2,2-Diphenyl-1,3-diones. — Benzyne precursor (II) reacts with phenylbutanedione (Ib) in the presence of copper(I) bromide as the catalyst to afford the α,α-diphenyl-sub-stituted dione (IIIb) instead of the benzyne insertion product. To broaden the substrate scope, a variety of 1,3-diones under optimized conditions is subjected to this surprising reaction.
