Cortland Concludes 2014 Season With Dramatic Cortaca Jug WinCortland turned a bad field goal snap into a winning touchdown pass on the game’s final play as the Red Dragons defeated Ithaca College, 23-20, in the annual Cortaca Jug rivalry game in front of nearly 9,000 fans at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.

The crazy finish saw a potential game-tying field goal turn into a broken play and possible loss before holder Luke Hinton rolled left and threw the winning pass to Jon Mannix. The play was ranked #3 on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10 plays that evening and was featured during the next week by numerous national media outlets.

Cortland has won five straight games versus Ithaca from 2010-14, matching the Red Dragons’ longest win streak versus the Bombers originally accomplished from 1955-59.

The Red Dragons won five of their final six games after opening the season with four losses that included an overtime setback at Buffalo State and a three-point home loss to Brockport.

Dylan Peebles earned D3football.com First Team All-America honors as a kick returner. He led Division III nationally with 34.9 yards per kickoff return and three touchdowns, including a 91-yard return versus Ithaca that tied the score in the fourth quarter. Offensive guard Vin Juliano joined Peebles on the All-East first team, while Peebles, defensive end Jake Ceresna and safety Andrew Tolosi were All-ECAC South Region selections.

Dylan Peebles is pictured above returning a kickoff 91 yards versus Ithaca to tie the game in the fourth quarter of the 2014 Cortaca Jug game. Cortland Football Joins Empire 8 Conference in 2015SUNY Cortland football has joined the Empire 8 starting in the fall of 2015. The Red Dragons will be affiliate football members along with The College at Brockport, Buffalo State and Morrisville State College. Full football-playing members of the conference are Ithaca College, St. John Fisher College, Alfred University, Utica College and Hartwick College.

Cortland was a football-only member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) from 2000-14. The Red Dragons finished at least tied for first in the NJAC six times (2005-08, 2010, 2012). They were outright league champions in 2008 and 2012, and they won a tiebreaker to earn the conference’s NCAA automatic bid in 2010.

“Cortland is a strong academic institution with a rich football history with many of the Empire 8 institutions,” said Empire 8 Commissioner Chuck Mitrano. “They are a perfect fit and

further enhance the competitive level of what is already the toughest conference in Division III.”

“It’s an exciting time for Cortland Football as we embrace change,” said Cortland football head coach Dan MacNeill. Thanks to the Empire 8 for accepting us into their prestigious conference, where we look to build stronger relationships with familiar competitors and establish new regional rivalries.”

“We look forward to meeting new challenges in the Empire 8 and to

creating new relationships with some of these institutions that are so close to us geographically but that we haven’t had the opportunity to compete against on a regular basis in years past,” said Cortland Director of Athletics Mike Urtz. “We hope we can bring added value to an already great and highly competitive conference.”

Coaching StaffDan MacNeill, Head Coach

Dan MacNeill begins his 19th season as SUNY Cortland’s head football coach in 2015. His teams are a combined 119-66 and have made 12 postseason appearances, including five NCAA tournament showings. He ranks first at Cortland in both career victories and career winning percentage (.643).

MacNeill’s Cortland squads played as an independent from 1997-99 and were a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) from 2000-14 before joining the Empire 8 in 2015. MacNeill was named NJAC Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2012, and he was a finalist for 2008 Liberty Mutual National Coach of the Year honors after Cortland finished 11-2 and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals before losing at eventual national champion Mount Union. The Red Dragons were recognized as the top Division III teams in the East by winning both the Lambert Trophy and the ECAC Team of the Year awards, and the 11 victories and national quarterfinal appearance matched school records.

Under MacNeill, Cortland won outright NJAC titles in 2008 and 2012 and tied for first in the conference in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010. His squads tied for ninth nationally after advancing to the second round of the NCAA playoffs in 2010 and 2012, as well as a tie for ninth in 1997 in a 16-team field and a tie for 17th in 2005.

MacNeill’s teams have won eight or more games eight times, including 10 victories in 2010 and nine in 2002, 2006, 2011 and 2012 in addition to the 11-win 2008 campaign.

In addition to the five NCAA appearances, MacNeill’s teams won ECAC bowls in 2002, 2007 and 2012 and played in four other ECAC postseason games. Among MacNeill’s other highlights at Cortland are a 32-31 win over nationally second-ranked and eventual national semifinalist Rowan University in the 2001 season and an 11-7 record against rival Ithaca College in the annual “Cortaca Jug” game, including five straight wins from 2010-14.

MacNeill has coached 26 All-Americans, 81 All-East and 70 All-ECAC players at Cortland. Those players included two Gagliardi Trophy national Player of the Year finalists – defensive tackle Adam Haas in 2006 and quarterback Dan Pitcher in 2011 – along with 1997 ECAC Upstate New York Player of the Year Omar Darling, 2007 ECAC Southeast Rookie of the Year Brian Haas, and 2013 ECAC South Defensive Rookie of the Year Tristan Laurore.

In addition, MacNeill’s players earned 204 All-NJAC honors, highlighted by the selection of Adam Haas as the 2005 NJAC Defensive Player of the Year, Bryan Wiley as the 2009 NJAC Defensive Player of the Year, Justin Autera as the 2010 NJAC Co-

Offensive Player of the Year and Dan Pitcher as the 2011 NJAC Offensive Player of the Year.

An assistant coach at Division I-AA Villanova University from 1984-96, MacNeill is Cortland’s 11th head coach since the school’s modern era of football began in 1924. MacNeill served as linebackers coach at Villanova and was the team’s defensive coordinator from 1988-96.

One of the nation’s top defensive coaches, MacNeill’s charges consistently ranked among the best defensive teams in the Yankee Conference. His 1991 squad finished the year first nationally in scoring defense, second in total defense and fifth in rushing defense while leading the Yankee Conference in every defensive category. The Wildcats placed first nationally in rushing defense in 1992. In 1996, Villanova finished 8-4 and earned a berth in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

While at Villanova, MacNeill coached three AFCA/Kodak First Team All-Americans, one Associated Press All-American, six first team All-Yankee Conference performers, six first team All-ECAC selections and one player who went on to the NFL. He received a master’s degree in educational administration from Villanova in 1994.

A 1979 Cortland graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, MacNeill was a four-year Red Dragon letterwinner and three-year starter at linebacker and defensive tackle. He served as a team tri-captain during his senior campaign in 1978. In his last varsity game against Southern Connecticut State, he was credited with 11 unassisted tackles and three quarterback sacks.

MacNeill began his football coaching career as an assistant at Port Byron (N.Y.) Central High School from 1980 to 1982, prior to being named as a graduate assistant coach at Ithaca College. He coached Ithaca’s junior varsity team in 1982 and was in charge of the Bombers’ receivers in 1983.

About SUNY CortlandLocated atop one of the rolling hills in central New York’s “City of Seven Valleys,” the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School, which included among its earliest students inventor and industrialist Elmer A. Sperry of Sperry-Rand Corp. fame.

Over the decades, the campus expanded and in 1941, by an act of legislature and the Board of Regents, the institution officially became a four-year college providing courses leading to the bachelor’s degree. In 1948, Cortland was a founding member of the State University of New York. Today, more than 7,000 students are pursuing degrees within the College’s three academic divisions — arts and sciences, professional studies and the school of education. Twenty-eight departments with a faculty of more than 500 offer the SUNY Cortland student body 75 undergraduate majors and 92 undergraduate minors, concentrations and options from which to choose. The College’s main campus covers 191 acres and includes 33 traditional and modern buildings. Sixteen of these structures are residence halls providing on-campus housing for approximately 3,000 students. Cortland also operates its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie Gorge Nature Preserve outside Cortland, and the Brauer Education Center on the Helderberg Escarpment near Albany. At Cortland, athletics are viewed as having an important role in the educational mission of the College. During the fall, winter and spring seasons, Cortland participates in 25 intercollegiate sports — 14 women’s and 11 men’s — in an attempt to provide a broad program which meets the needs, interests and abilities of its students.

The Cortland athletic program placed 12th nationally out of approximately 450 colleges and universities in the 2014-15 all-sport Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Division III standings. Cortland is the only New York

school and one of only five nationwide to finish in the top 25 each of the last 20 years. Since 1989, the Red Dragons have captured 17 NCAA Division III team titles.

The College offers its student-athletes excellent athletic facilities. The state-of-the-art on -campus stadium features two artificial turf fields. One field seats 6,500 spectators, the other 1,500. The Cortland football, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field teams are among those who utilize the facility, which the New York Times called “...a new stadium worthy of a major university power.”

The Bessie L. Park Physical Education and Recreation Center, opened in 1973, features the Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium with a 3,500 seating capacity; the Olympic-sized Harriet Holsten swimming pool with gallery seating for 1,500; the Alumni Ice Arena, a facility which can accommodate 2,500 spectators; a 500-seat gymnastics arena; racquetball and squash courts; a wrestling room; modern athletic training facilities; and the Francis Woods Fitness Facility.

Nearby Clayton R. Lusk Field House, with its tartan-textured surface, is home for the indoor track teams, varsity practice sessions and recreational activities. Cortland’s soccer teams play on the Jets Field with its plush, natural-grass surface. T. Fred “Prof” Holloway Field, which has lights for night contests, also is utilized by the soccer teams. Additionally, the College boasts Robert H. Wallace Field (baseball) and Dragon Field (softball) as part of its 51 acres of athletic fields and built a new outdoor tennis complex that opened in September 2015.
