(Shishu-kan),KyotoUniversity,JapaninJanuary2019focusing on environmental psychology, translatingengineeringpractices intopublicengagement. This isin line with my involvement as the ASEAN Scienceand Technology Fellow focusing on the strategicrecommendationsforwatersectortransformationwiththeAcademyofSciencesMalaysia.In2018,IreceivedtheprestigiousL’Oréal-UNESCOforWomeninScienceFellowshipawardfortheaerobicgranulationdevelop-mentresearchusingpalmoilmilleffluent. SincejoiningUTMin2008,Ihavebeeninvolvedinvariouswastewatertreatmentstudiesutilizingaerobicgranularsludge.ThefirststudywasconductedformyPhDwherebyaerobicgranularsludgewasdevelopedusingindustrialwastewatersourcedfromoilmillpalmswhich is in abundance in Malaysia. Aerobic sludge

granulation is the unique transformation of microbialbio-flocs into compact aerobic granular sludge. Thissludge eliminates the biomass-liquid separation prob-lems that are commonly associated with the conven-tionalactivatedsludgetreatmentofagro-basedwaste-water, such as palm oil mill effluent. Consequently, aerobic granular sludge has a high potential to over-comethepoorsettlingpropertiesofactivatedsludge.In contrast to anaerobic granular sludge, an under-standingofthemicrobialpopulationdynamicsinaerobicgranulationenvironmentswasalsoinvestigated.Aerobicgranularsludgecanbeusedtotreatvarioustypesofwastewaterincludingdomesticwastewater.Inmypaper,Iwillsharesomefindingsrelatedtothetreatmentoflow-strengthdomesticwastewaterusingaerobicgran-ulation technology in a sequencing batch reactor.Activatedsludgewasusedastheseedingforgranula-tion. The results indicated good chemical oxygendemand(COD)andammoniacalnitrogenremovalsat72%and73%, respectively.Aerobicgranularsludgewas successfully developed with low sludge volumeindex(SVI30) of 29 mL g-1, which demonstrated anexcellentsettlingpropertiesofthegranules. ThiswillbemyfirstparticipationattheJSWEannualconference. Looking forward to share and exchangeresearch experiences with distinguished experts, academia and students. As an International WaterAssociation(IWA)Fellow andFulbrightUS-ASEANVisitingScholar, Iwish toalso sharemyexperiencesbeing involved in the water sector at global level.Looking forward to contribute to the forthcomingprograms and activities under the auspices of JSWE,forthebenefitofmankindandsociety.

As a nominee of the JSWE-IDEA ‘Water Environ-ment InternationalExchangeAward’, Iwould like tothankcommitteemembersandallthemembersoftheJapan Society of Water Environment. AlthoughCOVID-19 prevents us to meet at the 54th annualconference(Iwate Univ, March 16-18), I feel deeplyhonoredtohavebeenselectedasoneofawardeesandhaveachance tomake friendswithmanycolleaguesworkingatthesameresearchanddevelopmentfield. My prior andcurrentresearchbackgroundshave inspiredmewithseveralresearchareassuchasphotobioreactorsystem,high-rate anaerobic digestion system, novel microbialengineeringsystemsforwastewatertreatments.Mostof the possible topics are strongly related to mydoctoral and post-doctoral researches at KAIST andArizona State University. Since I joined JeonbukNationalUniversity,Ialsoparticipateinresearchesonadvanced oxidation processes using non-thermalplasma technology to reduce emerging/persistentorganicpollutantsinthevarioussecondaryeffluents. Mygreatestchallenge is tofindmeans toestimaterightkineticandstoichiometricconstantsinmathemat-icalexpressionstopredictthebehaviorofmicrobialorphysico-chemical reaction mechanisms precisely.

Successful characterization of advanced systems canallowmetoconductasimulationbenchmarkfortreat-ment performance improvement. I expect to provideoverallbigpicturesandcorefeaturesofsuchtechnolo-gies thatwillwork forhumansocietyasa treatmentsystem. By suggesting a mathematical model, wecouldpredicthowthevaryingconcentrationsofMCsareassociatedwiththemicroalgaldegradationkineticsduring the NTP application. Our findings verify thatNTP might have a better performance than otherAOPs for microalgal biomass and toxin control insurfacewater. First of all, Iwould like to thank JapanSociety onWaterEnvironment(JSWE)committee for awardingme the JSWE-IDEA International Exchange Award.WiththerecommendationfromtheChineseSocietyforEnvironmentalSciencesandthesupportoftheJSWE-IDEAInternationalExchangeAward,Iwasinvitedtoattend the 54th Annual Conference of JSWE held inIwatefromMarch16–18,2020.It ismygreathonorto be awarded and I thanks for all the support andhelpfrombothChinaandJapansides. I got my doctoral degree in the EnvironmentalEngineering, Tsinghua University in March, 2002. Icontinued the study on water reuse at PekingUniversity as a postdoctor. Since I joined in SunYat-senUniversity,Ihavebeenworkingonthefieldofthebioelectrochemicalsystem(BES)andwaterreuse.Myresearchmainlyfocusesonthewastewatertreat-mentandreclamationusingtheBESs.Ihavetriedtodevelopmicrobial electrolysis desalination and chemi-cal-production cell(MEDCC) for desalination andrefractoryorganiccompoundsremovalandprovedtheMEDCCconsuminglowenergyinthedesalination.Myrecentresearchtopicsareindustrialwastewatertreat-ment including pharmaceutical and textile wastewa-ters, hydrogen peroxide production and seawaterdesalination using BES, other environmental applica-tionsofBES. In this conference, I submitted my research workabout pesticide wastewater treatment, entitled by“Pesticide wastewater treatment using the combina-tion of the microbial electrolysis desalination andchemical-production cell and Fenton process”. Realwastewaterwithseveral toxicpesticides,1633mgL-1COD,and200inchromaticitywasusedfortheinvesti-

The COD in the effluent of the MEDCCcombined the Fenton process was much lower thanthat in the perixo-coagulaiton process(< 150 vs. 555mgL-1).Overall,thecombinedmethodconsumedmuchlessenergyandacidforthepHadjustmentthanthattheFenton.Iwilltrytoscaleupourcombinedsystemfor the real pesticide wastewater treatment in nextstep. The coronavirus outbreak all over theworldmadethis prestigious conference postponed, but gave us alessonthatweshouldcommunicateandshareourfind-ings so as to make the world a better place. Theconferenceprovidessuchaverygoodchancetohaveinterestingideas, makenewfriedandmeetoldfriendswhohaveknowneach other through the symposiumbetweenenvironmentalsocietiesfromChinaandJapaninrecentyears.Ibelievethattheconferencewouldbeverysuccessfulandhighvaluableforanyresearchersinthewaterenvironmentafterweovercomethecoro-navirusoutbreak. First of all, I would like to express my thanks toJSWE-IDEA committee for awarding me this greathonor in the 54th Annual Conference which wasplannedtobeheldinIwateonMarch16-18,2020. IcompletedmyPh.D.atTsinghuaUniversityintheSchool of Environment. After that, I continued myresearch on anaerobic treatment of organic waste atTohoku University Japan as a post-doctor supportedby the JSPS program. In 2014, I joined ChinaAgricultural University and work on the treatmentandrecyclingofagriculturalwaste.Myresearchfocusonovercomingeconomicandtechnologicalbarriersofcurrentanaerobicdigestiontechnologiesthroughinno-vation on biological, physical and chemical process. Ihave also committed to the fundamental researchwhich supports the creation of innovative anaerobicprocess and reactors. The main objectives of myresearch are to upgrade the anaerobic digestionperformance to enhance the bioenergy production, producematuredandpathogenfreedigestate, andthehigh quality treated wastewater. Anaerobic digestion

(AD)canthusplayamoreimportantroleinagricul-turetreatmentandrecycling. Forattendingthe54thJSWEconference,IsubmittedapaperwhichproposedanoveltwostageADprocessfor nitrogen rich waste. It was well known that theslow hydrolysis rate and ammonia inhibition effectssignificantly limited the performance of anaerobicdigestion. Innovative two stage AD was thereforeinvestigated for chicken manure, a typical nitrogenrich waste, by combining hyper-thermophilic(70°C)pretreatment anda subsequent submergedflat sheet

anaerobicmembranebioreactor(AnMBR).Inaddition,anin-situstrippingwasassembledintotheAnMBRtoremove the ammonium-N being intended to alleviatetheinhibitioneffects. Through the 120-day continuously fed experiment,thehydraulicretentiontimewasoptimizedat4and15days for the pretreatment andAnMBR, respectively. The hyper-thermophilic pretreatment reactor effec-tively hydrolyzed the substrate and produced totalVFAashighas22.4gL-1.Themethanogenicactivitywasnotcompletelyinhibitedinthehyperthermophilicreactor. Methane was thus also produced at 78mLgVS-1withacontentof24%CH4. IntheAnMBRreactor, the biogas yield(85% CH4) reached 333mLgVS-1atHRT15d.ComparedthecontrolAnMBR,thebiogasproductionwasnoticeablyenhancedby71%throughammoniastripping,reached392mLgVS-1.The ammonium-N concentration was reduced fromaround 5750 mg L-1 to 3060 mg L-1 under HRT 15d.The ammonia inhibition effects were therefore miti-gated. During the whole experiment, microfiltrationperformance of the membrane kept stable.Conclusively, the two stageADprocessmayprovideanalternativeapproachforthetreatmentofnitrogenrichorganicwaste.Theoptimizationofammoniastrip-pingandlongtermmembraneoperationmaintenanceisstillworthyoffurtherstudy. Onceagain,IamgratefulfortheorganizationoftheJSWEactivities. The 55th annual conference is highlyexpected.Thecommunicationthroughtheconferencemayprovidemore opportunities for fostering innova-tioninanaerobictreatmentofwater.
