TheMathDepartmenthasdesignedanActivelearningspaceintendedtoincreasestudentengagementandsuccessinmathematics.

LocatedinUniversityHall250,thespacehasroundtablesandportablewhite-boardsforgroupdiscussionandactivity,adoubleprojectionsystemforeasyviewingfromanyseatintheroom,andacomplimentoflaptopsforstudentuse.

ThespaceisinusestartingthisSpring2018.Manyinteractiveclassesarebeingheldinthisroom,andthedepartmentislookingforwardtomakinggreatuseofthisspaceinincreasingstudentoutcomes!

StudentSpotlight:JonathanParkerIfyou’vespentanytimeonthetop

floorofUniversityHall,thehomeoftheMathematicsDepartment,chancesare,you’vespottedJonathanParker.Jonathan,aPost-Baccalaureatemathstudent,isknownforhis“hallwayoffice,”picturedtotheleft.

ButthereisalotmoretoJonathanthanhispreferenceforcompletingschool-workinhallways!JonathangothisundergraduatedegreeatKennesawStatein2010,inChemistry.Aftergraduation,Jonathanspentaboutsixyearsworkinginindustry,inmaterialssciencelaboratories,workingwithflameretardantsandfibersforclothingandtires,theneventuallyattheCentersforDiseaseControlandPreventioninAtlanta.FamilyconnectionsinColumbusbroughthimhome,wherehegotintoperforminglabworkforaphysician.Hisinterestsinalternativehealthandnutrition,aswellasfunctionalmovementbegantoleadhimtoresearchideas.

Jonathandeterminedthatheneededadeeperunderstandingofmathematicstosupporthisresearch,whichiswhyhe’sreturnedtoschoolhereatCSU,takingprimarilystatisticscourses,alongwithLinearAlgebraandotherhigher-levelmathcourses.Eventually,hehopestoattendgraduateschoolinmathematicsandthermodynamics.Hisgoalistopursueresearchinthermodynamicsasitrelatestohealth.Heisinterestedinstudyinghowlarge-scalesystems(likebusinessesandsocieties)canbeimprovedandbecomemoreefficientwhenthehealthofindividualswithinthesystemisimproved.

AsastudenthereatColumbusStateUniversity,JonathanhasworkedcloselywithDr.CarlosAlmada,Dr.MadhuBhandary,Dr.BaiqiaoDeng,Dr.GuihongFan,andDr.EugenIonascu,withwhomhehassubmittedaproblemtotheCollegeMathematicsJournalforpublication.HeisalsoactingasaPeerLeaderinMATH3155,FoundationsforAdvancedMathematicsinSpringof2018.

Jonathanofferedthisadviceforhisfellowstudents:“Talktoindividualsontheothersideofwhatevergoalyouaretryingtoreach–toknowitisthegoalyoureallywanttoattain.”Heoffersthisguidanceassomeonewhohasalreadycompletedadegreeandspenttimeworkinginhisfield,aninvaluableperspectiveforundergraduatestoconsider.So,nexttimeyoufindyourselfintheMathematicsDepartment,lookaroundforJonathan.He’llbeinacornersomewhere,workingaway!

Judges’commentscalledtheirproject“impressive,”witha“tremendousamountofsubtletyandcomplexity”intheirproblemandsolution.
