OOctober 15, 2017
'Tell those invited: "Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast."'
A week ago, Wednesday, specifically the evening of October 4th, I was jogging around our Church about 9:45pm and was drawn to this bright light in the sky. I tried to capture it on the cover here but no photo can portray the awe, magnificent beauty and wonder of what I was looking up at. I thought this must be the “Harvest Moon”, looked on the calendar, and, indeed it was! The Harvest Moon is the full Moon nearest the start of Fall or the autumnal equinox. This usually means it coincides with the September full Moon, though it can also fall nearer to the October full Moon, occurring anywhere from two weeks before to two weeks after the equinox. This year, it actually rose the next night, October 5th, at 2:40pm (EST), but the cloudy sky prevented us from viewing it that night. For several evenings, the moonrise comes soon after sunset. This results in an abundance of bright moonlight early in the evening, which was a traditional aide to farmers harvesting their summer-grown crops. Hence, it’s called the “Harvest” Moon! So much for the science lesson…but this beautiful sight lighting up our Church drew me back in thought to the beginning of the Bible, (Genesis 1:14-18), where God revealed that the moon was meant to have tremendous meaning and significance for mankind. He said, “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky, to separate day from night. Let them mark the seasons, the days and the years, and serve as lights in the dome of the sky, to illuminate the earth. And so it happened: God made the two great lights, the greater one to govern the day, and the lesser one to govern the night, and the stars. God set them in the dome of the sky, to illuminate the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good.”
In the last few weeks we’ve heard several parables from Jesus involving the harvest, and today, Jesus continues to speak to the chief priests and elders in another parable now that the harvest is done. The king sends his servants into the streets to invite people to the feast, since those who were invited did not come, showing their own unworthiness. The servants bring back a variety of people but the king sees how some are not wearing proper attire for a wedding banquet. They are invited but not chosen for they have not turned to the Lord and put on the proper garments. God persistently invites us to the royal banquet in the “kingdom of heaven.” But the gracious invitation requires our positive and definite response and living each day “in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.” (Ps. 23)
Let us continue our prayers for all the victims of the recent hurricanes and the tragedy in Las Vegas. And, as we continue our prayers during this Respect Life Month, let's help each other embrace God's gift of human life!
God Bless you all. May He watch over us and protect us in all our days. Fr. Jacek

FAITH FORMATION
FEAST OF ST. HEDWIG Patron of Brides, Widows,
Troubled Marriages, Death of Children Monday, October 16
Hedwig (Jadwiga) was born in Andechs, Bavaria, Germany, the daughter of the Duke of Croatia and Dalmatia, the aunt of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. At the age twelve, Hedwig was married to Duke Henry of Silesia (now Poland), the head of the Polish Royal family
and had seven children. Henry founded a Cistercain convent at Trebnitz, and hospitals and monasteries. Henry died in 1238 and upon his death she entered the Cistercian monastery and followed its rule. She wore the nuns’ habit but did not take vows since that would have deprived her of the right to administer her own property for the benefit of those in need. Her only son was killed in combat against the Tartar invaders. She died Oct.15, 1243, and is venerated as patroness of Poland. She is not to be confused with St. Hedwig, Queen of Poland (1371-99). Many miracles were reported after her death; she was canonized in 1266.
FEAST OF ST. LUKE, EVANGELIST Patron of Artists/Painters, Bookbinders,
Physicians, Butchers, Notaries Wednesday, October 18
St. Luke, a physician, from Antioch, was one of the first converts to Christianity. He accompanied St. Paul, who converted him, on his missionary journeys and was still with him in Rome when St. Paul was in prison awaiting death. Nothing is known of his last years. St. Luke's Gospel is principally concerned with salvation and mercy; in it are preserved some of our Lord's most moving parables, like those of the lost sheep and the prodigal son. It is also St. Luke who tells us the greater part of what we know about our Lord's childhood. His inspiration and information for his Gospel and Acts came from his close association with Paul and his companions in his introduction to the Gospel: "Since many have undertaken to set down an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed on to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, I too decided, after investigating everything carefully from the very first, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus" (Luke 1:1-3).
