First Lego League Competition Winners Congratulations to our talented team of boys who entered the First Lego League Competition and took out first place in the presentation section. They have been working for weeks on the various components of this competition and I had the great pleasure of watching their presentation which was inspirational and very innovative. The team chose to use Minecraft Education to show how the recreational fields could be redesigned and put to better use. The team is to be congratulated on their fine effort and a big thank you to Mrs Cory Whitney for all of her work with the team.
Carnivale of Arts – A Big Success What an amazing evening we had at our biannual art show which successfully achieved it’s primary outcomes to: Showcase the talents of our students; Raise the profile of visual and performing arts; Host an event that builds upon our sense of community within the school; and raise funds to enable the P & C and the school to purchase resources to enhance teaching and learning, along with funds to implement special projects within our school community, particularly school beautification. There is a wealth of artistic talent within our school and our students did a great job of working together to produce their combined class art work for display. Both the students and teachers can be very proud of the work produced, which was outstanding. Thank you to Miss Holly Stanton-Gillan for her leadership of this project, to the Carnivale of Arts Committee for their guidance and organisation, to staff, the P & C, the canteen and food vendors, parents and students, judges, sponsors, volunteers and visitors for working together to make it the great evening that it was. It was a real team effort.

First Lego League Byron Bay Public School entered our first team ever in the First Lego League competition this year. The regional final was held at Emmanuel Anglican College last Saturday. It was a full day which tested the students on their ability to solve robotics challenges, present a solution to their innovation project, robot design and ability to show how their team adhered to the core values of the competitions. The team of 8 boys - Jack S, Finley S, Elliott F, Sam R, Kai H, Billy B, Leroy R and Marley L were excellent ambassadors for our school. They were highly articulate when presenting and speaking to judges and showed skills of collaboration, teamwork and problem solving throughout the day. They were competing against children from Years 5-8 (we had 2 Year 4 boys on our team). Overall there were over 39 teams from southeast Queensland to Ballina. We were overall winners of the innovation project section of the competition and came out with a well deserved trophy. Congratulations boys, I am so proud of the way you have given up so much of your own time and the way you all conducted yourselves on the day. Also thanks to all the parents who supported these boys and brought them to all the early morning sessions. Cory Whitney First Lego League Coach

The School of Life Project
The School of Life Project are currently rebranding their product and will now be known as The 5000 Days Project. Parents have the opportunity to create a video journal of their child’s journey throughout their school life with The School of Life Project. This involves students using an automated video monitor located at the school to answer age appropriate questions each year until they graduate from High School. Each year about 30 minutes of video will be collected and stored securely. The footage is available to students when they leave high school. The cost is $30 per student per year. For more information contact the school office. Filming for this project will commence in the next couple of weeks.

Primary Ethics Volunteer Teachers As the end of the year approaches, it’s time to put out a call to remind parents of the need for recruitment of voluntary teachers of Ethics so that the Program can continue at Byron Bay Public in 2020. This program has been running now for nine years and is very popular with parents who see the benefit of their children learning to think in a critical and fun way, about moral issues that arise in their children’s lives. The program can’t keep going however, without the work and commitment of volunteer teachers, most of whom are parents of students. If you want the program to continue and if you think you would enjoy guiding discussion please consider volunteering for a year. The next two-day training session for new volunteers will be happening before the end of the year or early in the new year. For more information and to read our selection criteria, please visit www.primaryethics.com.au or to speak to the local Coordinator please email Christine Willmot at [email protected]. I’m happy to meet with you to discuss the details of the program.
