CORPUS CHRISTI CATHOLIC SECONDARY -- SCHOOL MUSICAL -- TARZAN
TARZAN January 17, 2020
This year, Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School is proud to announce that it will be staging a major
theatrical production. We will be putting on the Broadway musical TARZAN. The performance dates are:
April 29, 30, May 1st, 2020 (Matinees)
April 29, 30, May 1st and May 2nd, 2020 (Evening Performances)
We would like to give students from the Corpus Christi feeder schools an opportunity to become involved.
We are positive that our elementary schools are filled with many talented students and we would love to have
them be a part of our production. We are looking for:
a) a chorus of 15 excellent SINGERS (grades 4-8)
-These singers will be playing the roles of young apes.
-They will need to learn how to move like apes. They must stay focused and remain in
character at all times. We are looking for responsible children who are dedicated. They
must be punctual, attend all rehearsals, and demonstrate a consistently positive attitude.
b) a group of 10 talented DANCERS and/or GYMNASTS (grades 6-8)
-We are looking for children who have experience performing/competing on stage and
have had formal dance/ gymnastics training.
-We are looking for dancers who have experience (mostly with) modern, contemporary,
hip-hop, jazz, acro, and lyrical dance.
-We are looking for gymnasts who are particularly flexible and good at floor routines,
tumbling, cartwheels, round offs, rolls, handstands, front walkovers, back walkovers,
aerials, etc...
-All students must have personality and stage presence.
c) two (2) male students to play the part of YOUNG TARZAN
It does not matter what grade the students are in as long as they look like they are between
9-11 years of age, are excellent singers and actors who have plenty of energy, personality,
stage presence, and charisma.
Young Tarzan needs to be able to sing and act and remember many choreographed
movements.
AUDITIONS will be held on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1st, 2020 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
Auditions will be held at Corpus Christi in the THEATRE.
CORPUS CHRISTI CATHOLIC SECONDARY -- SCHOOL MUSICAL -- TARZAN
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Please visit our school’s website: www.cccss.ca. There will be a link related to the TARZAN FEEDER SCHOOL
AUDITION PROCESS. Parents/guardians will be provided with information and forms which will need to be completed prior to the audition. Students will be provided with information regarding requirements as well as resources to help them prepare for the auditions. Parents/guardians must sign up their child for an AUDITION TIME.
On the day of the auditions, parents/guardians will bring their child to Corpus Christi at least 20 minutes before their audition time. Students will wait to be called and then audition in front of the Casting Directors. Parents/guardians may then take their child home once their audition is done. The Casting Directors will need to deliberate once they have seen all of the auditions. We will let parents/guardians know via e-mail if their child has been selected to be a part of the cast.
Students do not have to have their songs/lines memorized, but it does indicate to the Casting Directors whether or not they are eager and serious about being in the play.
We are looking for enthusiasm, personality, focus, stage presence, and energy as well as ability/talent.
Re: audio -- students do not need to bring any music with them. We are equipped with everything that is needed.
You may sing a capella (by yourself with no music) OR you can have accompaniment (CD / youtube karaoke version, etc…). ===============================================================================================================================
Once the Corpus Christi Directors have made their final decisions regarding casting, students should be aware that rehearsals will take place at Corpus Christi. You may not be needed every day. It is a big commitment, however, and we are looking for students who do not have many after-school commitments/activities which could interfere with rehearsals. Students will also be expected to rehearse on their own at home.
Students must always be diligent when it comes to their academic studies. School work/ homework should always be a priority. We do not want you to fall behind in your studies. Organization and planning ahead of time will be crucial. There may be times (especially in the months of March/April) when rehearsals will, indeed, be every day after school and last longer into the evening.
We will issue a monthly rehearsal schedule in advance so that everyone knows when and where they have to be.
**Parents/Guardians are responsible for making their own arrangements for their child’s transportation to and from Corpus Christi in order to attend play rehearsals.
Some rehearsals will take place in the mornings before school (from 7:00 am to 8:00 am). While other rehearsals will take place in the afternoons (after school until approximately 4:30/5:00 pm). Again, see the rehearsal schedule for February (attached). A few rehearsals will take place on Saturdays and last all day.
Daily after school rehearsals will start at the beginning of March. Elementary school students will be expected to be present at these rehearsals. (Elementary school students may arrive for rehearsals at Corpus Christi AFTER their school day is done).
On the day of the audition, if any parents/guardians wish to provide transportation for a child who is not their own, said parent/guardian who is to be behind the wheel of the vehicle must complete a form entitled:
AUTHORIZATION TO TRANSPORT STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN SCHOOL EVENT(S).

“Who Better Than Me” LYRICS - FOR SINGER/CHORUS MEMBER AUDITIONS
YOUNG TERK:
YOU’RE ONE OF A KIND, I CAN’T EXPLAIN IT
YET KIND OF COOL IN A WONDERFUL WAY
AND THOUGH YOU’RE WEIRD, YOU COULD MAKE IT
AND WHO BETTER THAN ME TO TEACH YOU?
WHO BETTER THAN ME TO SET YOU ON YOUR WAY?
THIS COULD TAKE SOME HANGING IN THERE
THOUGH WITH PERSUASION I COULD TAKE YOU ON UP
MAKE YOU GROOVE UP BESIDE THE OTHERS
AND WHO BETTER THAN ME TO LEAD YOU?
WHO BETTER THAN ME TO TAKE YOU ALL THE WAY?
YOUNG TERK, YOUNG TARZAN:
STRUGGLING ALONE FOR YEARS AND YEARS
YOUNG TERK:
UNTIL I CAME ALONG FOR YOU
NOW IT’S ALL COMING TOGETHER
YOUNG TERK, YOUNG TARZAN:
AND TOGETHER WE’LL SEE THIS THROUGH
YOU FOR ME ‘N’ ME FOR YOU
YOUNG TARZAN:
I CAN LEARN, I CAN LISTEN
I KNOW THERE’S SOMETHING DEEP INSIDE
BUT I NEED ASSISTANCE TO GO THE DISTANCE
YOUNG TERK:
AND WHO BETTER THAN ME
YOUNG TARZAN:
TO TEACH ME?
YOUNG TERK:
WHO BETTER THAN ME
YOUNG TARZAN:
TO TELL ME ALL YOU KNOW?
YOUNG TERK:
WHO BETTER THAN ME?
YOUNG TARZAN:
YOU REACH ME

“I Need To Know” LYRICS - FOR SINGER/CHORUS MEMBER AUDITIONS
YOUNG TARZAN:
WILL SOMEONE TELL ME WHERE I BELONG
WHERE I SHOULD GO?
CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHERE I’M GOING WRONG?
I NEED TO KNOW
WHY WOULD I HURT THE ONES I LOVE?
WHY WOULD I HURT YOU?
IF I CAN’T BE WHAT HE WANTS OF ME
WHAT AM I TO DO?
WHEN WILL I BE ME?
THE SON THAT HE CAN’T SEE?
THERE MUST BE SOMEBODY WHO UNDERSTANDS
OUT THERE, SOMEWHERE
WHEN WILL I FIND HOME
A PLACE WHERE I BELONG?
SURELY THERE MUST BE MORE LIKE ME
OUT THERE, SOMEWHERE
THERE MUST BE SOMEBODY JUST LIKE ME
OUT THERE…

YOUNG TARZAN ACTING AUDITION - Scene # 1
Scene: “Young Tarzan and Young Terk”
Young Tarzan: Thanks
Young Terk: Don’t worry about it, kid. See, I’ve been watching you.
Young Tarzan: You have?
Young Terk: You’re getting huge. Auntie Kala won’t be able to take care of you forever.
Young Tarzan: I can take care of myself!
Young Terk: Oh, really? Face it, kid, you need protection. That’s why I’m here.
Young Tarzan: You’re gonna help me? What’s the catch?
Young Terk: For someone with no friends, you’re way too suspicious.
Young Tarzan: You’re only doing this cuz the guys don’t want to hang out with you either.
Young Terk: No! I don’t wanna hang out with those losers. Let’s get that straight. Their idea
of fun is to jump on each other and roll in their own poop.
Young Tarzan: Yeah, I never really got into that.
Young Terk: Whereas I – am a superior being. (producing a stick, he strikes an affected pose)
Ta-dah!
Young Tarzan: Big deal. You’re holding a stick.
Young Terk: Yeah, it’s a sign of my intelligence.
Young Tarzan: So what do you do with it?
Young Terk: Do with it?!? You um – (stymied, he changes the subject)
Trust me, this partnership is gonna be so good for you. You can start by scratching my back.
Young Tarzan: No way!
Young Terk: (trying to wrap his free arm around himself)
There’s this part – I can’t quite reach…
Young Tarzan: Just use your stick! (Young Tarzan guides Young Terk’s other arm up and back, demonstrating
how to use the stick as a back-scratcher)
Young Terk: Huh? How’d you do that? (enjoying the sensation)
Ooooo. Ooooo! This partnership is working out great! Now, let’s see –
CORPUS CHRISTI CATHOLIC SECONDARY -- SCHOOL MUSICAL -- TARZAN
Get me some fruit. (Young Terk points to some fruit: low-hanging, but too high for Young Tarzan
to reach. Young Tarzan makes a few feeble attempts.)
Young Tarzan: So, Terk, what am I getting out of this again?
Young Terk: Protection! Where’s my fruit? (Grabbing hold of a vine, Young Tarzan launches himself into the
tree and tries to pull himself up.)
Young Tarzan: (lets out an undeveloped version of the famous Tarzan yell)
Aaaaaaaaaarrrrgghhhhhhh!
(Not being able to muster enough strength to climb, Young Tarzan falls to the ground.)
Young Terk: Lose the yell, okay? That is so lame. (puts his arm around Young Tarzan)
See, kid? You need me more than you think.
Young Tarzan: Gimme your stick.
Young Terk: What? But…
Young Tarzan: (makes sad, puppy dog eyes) Puh-leeeze?
Young Terk: What is with those eyes? I can’t take it. Here.
Young Tarzan: (grabbing the stick from Terk) We’ll take a stone from my collection… and attach it to your “sign
of intelligence”… and now we really get… ta-da!
Young Terk: Big deal. It’s a stick and a stone.
Young Tarzan: My latest invention: the fruit-picker!
Young Terk: Man, you are so weird!
Young Tarzan: (stretches toward the fruit and grunts) Ah… ah… ah!
(finally stabs the fruit) Gotcha!
(Young Tarzan shows his prize to Young Terk.)
Young Terk: No way! It can’t be true!
Young Tarzan: (takes a bite) And it tastes deeee…licious!
Young Terk: (taking credit for the achievement with his stick)
Tarzan, I’m a genius!
Young Tarzan: (sarcastic) Yeah, right.
CORPUS CHRISTI CATHOLIC SECONDARY -- SCHOOL MUSICAL -- TARZAN
YOUNG TARZAN ACTING AUDITION – Scene # 2
Scene: “Young Tarzan and Kerchak”
Kerchak: Congratulations, Tarzan. You’re all grown up. Terk, take the young ones back to the family.
Tarzan, walk with me.
Young Tarzan: You want me? Really?
Kerchak: Yes.
Young Tarzan: (calling after Young Terk) Hey, tell mom I’m with Kerchak, will ya? He wants to walk with me!
It’s a “guy” thing!
(Kerchak and Young Tarzan start to walk.)
Kerchak: Stay close and remember what I say. The safest parts of the jungle are the darkest. In the light,
you can be seen.
Young Tarzan: All right…
Kerchak: During a rainstorm, stay away from riverbanks – move to the higher ground. Understand?
Young Tarzan: Sure, Kerchak. (Kerchak and Young Tarzan arrive at some water.)
Kerchak: This is a good watering hole… fresh all year round.
Young Tarzan: (not understanding) Okay…
Kerchak: I have to do this. To protect the family.
Young Tarzan: From what?
Kerchak: From you.
Young Tarzan: Me? You think – I’d hurt my own family? Apes don’t do that.
Kerchak: But you’re not an – I’m leaving you here.
Young Tarzan: But I can’t smell things like you can. I can’t find my way back in the dark!
Kerchak: I know. (Kerchak turns to leave.)
Young Tarzan: Kerchak, please! Whatever I did – I’m sorry!
Kerchak: It’s not anything you did, Tarzan. It’s – well, look at yourself!
Young Tarzan: (frantic) I’ll be good. Gimme one more chance! Please!!
(Young Tarzan clings to Kerchak’s leg.)
Kerchak: Let go of me. (Kerchak pushes Young Tarzan away.)
Young Tarzan: (clings again to Kerchak’s leg) I won’t get into any more fights! Just tell me what you want me
to do!
Kerchak: (a threat) Let go!
