ON THE ROAD
If youve never sat in a Golf MkII, you may
be surprised at how well screwed together the
interior is. The 1.8-litre engine offers a spirited
hot-hatch performance, allied with fine handling.
This GTI is has weathered two decades and
a lot of miles under its belt, but driveability is
impressive surefooted and confidence inspiring.
The engine seemed a little unwilling at first, but
the car has not been driven for several months
and really needed an Italian tune-up. The brakes
worked well, but needed a good shove.
BODYWORK
This is impressively straight, with the blackish
blue metallic paintwork in good order. We
noticed one or two minor blemishes, a few chips
in the paint lacquer and a tiny dimple or two,
but no stone chips at the front. The plastic body
trim sections around the wheelarches and along
the sides of the doors have survived intact, as
have the bumpers, with only a minute scuff at
the front nearside corner. The sliding sunroof is
perfectly serviceable. The complete underside of
the car has been Body Guard undersealed.
INTERIOR
This is so well preserved and incredibly clean that
its truly outstanding. The carpets show virtually
no wear and there are no tears anywhere. The
supportive seats, in dark grey with a red weave
in the centre section, look virtually new, and the
foam hasnt sagged or crumbled. Its the same
story with the black headlining its in superb
condition, as are the doorcards. The dashboard
is perfectly preserved and theres not a sign of a
scratch on the plastic instrument fascia.
RUNNING GEAR
For most of its life the car has been regularly
serviced at a Volkswagen main dealership, with
a profusion of entries in the service log book, up
to 185,000 miles in 2003. Recent work in 2014
includes replacement of all linkages and bushes
on the gear selector system, a new cambelt,
alternator, water pump, battery, balljoint, track
rod ends, plus a full engine and braking system
overhaul. More than 4000 has been spent to
make everything tip-top. The BBS alloy wheels
have been refurbished and although all the tyres
have plenty of tread, they are all different makes.
Many of the wheel nuts are rusty, but these will
be renewed prior to sale.
OUR VERDICT
This is a well maintained GTI, with evidence to
back this up. With some minor exceptions, this is
at a high level of serviceability and presentation.
The stunningly well-preserved interior has to be
seen to be believed. Paul Bussey
While this GTI may have clocked up more than 220,000 miles, youll never believe it when you sit inside for the first time
