What: An innovative social media program was run with MeetUp.com, an online social networking website where people with similar interests organize themselves online but
meet up offline.

When: This program was created as part of CDC’s 2011-2012 National Influenza Vaccination Campaign and specially supported the launch of National Influenza
Vaccination Week (NIVW) 2011 (December 4th – 10th, 2011).

• A total of 236 people who got vaccinated on their own; and
• Total number of people vaccinated during this program was 302.

Why does it matter?
The campaign with MeetUp was a first of it’s kind for CDC.
The program showed that social media could influence behavior change – going beyond awareness to get people vaccinated.
It opened the door for future programs where social media can be used to motivate people online to change behaviors and complete an action.
