HOW TO CHOOSE BRICKS
Before selecting bricks it’s worthwhile gathering ideas on the style of house you’d like to build, as the design can greatly influence the type of bricks you use. Now you’ve chosen ‘the look’ you want, what’s next?
3
STEP 1: YOUR HOME LOCATIONThe location of your home will help determine the type of bricks and mortar joints you need.
Exposure grade (EXP) bricks are made to withstand severe coastal conditions, including
homes subject to air borne salt spray. These bricks have enhanced durability ideal if your
home is located up to 1 kilometre from a surf coast or 100 metres from a non-surf coast,
on land with high saline soil, or is near a polluted atmosphere (such as an industrial site).
General Purpose (GP) grade bricks are suited to all other building types and locations.
STEP 2: COLOUR & TEXTUREThe look and feel of bricks you choose will help create your particular style of home. Boral brick
colours range from light tones to deep dark shades. Brick textures include the following:
• Smooth bricks have a consistent texture.
and almost ceramic appearance with straight edges.
• Velour bricks have a tightly grained texture and
straight edges.
• Torn face bricks have a dragged or ripped appearance
across the face giving them a weathered look.
• Rolled bricks are treated with distinctive patterns prior
to firing producing a variety of textures.
• Tumbled bricks have a rough texture and uneven edges
which give them a rustic look.
• Fritted bricks have a glass-like substance melted into
the surface for a mottled appearance.
STEP 3: SIZEDid you know bricks come in different sizes?
• standard, 76mm high bricks (230mm long x 110mm wide)
• double height, 162mm high bricks (230mm long x 110mm wide)
• slimline, 50mm high bricks (230mm Long x 110mm wide)
All brick sizes can be used for the entire house or in patterns,
window sills, feature walls, formal areas, fireplaces and architectural details.
STEP 4: MORTARYou may be surprised to know the colour and type of mortar joint
(between the bricks) can have a striking impact on the look of your bricks.
COMMON MORTAR COLOURS• Natural or grey • White or off white • Cream or buff
COMMON MORTAR JOINTSThe mortar joint refers to how the band of
mortar between the bricks is finished. Wherever
exposure grade bricks are used, finish with an
Ironed mortar joint to minimise erosion from salt. Raked Ironed Flush Struck

Building your home to beenergy efficient can be easierthan you think.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTIt’s all about taking a long-term view of our impact on the
environment. An energy-wise home will use the best combination
of sustainable building considerations such as site orientation
(where a home is positioned on a block), wall and ceiling
insulation, ventilation and building materials to reduce energy
consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. YOUR COMFORT AT HOMEIn Australia, it is estimated that 38% of energy use in homes is
for heating and cooling the spaces in which we live*. Bricks have
excellent thermal mass – the ability to absorb heat energy. This
means that with good design and planning, building with bricks
can actually make a difference to the temperature inside your
home and reduce the need for heaters and air-conditioners.
Great news for your comfort indoors and particularly helpful for
saving on energy costs.
Clay bricks used together with good design principles such as
solar passive design can make a significant difference to energy
consumption used for heating and cooling your home – energy
efficiency that is virtually ‘built in’.
Note: It is recommended solar passive design features are used in
combination not individually, and they are tailored to each climate.
‘Built in’ energy savings with solar passive design.
SOLAR PASSIVE DESIGN – HOW IT WORKSOrientation and solar access.
Site orientation or the position of the house relative to the sun –
house can take advantage of naturally available energy.
GLAZING AND SHADINGUse of eaves and glazing window and doors.
SEALING AND VENTILATIONCross ventilation – with openings on both sides of the home
means fresh breezes can circulate better. Thermal mass in
internal walls is still needed to help moderate (even out)
temperatures. Vents should also be installed in the roof space
to help regulate air flow year-round.
INSULATIONThe use of insulation to enable walls and ceilings to act as a
barrier to heat flow is essential to providing year-round comfort.
THERMAL MASSThis is the ability of a material to absorb heat energy. High
density materials such as bricks and tiles have high thermal mass
which when used correctly moderates internal temperatures by
averaging day/night extremes.
Thermal research^ has shown clay brick to be a superior building
material in providing comfortable (warm or cool), energy efficient
environments for people to live, work and play.
