President Message ごあいさつ
To place in the top four in the FIFA World Cup. This is the goal that the Japan National Team "SAMURAI BLUE", lead by Coach Okada, has set for themselves for the World Cup in South Africa. Hearing the words "top four", there are those who would question this thinking, considering Japan's ranking in 45th place. However, if the strengths of Japanese football, such as the speed, agility, and intelligent plays, are put to effective use, it should be possible to beat the opponents who excel in physique and power. In Japan's fourth World Cup in a row, we are dead set on placing in the "top four" and making "SAMURAI BLUE" a name known throughout the world.
Japanese football, which has advanced by leaps and bounds since the inception of the J. League, has made it to the World Cup ever since its first entry in France in 1998. The World Cup is no longer a dream competition for us, and the attitude of the Japanese people toward it is changing to one of aiming for the top eight or top four, let alone making it through the group stage.Growing stronger in football is essential for Japan, a developing country with respect to this sport, for stepping out on to the global stage. On the other hand, efforts for development in Japanese football looking forward to the next 20 and 30 years are also essential. The importance of "training and cultivation" is being reaffirmed in the leading football nations, and the inclusion of human and social education in athlete training is becoming the norm. In countries where such efforts have been adopted, the talents
of athletes blossom when they are young, adding depth and value to the football of that country.Modern football is constantly changing. In order for Japan to ride this current, a framework that is exemplary of Japan's abilities should be developed based on the keyword of "world standards" in order to turn out many talented athletes. The most important factor for this is the training of athletes starting with the children's age group. Further, it is necessary to aggressively move forward with improving the J. League, training coaches and referees, and improving the football environment.Japan is a candidate for hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2022. If this is realized, then the athletes who will compete at that time are today's youth age group. It is also necessary to maintain a view for the future and take specific action in order to realize the dream presented in "The JFA Declaration, 2005" to host a FIFA World Cup in Japan at which the Japan National Team will be the Champion by 2050.Asia has the largest population in the world. Within Asia, Japan comprises a unique people with a national character of hospitality and a diligent and exacting spirit, possessing numerous resources that are the envy of the world such as our advanced infrastructure and cutting edge technology. I wish to realize the hosting of the World Cup in Japan in 2022 and utilize the greatness of Japan for the development of World Cups of the future and of football throughout the world. To this end also, I want Japan to achieve a superb performance at the World Cup and surprise the world.

The three-legged crow holding a ball is called "Yatagarasu" and represents the god of day, namely, the sun, cited from a classical book of old China. It is believed that the Yatagarasu provided Emperor Jimmu and his army with directions on his expedition to the East and so there is a familiarity with the bird in Japan. The yellow and blue colors of the flag represent fair play and youth, respectively, thereby suggesting Japan Football Association's spirit of fairness backed by the vigorous power of youth.

岡田 武史
After the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany ended, Ivica Osim, who had taken over as head coach of the Japan National Team, had a stroke, and Takeshi Okada took over the responsibilities of head coach on short notice.Coach Okada was promoted from assistant coach to head coach during the Asian qualifications for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France and carried Japan to its first appearance at the FIFA World Cup. After that, he directed Consadole Sapporo and the Yokohama F. Marinos. He demonstrated his skills through such feats as bringing Consadole Sapporo up in rank to the J.League 1st division and leading the Yokohama
F. Marinos to the J. League championship twice. For this his second term as head coach of the Japan National Team, Coach Okada, with his extensive experience, will engage in football that puts to the fore the characteristic Japanese style of breaking down the opponent by outrunning them, working hard and aggressively on all aspects including defense based on his concept of "all players offensive, all players defensive" to face opponents from throughout the world. In this Japan's fourth FIFA World Cup, the goal will be to reach the top four and to surprise the world in this event that is the pinnacle of the football world.

2010 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers Review 2010 FIFA ワールドカップ アジア予選レビュー
The Japan National Team SAMURAI BLUE, aiming to participate in the fourth FIFA World Cup in a row, began its fight in February 2008. In the third round of qualifications for Asia, Japan found itself in the same group as Bahrain, Oman, and Thailand. While Japan beat Thailand with a score of 4-1 in the first home game, they lost to Bahrain in the second match. However, they were able to amass points steadily after that to place first in their group in the final Asian qualifications. In the final Asian qualifications of September 2008, Japan was put into the same group with Australia, Bahrain, Uzbekistan, and Qatar. In the first match Japan faced Bahrain who they had already played against in the third round of qualifications, and they took a three goal lead resulting from goals by Shunsuke Nakamura and others, making for a strong start. However, their opponents came back with two goals at the last moment making for a dicey finish, but were still able to achieve those three points which are priceless in an away game. This was followed by a home game against Uzbekistan in which they were under strong pressure from the opponent's attack and were unable to go on the offensive, giving up the first goal. While they were able to match this with a goal scored by Keiji Tamada, they were unable to flip the balance and the game ended in a draw. Japan arrived in Doha for the following game which played out to be a match in which the team brought their tenacity to win to the fore. They beat Qatar with goals scored by Tatsuya Tanaka, Tamada, and Marcus Tulio Tanaka, adding points to their total. In the February 2009 home game against Australia, considered the toughest opponent in the group, Japan did its best to slice through the opponent's strong defense, but to no avail. Unable to find an opportunity to score until the end, the game ended in a goalless draw. Finally in March 2009,
Japan, with no home wins to date, entered the final qualification with a home game against Bahrain. Japan entered the game with the coach's strong words "I'm not considering anything other than a win; I'm convinced we will win", aggressively and boldly reaching toward a goal. Just at the start of the second half, Shunsuke Nakamura and Yasuhito Endo stood before the goal for a free kick. Shunsuke Nakamura passed the ball lightly to Endo who stopped it, and Nakamura made the shot. The ball entered the goal and upset the balance against Bahrain. With this extra point, Japan's score rose to 11 points putting entry into the World Cup within their grasp.Just one step away from the World Cup, Japan played against Uzbekistan in an away game on June 6, 2009. With SAMURAI BLUE carrying the expectations of the supporters who traveled to see the game and the viewers at home, Shinji Okazaki scored a priceless goal at the nine minute mark. While the opponent also staged an aggressive offensive, the team fought as one, achieving a tenacious win. Japan secured their place in the FIFA World Cup for the fourth time in a row, as the first team in the world to qualify, following on from the previous World Cup in Germany.Bringing their place in the FIFA World Cup home to Japan as a gift, Japan then faced Qatar. While they gained an early point due to an own goal by the opposite team, they gave up a penalty kick in the second half and the game ended in a 1-1 tie with Japan unable to win. In the final game, Japan faced Australia, already qualified for entry into the World Cup, in an away game. Japan led with a goal from a header by Tulio, but gave away two goals in the second half under pressure from Australia which overturned the game to a loss making Japan unable to gain a win in their final game.

Advancement in Japanese Football 日本サッカーの躍進
This is the fourth time in a row for Japan to have qualified for the FIFA World Cup. The first time was in 1998, a major achievement 34 years after Japan's first entry into the Asian qualifications for the World Cup in 1954. In 2002, Japan succeeded in co-hosting the World Cup with Korea, placing in the top 16, breaking through the group stage in their second appearance at the World Cup.Japan achieved three victories in the AFC Asian Cup, including consecutive victories in 2000 and 2004. Leading Asia in the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup, Japan overcame leading countries such as Brazil and Mexico to come in second place.Since the establishment of the J.League, Japanese football has advanced by leaps and bounds, and the World Cup has become a competition not to dream of but one in which top placement is attainable. The professional league J.League was established
in 1993. The league became explosively popular immediately f rom i ts incept ion and a new generation of football fans and sports fans were born in Japan where football had previously been a lackluster sport. Today that popularity is exceeded only by baseball and sumo wrestling. One factor that increased that popularity quickly was the presence of such world class star athletes as Zico, Pierre Littbarski, Dragan Stojkovic, Dunga, and Leonardo. Many fans and children were mesmerized by the outstanding performances they made on the pitch. Not only their skill, but their mentality as professionals took root in the Japanese football world. Their impact is still felt today even after retiring as athletes, with Zico coaching the Japan National Team in 2002, and Stojkovic coaching Nagoya Grampus.By coming into contact with the playing skills of first class world athletes, the clubs of the J.League
learned by example to make giant steps forward. The J.League, which began with ten clubs, is today divided into the two divisions of J1 and J2, with 18 clubs in J1 and 19 clubs in J2 competing to rise up to victory. Each club is steadily increasing its competitiveness each year, and this strength has started to be proven in competitions throughout Asia and the world in recent years. In 2007, the Urawa Reds won the AFC Champions League, followed by Gamba Osaka the following year in 2008. Each performed well to reach third place in the FIFA Club World Cup in which Japan entered as the best in Asia. It can thus be said that Japan is becoming a prominent force in Asian football not only with the national team but at the club level as well. The growth of Japanese football is not limited to the development and expansion of the J.League. Using the keyword of "world standards", the JFA is pressing forward with spreading popularity and
a three in one strengthening strategy of "national team strengthening", "youth education", and "coach training", while also focusing efforts on the cultivation of excellent coaches and the nurturing of youths. Further, the JFA Academy was established to carry out elite education including human education. One of the results of these efforts was the entry by Japan into the 1996 Atlanta Olympics for the first time in 28 years. With Hidetoshi Nakata, Japan beat the Brazilian team which featured such top players as Rivaldo and Ronaldo with a score of 1-0 for a historic victory. Since then, Japan participated in the Olympics four times in a row up to the Beijing Olympics. In the youth age group, Japan placed second in the FIFA World Youth Championship (now the FIFA U-20 World Cup) held in Nigeria in 1999. as Shinji Ono, Junichi Inamoto, Naohiro Takahara, and Mitsuo Ogasawara, shined brilliantly on that occasion. The environment surrounding the athletes is improving with advanced facilities and talented coaches, and among the athletes trained therein, some are showing their skills throughout Asia and the world beginning at a young age. Takayuki Morimoto joined the Italian team Catania at the age of 18 in 2006. Last season he played in 23 games scoring 7 goals. Keisuke Honda, who went to Netherlands in 2007 at the age of 21, transferred
to CSKA Moscow (Russia) in 2010. He advanced to the quarter finals in the UEFA Champions League. Many other Japanese athletes are now active throughout the world, particularly in Europe. Further, athletes such as Shunsuke Nakamura, Ono, and Inamoto, who gained experience in Europe's top leagues, are returning to the J.League to contribute that experience to Japanese football. The Japanese football community will continue to turn out as many athletes like them as possible and work to make the Japanese National Team SAMURAI BLUE one of the top ten in the world. 2009 J.League Champion Kashima Antlers

the people of many nations. Not only were many stadiums and practice facilities built or improved for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, but the Japanese people received many gifts both tangible and intangible, including amicable international relations and social interaction that crossed generational boundaries.Further, the JFA is a candidate to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and is currently engaged in promotional activities with the support of the entire Japanese football community. We will be increasing our momentum to make possible a World Cup that only Japan could put on while making comprehensive preparations so that football fans in Japan and throughout the world can enjoy a great event again in Japan. And finally, we will continue to improve the skill of the Japan National Team so that they can win that event.
The fiscal scale of the JFA has increased with help from the spread and development of football and the success of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and it has become involved in countless activities through football. The JFA is a member of the "Team Minus 6%" citizen's project for the prevention of global warming being promoted by the government with the Ministry of the Environment in the lead. Further, trash separation and paper cup recycling activities are being carried out at stadiums together with Kirin Group, the official sponsor for the Japan National Team, and the fans and supporters who come to watch the matches. In 2007, an "Environment Project" was started, formed by persons related to

By hosting top level world football events in Japan, the JFA enables the many football fans and supporters in Japan to experience those events while promoting the spread and growth of soccer. The Japan Cup, which began in 1978 with invitations to national teams and club teams from all over the world, changed its name to the Kirin Cup in 1985, and the following year it became an event in which the Japan National Team participates. In 1992 it was accredited as an international "A" match by FIFA, and today it is an important opportunity for strengthening the Japan National Team. The first FIFA sponsored competition hosted by Japan was the 1979 FIFA World Youth Championship (now the FIFA U-20 World Cup). A young Diego Maradona (now the head coach of the Argentina national team) visited Japan as a member of the Argentina
national team, achieving victory while wowing Japan's football fans with his amazing playing skills. Also, for 25 years between 1981 and 2004, Japan held the TOYOTA European/South American Cup in which the grand champions of Europe and South America competed. Japanese football fans were intoxicated by the world's top level matches. In 2005, in recognition of Japan's quarter century of experience hosting events, Japan was chosen to host the FIFA Club World Cup where club champions from six continents compete fiercely to be first in the world. Since then, the event has been held in Japan each year up to 2008 and is scheduled to be held here again in 2011 and 2012.
In 1995, Japan became an official candidate to host the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and co-hosted the first FIFA World Cup to be held in Asia. This competition was called "the World Cup of smiles". Not only were the fans of the world able to fully enjoy the ultimate in football, but warm interaction between athletes and fans was possible in the hosting areas and camps, and friendship with Korea, who joined Japan in hosting the World Cup, was deepened. The World Cup was a great success in which the national character of the Japanese, their history, and culture was expressed to the world, gaining the approval of

the J.League and other key persons. In addition to encouraging the installation of more natural grass grounds throughout the country which are effective toward preventing global warming, the JFA is also promoting recycling and the use of public transportation, as well as other activities in order to contribute to the protection of the global environment.
With the establishment of the J.League in 1993, football in Japan has grown by leaps and bounds, and today the nations of Asia have come to request cooperation for the development of football throughout Asia. As a result, the JFA has become proactively involved in contribution activities in Asia beginning in 2002, supporting personnel training of the athletes and coaches of each nation as well as the cultivation of the youth. In 2009, the Asian
contribution activities were given the title of the "JFA DREAM ASIA PROJECT". Based on a more stable support structure made possible by solicitation of supporting companies, proactive support is provided including overseas deployment of coaches and referees and hosting of camps for national teams, including those of developing age groups. Further, a course which presents the coach development and referee training systems which are garnering attention from the nations of Asia is held every year. Additionally, financial support is provided for the foundation and operation of youth oriented competitions in each nation through the "Asia Youth Cultivation Program", and the JFA also cooperates with Dentsu Group and the National Federation of UNESCO Associations for efforts in the "Project to Deliver Soccer Balls to Asia's Children". The JFA aims for the development of Asian football through these numerous activities.
