Personal Views on Cognitive Theory
What is Cognitive Theory?
Cognition is defined as “the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses.
This results in perception, intuition and sensation
What is Cognitive TheoryCont…
Cognitive theory is how and why people learn by linking these to cognitive activity.
It began in the 1950’s as a branch from behaviorism because it was said that behaviorism neglected cognition.
It moves beyond behaviorism because is proposes that how one thinks effects how they behave which moves beyond thought being defined as behavior.
Who is InvolvedFirst up is Kurt Lewin
September 9, 1890 – February 12, 1947
Known as The Father of Organization Development
He earned this title for forming a research group at MIT that created change theory, action research and
action learning. T
This lead to the psychological equation that links behavior to environment. This allowed the
theory that thinking is not just a behavior but a product of it.

Robert Gagne
Identified 8 levels of intellectual skills
These outlined that there are different levels of learning and
each must be taught differently.

How do teachers implement it
• A teacher implements Cognitive learning theory into his or her class without technology by:
• Identifying different learning styles
• Creating a lesson plan that implements more then one learning style
How do teachers implement it cont…
A teacher implements Cognitive learning theory into his or her class with technology by:
Creating games on the internet that connect the lesson to different aspect of their minds
Power point, connecting information to visuals such as pictures and videos
Using Excel, Microsoft and Inspiration to create graphs organizing information
How do students use it
Students use Cognitive Learning Theory without technology by:
Doing activities in class as set forth from the teacher.
Understanding how they learn and expressing it when needed.
Doing an assignment in order of how they learn mentally.
How do students use itCont…
Students use Cognitive Learning Theory with technology by:
Creating power points that tie visuals to information
Web searching, gathering information at their own speed.
Organizing that information using excel and inspiration to bridge knowledge and understanding.
Personal Views on Cognitive Theory
I do believe that how we think affects how we act. And I believe that every teacher should implement as many different teaching strategies to ensure that every learning style is addressed.
Personal Views on Cognitive Theory Cont…I believe that it is the teachers responsibility to do as follows:
Identify the different learning styles in their class
Create a lesson plan that addresses those styles
Uses more than one teaching strategy to implement more than one aspect of the brain
Be able to do all of these things regardless of technology
