Accelerometers are commonly used in vehicle testing to measure and understand various performance criteria. Acceleration measurements complement vehicle devel-opment and testing to enhance reliability, durability, comfort, security, ride quality and noise vibration & harshness (NVH).
Kistler's IEPE* accelerometers offer many vehicle application benefits. For example, PiezoStar® accelerometers have very low temperature sensitivity which is ideal for dynamic temperature applications. K-Beam® variable capacitance accelero- meters provide DC response with low noise and temperature sensitivity.
Kistler's high impedance accelerometers provide measurements to 250 °C (482 °F) and measurement range flexibility with an external charge amplifier. Vehicle testing requirements demand sensor technolo-gies that span the application needs – as provided by Kistler accelerometers.

Power Train/NVHOptimizing vibration performance by analyzing the transfer path of the engine, transmission, mounts and exhaust system require accelerometers with high tempera-ture capability. PiezoStar Types 8766A…. and 8765A250M5 or Ceramic Shear Type 8763A… triaxial accelerometers provide
measuring ranges from 50 g to 1 000 g and are available for temperatures up to 165 °C. PiezoStar accelerometers provide the lowest temperature sensitivity which minimizes measurement errors related to temperature.
Modal Analysis/Structural TestingTriaxial modal accelerometers, like PiezoBeam Type 8690C… and Ceramic Shear Type 8762A… offer inexpensive solutions for SIMO or MIMO structural test-ing. Such testing includes "body in white" investigations which require a large number of high performing accelerometers at low
cost. Kistler modal accelerometers have three measurement ranges 5 g, 10 g and 50 g and offer an accurate frequency and phase response in the specifi ed frequency range. Single axis modal accelerometers (Type 8640A…) are also available in 5 g, 10 g, 50 g ranges with low mass and low noise.
DurabilityChassis testing on hydropulse shakers isperformed to simulate various driving con-ditions and assess the durability of the vehicle. Such testing requires accelerome-ters with low frequency response as
provided by the Kistler K-Beam variable capacitive MEMS accelerometers like the Types 8310B... and 8305B... . Some models also include differential signal formats.
Ride Quality/NVH Maximizing fuel effi ciency and minimizing pollution by reducing weight and improv-ing aerodynamic effi ciency are common requirements. Optimization has reduced ef-fective mass that was historically the means of providing resistance to undesirable noise and vibration transmission. Techniques have been developed to quantify "driving
condition" inputs and "how they feel" out-puts to the occupants using accelerometers. Kistler K-Beam variable capacitive MEMS accelerometers Types 8312B... and 8393B... provide DC response and stability to meas-ure the transmissibility from road inputs to passenger feel. The IEPE Piezostar triaxial 8766A.. and ceramic shear IEPE triaxial are also considerations for NVH testing.

Environmental Test Environmental testing subjects test items to one, some, or all of the following: tempera-ture, humidity, altitude/pressure, sinusoidal vibration, random vibration and shock. Such testing is performed to verify product design, manufacturability and reliability as well as to ensure survivability in the appli-cation. Miniature accelerometers such as
Types 8278A..., 8778A... and 8714B... can be mounted in the tightest locations and have low mass loading. Type 8278... is a high impedance accelerometer capable to 180 °C. PiezoStar Type 8703A provides thelowest sensitivity to temperature to mini-mize temperature errors in both control and response accelerometers.

Crash Safety Test The metal deformation and the metal to metal impacts excite very high frequency response in a car during impact in compari-son to standard deceleration measurements of the impact. For Crash Impact Sound Sensing (CISS) IEPE accelerometers
have suffi cient high resonance frequenciesfor testing. Types 8742A5... and 8776A500AB are IEPE single and triaxial accelerome-ters which provide over 80 kHz natural frequency. The sensors are easily glued or screwed to the test structure.
