People usually say that we can broaden our view through traveling. Reading is a special way of travel. Travel is an experience of exploring and adventuring. Words record past, and books are mediums which store those memories. Our concept was traveling. As time goes by, technology helps us get information faster, but books still play an important role in our life. Some people still like to read hardcopies rather than kindle. Our goal was to design a space for the community to enhance the mind and relax by reading. In our space, we encourage people to read, play, and communicate with each other. Through traveling and adventuring with words, our life and knowledge will be enriched.
To symbolize travel, we used railroads and hot air balloons as our main design ideas. Railroads on the ground also became a wayfinding sign, which guides people to the entire space; furthermore, we minimized the use of materials to reduce distraction and cost. Our elegant space design will be more focused on letting users sense the environment. Moreover, daylighting in our design reduced the cost of electricity and brought the warm and natural feeling inside the entire space.

Educational data shows the highest level of education attained by San Francisco residents is in Potrero Hill. Over 70% of residences have completed a bachelor’s degree or higher, which is higher than the San Francisco Metro (27%).
We thought this data told us that people study a lot in this district; therefore, the target users for this project will be children and local community.

Stair Seats and bookshelvesChildren love adventure and play. This area was created for children to have fun and enjoy reading. During their story time, stairs can bring all kids together and have them concentrate on story tellers.
Seeds Display and StorageThe Seed exchange is a specific difference from other branches. We designed the space below the staircase to use as an educational and decorated space for seeds.
Self-checkout machineWe kept the original design, which is convenient for communities to pick up their book orders and checkout.Legend

Multipurpose SofaWe combined the function of bookshelf and seat in a piece of furniture. This way could reduce the use of bookshelves which block the good views of the curtain walls.
Books Sharing ColumnTo bring the community closer, all the columns are designed for use of book sharing activites. They will be use in special holidays and different hot issues.

Materials
We tried to minize the use of materials, and also make it simple, clean, and bright. We want this space attract people to feel the calm and quiet when they are reading. However, we still pick some bright colors in children’s area. The materials suit for school use and meet the fire code.
Branding Strategy
The specialty in our design was periodical book sharing activities. The events will be held every holiday, important historical date, and season; such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day, to name a few. In our project, we designed a book sharing event for Christmas. This event was focused on children of the neighborhood during the Christmas season. The goal of the event will be based on Christmas story sharing and handmade Christmas cards.
