We plan to set app. 250' of 8 5/8" surface casing, and to drill a 7 7/8" hole to test the Stony Mountain member of the Red River-Ordivician formation, at an estimated depth of 5,100 to 5,200 feet. Blowout prevention equipment consists of a 10" Shafer power actuated unit for closing, and all necessary rams. We plan to core, log and test the above formation, as needed.

Re: Bueno #1 Holloway—State NWNW-4-12N-22E Dewey County, South Dakota Permit No. 403
Dear Tip:
On December 5, I wrote Duncan that I felt the bond on this location was ready for termination. We apparently had not received samples from surface to 2720, although the operator reports that American Stratigraphic sent them to us.
We should either recommend release of the bond or else inform the operator the samples have not been sent in and are required. The core barn should be carefully checked, of course, to make certain the samples are not in our possession.
Let me know if you want me to follow up on the samples.
Sincerely,
e /2

Re: Bueno #1 Holloway-State NWNW-4-12N-22E Dewey County, South Dakota Permit No. 403
Dear Duncan:
As shown by the enclosed Scout Report, the pits at the above location have been filled and the location smoothed. My records show all required logs, records, and forms have been received.
There is a question on samples. When I was in Vermillion June 9, Bob Schoon checked the core barn and found samples from 2720 - TD from this test. I wrote Bueno about this and they wrote that American Stratigraphic informed them that a full set had been sent us. It looks like our set of samples start at the Dakota formation so very little of importance is missing, in the samples we have.
I recommend we accept the sample situation, as is, and release the bond. The alternative is to check our samples care-fully and if we do not have the samples from surface to 2720, to contact Bueno and request these additional samples.
Let me know if you want me to follow up on these samples.
Sincerely,

Re: Bueno #1 Holloway-State NWNW-4-12N-22E Dewey County, South Dakota Permit No. 403
Dear Mr. Lewis:
Yesterday I was at the above location and it seems that the only thing that needs to be done to satisfy our requirements is to fill the pits and smooth the location. A signed RELEASE from the land owner would be accepted in lieu of the dirt work. It is hoped the RELEASE can be obtained, or the dirt work completed before it freezes.
I have not been to Vermillion since June 9, so have been unable to re-check the samples on file.

fear Mr. Lewis:
Your March 3 letter has been received in which you asked what is necessary to get the plug=j ing affacavit on the above Lest approved by the Board. Several things remain to he done.
My November 24, 19(5, letter outlined why the abandonment marker was not satisfactory. At the tine I checked the marker, it was definitely loose and not properly cemented. The dirt that had been put around the base of the marker has probably frozen now
• and it is understandable why the marker would have been solid when you checked it February 28.
The marker will have to he recemented and then inspected. inspection will have to welt until the frost leaves the ground, otherwise, it would be impossible to tell whether the marker was solid as the result of ice or cement. It would seem that under the circumstances, the recementing should not he done until the frost is out of the ground.
The pits must he filled and leveled or a FELE obtained from the surface owner, before the bond can be released.
It is assumed that the samples and the various reports required, as listed in my November 9 letter, have been sent to the Vermillion office. If not, they will have to be sent in before the hone can he released.

Dear Mr. Spears:
This is in regard to your letter of November 18, 1965, concerning results of an oil test drilled near Lantry, South Dakota.
The Bueno #1 Hallows ate, Permit No. 403, was drilled in Dewey County in the NW+, sec. , T. 12 N., R. 22 E., to a total depth of 5056 feet and was plugged November 8, 1965. The test was cored from 4981-5056 feet and a drill stem test was made of the interval from 5016- 5056 feet. The recovery of this test amounted to 98 feet of oil (26 degrees API gravity), 720 feet of water-cut oil, 90 feet of slightly oil-cut mud, and 929 feet of fresh water.

I am interested in obtaining information on an oil well drilled near Lantry, South Dakota in the past month. I believe that it was plugged on or about November 8, 1965.
I further believe that it was drilled by Brueno Drilling Company for their own account.

Dear Mr. Holloway:
I have been advised that the • . has obtained a Permit to Drill for Oil an. Gas on your _Land in ecu on T 1..A1 / R 22E •
Occasionally, owners of land consider converting abandoned oil wells into water wells. Please advise me whether or not you intend to convert the oil well drill hole on your land Triter w-e-TITrw-a=s eriFaincereir--01 1EHe g.i1I-051e-fg-abandO177-as an oil well.
If you are considering making a water well out of the abandoned oil well drill hole, special considerations are necessary to comply with the State's oil and water laws. The abandoned oil hole must be properly plugged and the water well properly constructed. All conversion work will be at your expense. The oost will vary, depending upon the characteristics of the drill hole, but such cost will be in the neighborhood of $5,000 or more. Usually another driller and drill rig will have to be arranged for. This other drill rig and casing and other materials will have to be on hand to take over immediately after the special oil well plugging is completed, because th-e—a-FiTrale cannot be left open for any appreciable length of time without spoiling it. Approval of plans for construction of the water well will be required, and a bond covering proper constructin may be re-quired. Also, a water right may be required. All of these arrangements take considerable time to accomplish.
Please advise me immediately if you plan to convert the oil well drill hole into a water well. We both hope that a producing oil well results from the drill hole on your land; however, if not and you are planning on a water well, we must start making arrangements now.
Sincerely,
J.W. GRIMES Chief Engineer
