CHORDATESCHAPTER 30
• Identify the characteristics that all chordates share
• Explain what vertebrates are.
• Describe the two groups of non-vertebrate chordates
Learning Target 30.1
• Members of the phylum Chordata are called chordates
• All chordates share four characteristics:
•a dorsal hollow nerve cord
•a notochord•a pharyngeal pouches •a tail that extends
beyond the anus
The Chordates
More Chordates are Vertebrates
• More than 99% of all chrodates are placed in the subphylum Vertebrata
• The backbone replaces the notochord in most developing vertebrates
Nonvertebrate Chordate
• The two groups of nonvertebrate chordates are tunicates and lancelets.
1. Tunicates: the larval form has all of the
chordate characteristics.
Nonvertebrate Chordate
2. Lancelets: The small fishlike creatures called lancelets that live on the sandy ocean bottom.- Have a closed circulatory
system - Do not have a true heart
Can you tell me the
characteristics of a chordate? (there are 4)
1. a dorsal hollow nerve cord
2.a notochord3.a pharyngeal pouches 4.a tail that extends beyond the anus
