We would like to thank the staff and
school community for the kind and
warm welcome we have received. It
is apparent there is a tradition of
strong parental and community sup-
port for the school and the efforts of
our teachers. We look forward to
your continued support in our efforts
to make Bliss Carman an excellent
and safe learning environment for all.
We have already had an impressive
Fall, packed with activity and accom-
plishments. Our Cross Country,
Borden ball, and Softball teams and
coaches have represented Bliss Car-
man well across the city. Students
have been involved in a Career Day
at the Science Centre, Downsview
Park for a day of fitness and our stu-
dent social justice team at the Air
Canada Centre for WE DAY. See the
details written by our student report-
ers inside.
We have recently concluded our
student council elections and
congratulations to all the elected
class representatives.
In early October we also had our
initial School Council Meeting
where Mr. Collington and Rah-
man will be our council co-chairs
this year.
The Bliss Carman Cross-Country
Team had a season to be proud
of. Over 35 runners attended
multiple practices spanning two
months. They trained, supported,
motivated, and socialized as we
ran 1.5km, 2km, and 3km routes
through the community.
On October 8th, 26 team mem-
bers participated in the East Re-
gional Qualifier races at Thom-
son Park. Battling strong winds,
each racer achieved personal
bests and enjoyed high-fiving the
“pink bunny on the bike”. Nick,
Shano, Michael, Supo, Kayla, Alex-
andra, Nivethinie, and Shabnam all
finished in the top 50 of their
races to qualify for the regional
finals on October 17th. These
athletes continued to shine at the
finals, representing Bliss with en-
thusiasm in very fast fields. Several
finished in the top half of their
races. Congratulations to Nick,
who qualified for the October
27th City Championships in Eto-
bicoke.
Thanks to all team members for your
dedication and constant smiles. Also,
a heartfelt thanks to our generous
parent drivers; and to Mr. Johnston
and Mme. Campetelli for their assis-
tance.—Mr. Kung

School Council Safe Arrival Program
Girls Slo Pitch
My First Few Weeks at Bliss The first few weeks of school
were extraordinary . From the
first day of school it was super
exciting getting to meet a lot of
nice and funny people. I also got
the teacher I wanted and my
classmates quickly became my
closest friends knowing I’d see
their smiling faces everyday at
school. Also it was cool getting
to meet the new principal and
VP, and many new students. I
know this year is going to be
filled with unforgettable memo-
ries since this is going to be the
last school year for the grade 8’s
at Bliss Carman. Just before I
finish, I found out that I am more
active in school clubs & activities
this year than last year in grade 7
because I want to make this year
the best ever at Bliss Carman Sr.

My first few

Carman were
amazing ! I
joined many
teams and
clubs such as

the 8th grade and I am in Mr.
Mohammed’s class, My class
is very crazy (in a good way). I
love chilling with my friends like
Shakopa, Tayyeeba, Geeti, Daana,
Shabnam, Efea, etc. There is
many more to come, this is just
the beginning. —Samiya A. 8C

already
knew it was going to be great. I got
such a cool teacher, and was put into
a class of cool kids. I was most excit-
ed to meet the principal, vice principal

how quickly we grew up because it
was our last year at Bliss Carman,

We are the Change…

Me To We is one of the many clubs
that Bliss Carman host. This is a
club that is familiar to many
schools, where we the students are
taught to give and help other peo-
ple in need. We are all striving to
be the next generation of
global citizens, from our
fundraisers and awareness
projects which our Me To
We club did last year and will
continue to do this year. We
were invited to the We Day
2014 concert at the Air Can-
ada Centre. At this concert
there were many inspirational
speakers and artists speaking of the
importance of helping people and
how we can make a difference in
the world, starting from our own
community.
With this thought in my mind, we started
to plan out our Me To We club. We have
many ideas such as bake sales and selling
candy grams to raise money for charities
and/or shelters. Our first event will be part
of our Bliss Carman activity day on Octo-
ber 31th in the afternoon. We will be host-
ing a haunted house for Halloween. Admis-
sion will be a non perishable food item to
participate in our scary haunted house tour.

out the school during games and
represent Bliss Carman with
pride. Game technicians are
students who help set-up home
games, referee and show their
support and spirit. Fundraisers’
job is to share creative ideas to
raise money to improve the
school. The advertisers help
spread the word by posters,
announcements, assemblies and
our website. On October 24th,
The Bliss Carman Athletic Council
is a group of dedicated students
who are determined to make spe-
cial occasions memorable. We
promote healthy living and show a
positive attitude towards athletics.
There are four subgroups through-
out the whole team: Ambassadors,
Game Technicians, Fundraisers and
Advertisers. We all have roles in
planning and arranging events.
Ambassadors guide guests through-
we will sell milkshakes to raise money for our school. Under the
guidance of Mr. Vair, we learn to work together and promote a
positive image to-
wards athletics and
health! - Laiba S. 8D

My Experience with the Gamelan Set
Playing the Gamelan set has been one of the most inter-
esting experiences I have had with musical instruments. I
find them to be very unique - they are shaped and
sound differently than most of the instruments I have
seen and heard. Compared to the flute and violin, when
I play the Gamelan set I feel a sense of growth from not
knowing how to play the instrument to quickly learning
the simple beat patterns. Learning this instrument raised
my self-confidence and I hope that the positive energy
and tranquillity that I experience is felt and enjoyed by
everyone who has, or will play the instrument. —

CHOICES for NINE: Grade 8 – 9 Transition
The goal of the “Choices for Nine” program is that every grade 8 student and
family will be equipped with the information to make an informed and confident
decision for choosing an appropriate secondary school program.
I will be hosting a grade 8-9 parent information night at Bliss Carman
Sr. PS on November 4th at 6:30pm.
Each secondary school hosts a parent information evening to help students make a
smooth transition to grade 9. The sessions provide information about key dates,
timelines, curriculum, course selection, support services, co-instructional pro-
grams, and much more. It is highly recommended that all families of grade 8 chil-
dren attend the information evenings for their child’s home school. Please refer to
the Choices for 9 brochure, TDSB website (www.tdsb.on.ca/highschool/
goingtohighschool/) or my blog (blogs.abel.yorku.ca/mjohnston/) open house dates
and time.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
