Introduction
Almost all of the manuscripts from Burma in the library of the Wellcome Institute for the Hisrory
of Medicine were purchased before the death of Sir Henry S. Wellcome in 1936. They seen to
have been mainly bought at auctiorls in London. A few additions havc recently been made, mainly
because the texts touch on medicine. Wellcome seems to have intended to create a vast. Iibrary that
would contain much more than just books dealing with medicine. Many of the holdings not
directly connected with medicine have been sold or donated, but the collection of manuscripts,
including the largely Buddhist Burmese manuscripts, was kept.
The Burmese-Pdi manuscriprs of che Wellcome library were first catalogued by Jacqueline
Filliozat.' For this new catalogue, I havc prepared the entries for the Burmese-Pdi manuscriprs,
and Roger Bischoff prepared the entries for the Burmese manuscriprs. A number of changes and
corrections have been made co rhe Filliozat catalogue, so many, in facc, that it will no Iongcr be a
useful guide to the collection. The leaves of the manuscripts havc all been put in correct order.
A few texts had leaves scattered through different manuscripts, and these havc all been reunited.
Many identifications of manuscripts have been added to or changed.
The &@-five Karnmavki manuscripts comprise almost half of the one hundred twenty-one
manuscripts in the Burmese-PSli collection. These collections of "Verbal Acts" conrain texts that were
used for the ordination of a monk, setting the boundaries for an ordination hall, etc. DetaiIs
concerning rhe texts are found in Index T. The Kammavaca manuscripts were used by the morlks
when reciting these texts. A11 but one of these manuscripts are in the older ornate style, the textr;
being ~ainted in black lacquer on a background of red lacquer and gold or silver. The tamarind-seed
script found in these manuscripts i s no longer used in Burnla. These manuscripts are mainly of
artistic interest today. The first and last folios are usually decorared with floral designs and figures.
Two main styles can be identified. A selection of the designs used is included in the illustrations.
Type A is a more conservative style (going back to the Mon art of Pagan!), while Type B is clearly
influenced by Thai art.
Two other manuscripts are also of artistic interest-. WMS. Burmese-Pdi 93 has leaves made
from silk clothes belonging to King Mindon (reigned 1852-1 877). The cloth was stiffened and

gilded, and the text is painted on in black lacquer. WMS. Burmese 22 contains three manuscripts
of folded thick paper hound in leather and painted with scenes from the career of Buddha Gotama.
The last scene is when the Bodhisatra sees the four signs that makc him decide ro go forth from life
as a layman to seek an end ro suffering, so there were probably more manuscripts in this series.
The other manuscripts contain texts from the I'di canon, the commentaries on the canon,
post-canonical works, and Psli grammars (see index W). Many of the rexcs are incomplere.
Thc manuscripts in Rurmese include a history of Buddhism (WMS. Burmese I), texts on cAe
Abhidhamma (WMSS. Burmese 2, 41, texts on the monks' discipline (WMSS. Burmese 5.1, 1 O),
biographies of disciples of the Ruddha W S S . Burmese 7, 8, 9), and records of monastic courts
(WMSS. Burmese 1 1, 12, 13). Secular subjects include decisions on secular law (WMS. Burmese
3); horoscopes (WMSS. Rurmesc 15-19); a royal edicc (WMS. Burmese 20); manuscripts on
medicine, astrology, and magic (WMSS. Burmese 23, 24, 25); and a schooiboolr that probably
bclongd to a prince (WMS. Burmese 27).
Transliteration Tables
T have inclitded translitcrarion tables for rhree Burlncse scripts as rables for a11 three are not readily
available. There is no universally accepted transliteration of modern Burmese script, so ic is atways
useful to have a table with a work of this sort. I have also included both transliteration and
Burmese script in the catalogue whenever I felt it would be useful. Transcriptions are dso
included for some rlarnes and words, but once again, there are no gerlerally accepted rules for
transcribing Rurmese.
Two earlier scripts were used in manuscripts for writing Pdi. Karnmavzd texts were generally
written using black lacquer for what I designate tamarind-seed Burmese script, this being a translation
of the Burmese term for this script ( Q $ ~ $ : G $ ) . Anothw script was wed both in manuscripts where
the lettering is in black lacquer and in manuscripts ofpalm leaves engraved with a stylus. This script
T designate square Burmese script, follnwing the Burmese name { cm:~m~) . It should be noted that
*~RANSLITERKTION TABLBS
tables of the tamarind-sced script given in earlier Western books call it a square script.' The tarnarind-
seed Burmese script and the square Burmese script were used only for Pdi texts in the manuscripts in
the Wellcome collection, so the added vowels and tones of Burmese were nor wed.
The modern Burmese script, designated "round Rurrnese script" in the catalogue, includes
transliterations for both Pdi and Burmese texts. The main difference is the trar~slireration of the sign
XI. This sign docs not designare a sound in itself, hut indicates the inherent vowel a ox serves ro write
the vowels used in connectiorl wirh consonants. This means that there are twn ways to write initial
vowels orher than a and a in Burmcse. By using an inverted comma (') ro designate n in Burmese
words, the transliteration makes it possible co return to the original script. The inverted comma is not
used in Pdi texts or words as this would lead to confusion because the Rornani7ation of Pdi has been
long established. The letters invohed are: 2 ('i) or% (i), 2 ('i) or 9\ (j), ('u) or? (u), ('ii) or
(ii), 63-2 ('e) or^ {e), a n d ~ m (10) o r E (0).
Titles of works and names oFdonors were sometimes written in outline versions of the
tamarind-seed script or the round Burmese script. It is not necessary to give rables for these as they
are close to rhe regdar form of the scriprs. Examples from two manuscripts are given with the
jlluscrations.

Carl Faulmann, Dm Brrch der Schr~$ (Vienna: K.K. Hof- und Sraaudrudterei, 1878). pp. 142f., calls [he lamarind-seed script "Quadratschrift". 0. Fra~~kfurcer, Hnndbonk ufPnli (Iandon: \Viltiam & Norgate, 1883) calls the tamarind-seed script "Square Pdi".
