Child Defense Strategies
S.L.A.P.
A child defending themselves against a full grown adult would bevery difficult to do. However these are some possible strategies
that could work. Start off by talking about S.L.A.P.
S.L.A.P.
Surprisefirst technique before attacker realises.
Leveragemaximum power from hips etc.Accuracystrike where it is meant to go.
Punctuationput intent behind the strike really mean it!
SurpriseSurprise attack.
At close range even a child can be successful with their first
strike.
A Childs primary goal is always run first and scream for help-
only strike as a last resort.
Instructor Visual TechniqueHave an assistant come out and fall into a fighting stance.
Face the assistant. Instructor hands close to assistants shoulder and slap
shoulder quickly. Have assistant try and block assistant cant because of
reaction time.
Show technique again this time winding up before strike so assistant can
block.
Show technique again this time instructor allow more distance so assistant
can block.

Softening Technique
Softening techniques are techniques used for the purpose of
Brain to PainIt gives the predator an OW to think about and
gives the child a chance to make an escape.
Explain that these techniques are NOT to be used of family etc. only
in true emergency situations. These are last resort measures and
are to be used if there is no other choice.
Head
1. Explain if hit in nose = watering eyes2. Explain if hit inside or back of neck = pain and stuns 3. Explain if poked in eyes = cant see4.
Explain if slapped in ears = stunned
Take kids through patternswith strike zones.
Instructor Visual Technique
Hit the assistant in the stomach (midsection) and explain that this will
not work for a child striking an adultchildren are not strong enough
and it would be a waste of time.
Now pretend to hit him in the groin and explain that where you hit
someone makes a big difference.
Now have the assistant bend over as if about to grab a child and point
out striking targets/zones.

Balance
Talk to the children about balance. Standing with your feet
together is not well balanced. L-stance is balanced.
Have the children stand in an L-stance.
Have the children put their hands up in front so elbows are one
fist length away from each other.
Have the children tuck their chin in slightly.
Have the children bend their front knee to close off groin area.
Abduction
What is Abduction? Abduction means that a person in the
course of a crime is forcibly detained against their will even if
this is a short distance and small period of time.
Stranger Danger
It is very difficult for a child to grasp what a stranger is. YourChilds definition of a stranger is the only one that matters.
Every day is a learning opportunity for children, explaining why
one person is not a stranger and why another person is difficult
for a child to grasp. Some children wont talk to strangers, but
other kids will talk to anyone. Childrenspersonality traits and
characteristics must be considered.
We want children to understand which strangers are ok to talkto and how to identify them.
E.g.Discus with your child - if they were lost at the park that it is
they would ask for help. The most common answer is a
policeman.what if there isnt a policeman? Help your child
learn how to identify safe strangers.

help is a safer alternative than waiting on a park bench and
having the wrong type of stranger approach the child. Giving
children street smarts to handle strangers wisely and make
them aware of putting themselves in risky situations.
Predators lure younger children with animals, sweets, fun,
games and typical things.
Drill Abduction Attempt
Talk to the children about someone attempting to abduct them.
Explain a hammer fist can be used on nose or side of jaw.
Have the children strike on the pad and shout NO, STOP; GETAWAY, LEAVE ME ALONE!
Explain to the children so they realise it is important that they
act as if the situation is real. As if they are really being attacked.
Have the children demonstrate a straight back, serious face and
looking mean.
As a group, have the children shout out loud - GET AWAY!BACK OFF! STOP! NO! The one who does the best, bring them
out the front to demonstrate. Have all children try again like the
winner.

Knee Strike
Explain point toes down when striking with the knee.
Explain that the knee strike come under and up to the groin. That it can be used in close if you are grabbed. Explain that a
knee is hard for the abductor to see.
Have the children line up. Keep their hands up so elbows are
one fist from each other. Have the children strike their knee
into the pad 3 times yelling:
WHAT DO YOU WANT! BACK OFF! GO AWAY! Etc.
Then have the children run to the back of the line, fast as if
being chased.
Front Kick (Shin Style)
Have the children deliver a shin kick (like a rising kick, toes
forward) striking with the shin. Have the children practice
slowly as a group yelling WHAT DO YOU WANT! BACK OFF! GO
AWAY! LEAVE ME ALONE!
Then line them up and use focus pads to practice.
Turning Elbow strike
Explain the simplest way to use an elbow is to target the face.Explain which part of the elbow they are to strike with. (Just like
a swinging baseball bat).
Instructor Visual Technique
Demonstrate with one of the older children and use him as an example. Have them
turn their hips and follow through with the elbow. Have them strike shields or mitts
having them shout WHAT DO YOU WANT! BACK OFF! GO AWAY! LEAVE ME ALONE!Etc.

Chase them down with a Yubi stick.
Escape Techniques
Striking techniques were first to be covered because it can give
children the opportunity to distract the attacker and causeenough pain to as to release the child long enough so they can
get away.
Children who dont fight back have a lower survival rate.
Children need to actively resist an attack.
Wrist Grab Release
1. An adult (instructor) grabs the Childs (assistant) wrist. (sameside wrist grab)
2. Turn narrow part of wrist toward attackers thumb and indexfinger.
3. Child uses other hand and pulls trapped hand freeover thetop.
4. Keep hand that is being grabbed closed5.
Child pulls hand back across body.

Explain to the children they must use a distraction technique
first because an adult is to strong for the wrist release to work
on its own.
For example, while being held the child does a shin Kick (front
rising kick) to the groin, the wrist release, shouts LET ME GO!
The child then runs yelling HELP. Practice this as a group.
Front Bear Hug
Instructor Visual Technique
Instructor will demonstrate with a child. Grab child and lift off the ground. The
Childs arms will be caught inside the grab too. Instructor will lift child right up.
Explain to the child to bite to the neck, and ear and then strike
with knee to groin until they are dropped and can run and
scream for help.
Explain to the children that movement helps with all the
techniques. In this instance children should bite, wriggle and
knee while shouting.
Back Bear hug
Instructor Visual Technique
Instructor grabs child from behindallow arms to be free. Have the children
continuouslyelbowandelbowthe attacker and use hammer fistto nose and
groin. Have the children run and scream.
Take the children through the movements individually or with a
partner - elbows to the head or nose and Strike or kick to groin.

Putting it all together
Explain to the children that if someone grabs them they need to
react spontaneously and quickly. A combination of techniques
may be needed to deal with the attacker.
Explain to the children the importance of letting everyone
around them that they are in distress. That is, shouting WHAT
DO YOU WANT! BACK OFF! GO AWAY! LEAVE ME ALONE! Etc.
Explain that the confrontation is not over until the child can get
away or the attacker leaves the scene. Children who fight back
have a better chance of survival.
Instructor Visual Technique
Have the assistant wear the combat suit. Have the assistant grab each child and
hold them for 6 seconds. The child will go crazy on the attacker until released by
assistant then the child will run and yell for help.
Suit man/woman can talk to children about the power in the
suit, how it feels and how important it is to see how the
techniques work.
Drill Time (fun but serious)
Talk about regular training in NTKD and how important it is to
do regular martial arts training for self defence and fitness.
Push Children with focus pad and know them over.
Instructor Visual Technique
Instructor and assistant push kids with focus pads and knock them over. Teach the
children how to fall on mats.
Have the children attack focus pads from the ground. Have them kick to the knees,
roll and run.

The ABCs of Conflict Avoidance
A- Avoid potentially dangerous situations
- Ask kids what a potentially dangerous situation is- Give the kids with the right answer a star stampB- Be calm and breathe
- Emotion and logic dont mix. If they cant think straight theymay do something irrationally( applies for adults and
children)
- Have children breathe 10 deep breaths in nose and outmouth
CCommunicate with confidence
- Have children communicate with confidence- Explain to the children that how they respond verbally is so
important. It is not what they say - but how the say it. Toneof voice is very important. This does not mean they will not
be preyed upon, just a lot less likely.
- Have the children stand strong and say NO! BACK AWAY!LEAVE ME ALONE! With a serious tone with authority and
meaning.
- Explain it is not about winning a fight against an adult, instead STUN and RUN
D - Dontput yourself in a worse situation than you are already
in.
- Explain if an unknown adult comes up to a child they need torun right away.
EThe environment can create opportunities
- Ask the children if they know where to run to in theirneighbourhood that is a safe place for them

Ask the children what they thing G stands for.
G - Get away, whether a bully or a predator yell GET AWAY3 times
HHit hard, hit fast, hit first
Instructor talks to children about being a victim.
Explain to the children never to be passive, always fight and
dont become a victim.
Explain to the children about possessions such as lunch money,
bikes school bag and that if a bad person wants to take them its
OK. Nothing is worth more than their life.
Then explain that if they want to grab you or take you
somewhere that it is NOT OKtell children they need to fight
back, scream, run and get help. Thats what the children need
to do, itswhat your parents want you to do and itswhat the
police want you to do.
Explain to the children to never allow themselves to become a
victim. If grabbed, attack back and RUN.
SSTRANGER, STRANGER, STRANGER.
- Have children yell STRANGER, STRANGER, andSTRANGER!3 times per yell.
Children need to follow their instincts. If they feel bad about a
situation, feel threatened DANGER=RUN
Explain to the children never to allow a stranger to call them
away from their friends. An abductor wants to get them on
their own so it is easier for him to get away with them. Dont go
along with their plan. Hopefully the abductor will give up and
go away.
Remember to tell the children that most people are good. If a
bad person is attempting to grab or harm them explain to the

children not to hesitate to ask someone for help. It is very
unlikely that they will come across two bad people in a row.
Explain to the children that there are no rules if they are being
attacked. They can swear, lie, and break all the rules to get
away from danger.
Have the children practice. Scream, kick, yellget attention.
Have them yellYOURE NOT MY MUM, YOURE NOT MY DAD,
HELP! Have them scream and scream. Encourage them not to
be embarrassed Be LOUD.
The rules are all off when a child is in danger and needs to getthe attention of someone to stop the attack.
Eg If in a store and someone is trying to grab or hurt you
smash something, do anything to get attention to the bad
situation they are in. even if they make a mistake, its ok, they
wont get into trouble for it because making sure they are safe
from danger is what we want them to do.
Attackers look like a normal person, they will lie to children, trick them and even be nice to them to get what they want.
ALWAYS RUN! Get attention- get help.
If an abductor has a weapon (gun or a knife) and they tell you to
runRUN. It is very difficult to shoot a moving target and if the
have a knife they can only hurt you if they are close to you. If
there is nowhere to runhide. Hide somewhere they can not
see you. Climb a tree (a lot of bad guys wontfollow because ittakes too long or cantclimb a tree Predators dont want to get
caught). Hide in bushes, under benches, in a car, in a house,
under the sink, in a closet behind a washer or dryer. If the child
is hiding the attacker will most likely say I can see you, I know
where youreat Dontbelieve them, stay hiddenstay cool.
Hide in bushes the only way they can see you is if they have eye
contact and you can see them. Then it is time to run. It does not
matter what you do as long as you get away.

Hide and seek game
Instructors use whatever in the location to play this game. Seek
the children out.
Abduction by Car
Instructors are to talk to children about an abductor getting
them into a car. Abductors normally want to take a child to a
place where no one can see them. They will make them lie
down, on the floor of the car or in the boot. Most importantly
explain to the children that it is not over and always keep
fighting.Ask the children if they have any ideas about what they should
do.
1. If in the car leave a traila backpack, or even shoes.2. If forced into a car explain to the children to look for ways to
HURT the car. They can do this by pulling out wires, kicking
out tail lights in the boot, use a tyre wrench or tools.
3. If in passenger seat explain to the children to grab thesteering wheel and cause an accident or crash into another
car so the police are called.
4.There are no ruleskick out windows, honk the horn, pullkeys out of the ignition.
5.Kick and scream and do anything they need to do to be safe.6.Remember to explain to the children that cars need to stop
at stop signs or red lights if they dont attention will be
drawn to them.
The abductor may tell the child if they cause trouble the will
have to hurt them. The truth is when they get the child to
where they want them they are going to hurt them anyway so
dont worry about making them mad. Any thing they tell you isa lie to get you where they want you. Do whatever you have to
dofight, bite or hitits ok.

Instructor gets the children together and shows them the car.
Show the children how to push down on the accelerator and force the car into one
in front of them.
Show the children the boot of their car.
Show them the tools they can use for survival eg spare tyre, where to kick out the
light and wave.
Explain to the children that some modern cars have a safetyrelease in the boot that they can open and draw attention to
them.
Explain that even if they are tied up they can kick the tail lights
and make them fall out or blink or kick the boot to make noise
or kick the back seat to get through.
Explain to the children that they cannot be locked in a car. Theycan break anything and everything they can. Tell the children to
try and disable the car. Show the children how they can stick
anything in the ignition so the abductor cannot put in the key.
Never stop trying to get away. Never give up.
In the houseDiscuss with the children if an attacker comes into the house
get to a phone immediately and call 000. Leave the phone off
the hook and stay hidden if there is nowhere to run or no way
out. If you know a wayget out of the house and run. It is not
a Childs job to protect anything in the house.
Run to a safe neighbour. A child should know a better and
quicker way out of the house than the bad person. Instructorasks the children if they have a safe hiding place or know the
quickest way out of their house.

stand up, look at them and let them know you know he is there
and they will most likely back off. Dont be afraid of hurting
their feelingkeep you distance from him and get someone

Home Alone
Explain to the children that many abductors will know when the
children they are after are home alone. The abductors make a
point of knowing childrens schedules and routines.
Instructors can ask the children what they do when they are
home alone to ensure their safety.
Instructors can ask what they would do if someone tries to
break in.
Ask the children
- Do they have a plan if parents are not home?
