COURSE UPDATE

Dear Samantha

Observing a skill performedexceptionally well always gives theimpression of being simple In golf nosaying is more accurate I wasreminded of this fact recently bywatching Mike Goodes practice puttin the evenings at Provo Golf ClubMike went about his way in aneffortless manor and as he continuedto practice it occurred to me that hishead did not move an ounce during orafter his putting stroke It was aneffortless conservation of movement

On another occasion I was able to take in Mikes swing off the 6thtee I was amazed to be reminded that he had a much shorterbackswing and considerably longer follow through than most Hemade a seamless slow motion swing that sent the golf ball 260yards directly down the fairway cutting through the strongtropical head wind Could it really be that simple If so thisrevelation makes me want to play golf more often instead of lessoften with less movement instead of more movement Perhaps Ishould think of a simpler way to sum up my new revelation ofgolf conservation if I am going to put this into practice

I am sure that most of you have noticedthat the driving rangepractice net hasbeen out of commission since the stormsin late August Well I am happy to passon that we have received approval toconstruct a new short range adjacent tothe clubhouse Our plan is to install a50wide 40 deep 35 high practicecage (see example below) next to thechipping green This will allow for 6 to 8people to utilize it at one time Also wewill install an 8 50 artificial tee line thatboth accepts tees and provides a morerealistic and forgiving feel to iron shotsthan our existing artificial mats Anotherkey component of this short range is thatthe net will be on a pulley system whichwill allow it to be lowered easily to helpprevent damage from storms and highwinds

We are in the process of ordering thematerials now and we plan to begin theconstruction as soon as items arrive Realistically it probably will not be readyuntil sometime in January We areconfident that this will be a great additionfor the club and feel that the location willbe much more accessible and convenient

Mike Goodes is an extremely rare individual who as a 49 year oldamateur golfer announced that he would turn professional andattempt to qualify for the PGA Champions Tour A feat many haveuttered over one too many whiskies at their local golf club but noone had ever successfully accomplished The difference is thatMike is now 58 years old and has played on the Champions Tourfor 8 years while winning close to 43 million dollars and aChampions Tour Event while missing only 4 cuts out of 173tournaments along the way Amazing simply amazing Now Iwonder if this simplicity thingamajig has served him well over thelast decade or perhaps Mike should consider changing his swingMore likely and better yet I should consider changing my golfswing and best describe it as less motion more often as thatsaying is short and simple Would someone please tell me whichway to the first tee or perhaps the practice putting green while Ihum the words short back swing steady head

Simple is as good in golf as it is in life In fact many say they wantto simplify their lives as a New Years resolution Therefore Iwould like to wish everyone a Simple Christmas and anUncomplicated New Year (as well as a short backswing andsteady head while putting) Thank you allAll the bestDave Douglas Director of Golf
