infusion method was
prepared in 150ml of water keeping for 12
hours.
• Above Saraswata churna was given bhavana
of prepared cold infusion of this powder.
• By this same procedure 12 bhavanas were
given.
• Dried and preserved in an Air tight container.
Reasoning of Potentization method
• Potency of Churna was increased.
• Efficacy of Churna was increased.
• Produces synergetic effect in drug.
• Particle size of Churna was decreased.
• Absorption rate and Bioavailability was
increased.
• Dose of churna was decreased.

• pH of sample 1 was strong acidic it will produce
pitta saraka, pitta prakopak, rakta prakopak,
and daha after giving for longer time but it
activates nerve cells. Sample 2 was weak acidic
almost neutral will be Madhur vipaki and will
give nutrition to brain cell and can be given for
longer time.
• Water soluble extractive of sample 1 was more,
so anupana like jala and yusha may be used for
better absorption. Sample 2 was less, must be
taken in lipid media that was milk, ghrita, for
fast absorption.
• Acid insoluble ash of sample 1 was more, that
activates nerve cells can be used in paralysis
extra. In sample 2 was less, gives nutrition to
nerve cells can be used as brain tonic and in
degenerative changes.
DISCUSSION
• Most of the drugs are katu, tikta rasatmaka,
usna virya and katu vipaki. Action of katu rasa
is shoshan and tikta rasa acts as kapha and
amanashaka hence shrotoshodhan kriya is
done. Ushna virya dravyas stimulates and acts
as vasodilators and promotes blood
circulation to brain and whole body. Katu
vipaki acts as kapha and mala nasaka,
tamogunanashaka, and satva guna vardhaka
(buddhi vardhaka) and stimulates nerve
receptors. Some are madhur vipaki and give
nutrition to brain (medhya).
• Medhya rasayana drugs - Vacha,
Shankhapushpi, Ashwagandha and Brahmi.
• Vacha: Medhya Rasayana, enhance Grahana
and Smarana shakti (grasping power and
memory), used in Epilepsy and
Psychoneurosis.
• Shankhapushpi: Medhya, Brain tonic,
Tranquilizer, nervine disorder, mental
aberration, anxiety, enhance neuropeptide
synthesis of brain.
• Ashwagandha: Reduce stress and anxiety,
promotes neuro regeneration. It is sedative,
extract of root exhibit hypotensive,
bradycardiac, depressant action and able to
reconstruct neuronal networks.
• Brahmi: Medhya, promotes Dharana karma
(Retention and Cognition), anxiolytic and
retart brain aeging, sedative, nervine tonic,
antianxiety, used in Psychic disorders.
• Rasayana that acts on agni – Marich, Pippali,
Ajmoda, Shewetajiraka, Krishnajiraka and
Sunthi
• Drugs that spread active principles i.e.
Saindhava lavana along with Raktashodhaka
dravya like Kuth and Patha.
By this pharmaceutical process potency of drug is
increased to give better results than prepared by
text method. Analytically pH, Acid Insoluble Ash
and Water Soluble Extractive is done to correlate
sample 1 and 2.
Saraswata churna with Goghrita and Honey
specially works in 4 different levels i.e. level of
Agni, level of Doshas, level of Manas (mind) and
level of Manovaha strotasa which are finally able to
degrade the samprapti of diseases and resemble
effect as Medhya rasayana.
CONCLUSION
Saraswata churna is established Ayurvedic
formulation which is potentized by giving bhavana
of Saraswata hima. By this process Potency,
Efficacy, Bioavailability is increased & dose is
decreased. This drug has neurotropic enhancing
property (dhi, dhriti, smriti vardhaka) and works as
Medhya rasayana. This churna acts in various
mental disorders like Unmada (hysteria),
Apasmara (epilepsy), Ardita (facial palsy),
Pakshaghata (Paralysis), Anxiety, Nidranasha
(Insomnia) etc. Scientific & experimental studies
conducted in recent years with this class of drugs
have given evidence of neuro nutrient effect,
neural metabolic effect & improve blood perfusion
to the brain and mostly responsible for clinical
effects.
