From now on universities can expect their funding to be cut, not increased. They need to disrupt
themselves, or be disrupted, to survive. The years ahead will be the worst of times for higher
eduction - but also the best.
Margaret Wente: Globe & Mail, Feb 4, 2012
And that is where many university leaders agree: If they are to weather the storm, they must face up to their weaknesses and stop spending money on them.

To be playful is not to be trivial or frivolous, or to act as though nothing of consequence will happen. On the
contrary, when we are playful with each other we relate as free persons, and the relationship is open to surprise; everything that happens is of consequence. It is, in fact,
seriousness that closes itself to consequence, for seriousness is a dread of the unpredictable outcome of open possibility. To be serious is to press for a specified
conclusion. To be playful is to allow for possibility whatever the cost to oneself.

When MIT first announced its Open Courseware (OCW) initiative in October 2002, it shook the business model of traditional higher education
institutions ... Fast-forward to October 2012: OERs have failed to significantly affect the day-to-day teaching
of the vast majority of higher education institutions.

Open tools and approaches are critical to the ability of libraries to succeed in the next
decade. Whether open source to build local expertise and capability, open data to share
findings and better society, open textbooks to reduce the cost of education, or open labs to reach out to the larger community - open will
define the 21st century library.
