mission statement
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an
evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message
is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God.
Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet
human needs in His name without discrimination.
Central KentuCKy area serviCes 2012 annual report
SM
Dear Friends,
Meeting people at their point of need and communicating the love of God through practical expressions of compassion is the mission of The Salvation Army.
Daily we work to piece together broken lives. It is a big job that gets bigger every year. We experienced a 25% percent increase in homeless women and children seeking emergency shelter last year. We saw similar increases in the number of people served in our food pantries, after school programs, and other services.
Just as the poor, hungry and homeless rely on The Salvation Army, the Army relies on you to provide the necessary support for the many services that lift people to a better life. On behalf of The Salvation Army Advisory Board and staff, we thank you for your generosity and prayer. As we strive to Do The Most Good, we ask that you continue your vital support.
Your support is the piece of the puzzle that makes it all possible! We need you.May God bless you.

KATHY CHENEY Emergency Shelter
Kathy Cheney faced very difficult life circumstances when her husband lost his job and the family lost their home. The Cheney’s moved into an extended stay hotel, but time and money quickly ran out. When the couple decided to separate, and with nowhere else to go, Kathy and her son Michael turned to The Salvation Army for help. Kathy calls it a smart decision because “we have a warm place to sleep, our own room, andsomethingtoeateveryday–that’sespeciallyimportantwhenyouhaveathirteen-year-oldboy.”KathyisgratefulTheSalvationArmyhasprovidedastableenvironmentand school clothes for Michael.

“I appreciate the support and encouragement my sons receive with their school work.” — Beth Milburn
While The Salvation Army is dedicated to providing for those who are struggling with poverty and homelessness, we are also determined to put an end to one of its main causes – a lack of education.
Beth and Jim Milburn’s two sons, Graydon and Elie, regularly attend the afterschool program, summer camp, basketball league, and no school fun days at The Salvation Army. “Our family loves being a part of The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club. I especially appreciate the support and encouragement my sons receive with their school work. My boys know that school comes first,” states Beth. One of the Club’s tutors, Ms. Linda Wilson, a Fayette County School teacher, has high praise for Elie’s efforts to complete his homework. Elie was presented with the Education Award at last year’s Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club Annual Luncheon for his outstanding work and positive attitude.

CARLA SMALL Food Pantry
After enduring several years of domestic violence, Carla Small made the difficult, but courageous, decision to leave and begin life on her own terms withherthreechildren.Atfirst,Carlaworkedandmanagedtomakeendsmeet. Unfortunately, she was laid off from her job at the end of 2012 which created many hardships. As her economic situation worsened, she often found it challenging to believe that somehow things would work out for the best.Hereleven-year-oldsonhelpedrenewherfaithwhenhesaid,“Goddidn’tbringusthisfartoleaveusnow.”
Carla has once again found employment. However, as is the case with many families today, her paycheck is not always enough to meet their basic needs. The heart of this Army is found in its spiritual ministry. From here, we reach out to heal wounds of the soul, to share the love of Jesus Christ, and to proclaim God’s promise of salvation.
William Booth, founder of The Salvation Army, realized that one could not preach salvation to someone whose stomach was empty. Booth also understood that simply feeding hungry stomachswouldnotliftpeoplefromhopelessnessanddespair.Trueandlastingchangetakesplace from the inside out. It is a work of God’s grace.
Today, inadditiontoexpressingGod’sloveinpracticalwaysthroughourvarioussocialserviceprograms, we provide opportunities for adults and children to hear the gospel message. Worship services, Sunday School classes, and Bible studies are open to our clients and to the community at large. You are welcome to join us.

The William Booth Society is The Salvation Army’s most prestigious donor recognition program. ItisnamedforthefounderofTheSalvationArmywhobeganhelpingindividualsinLondonwho were considered outcasts of society –the homeless, the poor, and the destitute. William Booth Society members are invariably among the leaders who cause positive change in their communities. I am doing the most good.I am hope.I am compassion.I am strength.I am faith.I am doing the most good.I serve a community.A region.A nation.A world.I serve heroes.I serve victims.I serve a sovereign God.I am doing the most good.I am an Army.Drafted by the Creator.Commissionedbyamanwhodefieddeath.My enemies are despair and destruction. My ammunition is grace and mercy. My allies are generosity and benevolence.
I am an Army.Helping others be all they can be.I am doing the most good.I feed empty stomachs and hungry souls.I rebuild ruined homes and shattered lives.I am a willing listener for a veteran with stories to tell.I am a bottled water and an encouraging smileforawearyfirefighter.I am an answered prayer.A silver lining.A second chance.I am doing the most good.I am a humble steward of other people’s generosity.I am a grateful courier of a stranger’s kindness.I am the faithful executor of others’ goodwill.I take my responsibility seriously.I am blessed.I am a blessing.I am The Salvation Army.I am doing the most good.
...the promise of The Salvation Army.
