People Everywhere
Master ELL 2–1 Theme 2/Week 1
People live in different places —
In towns, in countries everywhere.
Close to us or far away,
They do the same things every day.
Morning, morning, morning,
It’s time for work or school.
Evening, evening, evening,
It’s time to eat your dinner.
Then it’s dark and nighttime,
Time to go to bed.
Say good night to everyone
And rest your sleepy head.

Moving DayHermit crabs live in shells that other
creatures don’t live in anymore. One day a
hermit crab decided to move. He had grown
too big for his old shell. He crawled along
the ocean floor, and he found many different
kinds of shells. But none of them were right.
One was too fancy and one was too plain. One
was too big and one was too small. None of
these shells fit the crab at all.
At last he found the shell he was looking for.
The crab crawled inside and felt at home. It
was just like the one he had left behind — only
it was bigger!

Me on the MapWhere do you live? How could you use a
map to find out where you live? The young girl
in this story loves maps. She has a map of her
room, her house, her street, her town, and her
state. She even has a map of her country and
the whole world. Her maps help her. She
knows how to use her maps to find her own
special place. She knows something else too.
She knows that everybody has a special place
in the world, just like her.

The KiteThere are all kinds of kites. Maybe the best
kind is the one you make yourself, or the one
your mother makes for you. This is what Mama
does in the story called The Kite. She makes a
kite for her children. They have a wonderful
time flying their kite, until the string breaks.
Then the kite flies away. That’s the bad news.
The good news is that the family finds a lost
cat. The bad news is that Mama doesn’t want
the children to take the cat home with them.
The children convince her to change her mind.
They take the cat home to stay with them.

Amazing Animals
Master ELL 6–1 Theme 6/Week 1
Animals come in so many shapes.
They really do amaze us.
Some of them are as small as grapes;
Others are bigger than a bus.
Tall giraffe and tiny ant,
Rabbit, turtle, or elephant —
Long and thin, big ears or small,
Each one is special.
We like them all!

The Sleeping PigHow do you wake up a pig? It’s not easy.
Just ask Celina. She found Mrs. Pig sleeping in
her watermelon patch. Celina tried to wake
her up but the pig was sleeping too deeply.
Along came some of Celina’s animal neighbors.
A coyote, a mule, a rabbit, and a snake all
tried to wake up Mrs. Pig. But they couldn’t.
Then a cricket came hopping along and
offered to help. He sang a very loud song.
Mrs. Pig finally woke up. After she went home,
Celina and the cricket celebrated. What did
they do to celebrate? They ate a whole
watermelon!

“Help!” yelled Bear.
“Is anybody there?
My foot is stuck in a hole!”
Squirrel was going by
And heard Bear’s cry.
She said, “I will dig and dig and dig,
Until that hole is very big.”
Soon Bear’s foot was out,
And he gave a happy shout.
Yippee!

EEK! There’s a Mousein the House
One day a little girl saw a mouse in her
house. “EEK!” she screamed. But she didn’t
run away. She brought in a cat to scare the
mouse. Oops! The cat knocked over a lamp.
So the girl sent in a dog to chase away the cat,
but the dog broke a dish. Then the little girl
tried to stop the dog with the help of a hog.
But the hog just made a bigger mess. So did
the cow, the sheep, the hen, and the horse.
The girl did not give up. She got an
elephant. The elephant made the other
animals leave — all but one, that is. “EEK!”
cried the elephant when he saw the mouse in
the house. The elephant was scared of the
tiny mouse!

Red-Eyed Tree FrogAt night, the colorful birds of the rain forest
go to sleep. But night is when the frog with red
eyes wakes up. He’s hungry after sleeping all
day. Off he goes, looking for dinner.
The frog meets an iguana, a katydid, and a
caterpillar. They are not food for the frog.
The frog cannot eat them. A snake comes up
behind the frog. The frog can’t eat the snake,
either. But that snake can eat the frog! The
snake tries to grab the frog in its strong jaws.
The frog jumps away just in time.
The frog lands on a leaf where he finds his
dinner — a fat, crunchy moth. His belly is full.
It’s time to sleep, as the sun comes up in the
rain forest.C

everything, from books and bikes to toys and
food. They even share lemonade and candy
bars. When only one candy bar is left, they
break it in two.
One day the boys see a toad by the road.
Each one wants to have the toad all to himself.
For the first time ever, they don’t agree. While
the boys get mad, the toad hops away. The
two friends blame each other. They kick stones
until their anger is gone. By the time they get

Lost! One day a bear crawled into the back of
a truck and fell asleep. When he woke up, he
was in the city. He felt lost and scared. A boy
heard the bear crying. He told the bear he
would help him find his way home.
The boy took the bear to the top of a tall
building. The bear looked through a telescope.
The telescope helped him see things that were
far away. The bear thought he saw his home.
It wasn’t his home, though. It was only a park.
Next, they went to a library. The bear
found a picture of his home. Then he used
a map to see how to get to his home. Later, a
bus took the bear and the boy to the forest. At
last the bear was home. But now the boy was
lost. His friend the bear carried him back to
the city.

If You Give a Piga Pancake
There’s just no end to what a pig will want.
A young girl finds this out when she shares her
pancake with a friendly little pig. First, the pig
wants maple syrup to pour on her pancake.
Then she wants to take a bath. Next, she
wants a toy to play with in the tub.
The girl gives the pig everything she asks
for. She lets the pig wear her special clothes.
She takes the pig’s picture and mails the
pictures to each of the pig’s friends. She even
builds a tree house! As the pig is putting up
wallpaper in the tree house, she gets sticky
from the glue. This makes her think of maple
syrup and a pancake to put the syrup on. And
then it will start all over again, won’t it?

The ForestIn this story a teacher takes her class to the
forest. The children learn about the different
kinds of trees, plants, and animals that live
there. They learn how to tell one kind of tree
from another. Pine and spruce trees have
cones with nuts. Oak trees have acorns. The
shape and color of a leaf help the children find
out what tree it is from.
The class visits other interesting parts of the
forest. They find mushrooms along a path.
They learn that trees give us wood to make
things like paper and chairs.
The children draw pictures of trees. They
plant their own trees, too. By planting trees,
the children know they are taking care of the
forest.C

ButterflyThe caterpillar grows inside a tiny egg. The
egg is smaller than a pencil point. When the
caterpillar is big enough, it breaks out of the
eggshell. The caterpillar keeps eating and
growing fatter. Its skin gets tight. It sheds this
skin as it grows a new one.
In two weeks the caterpillar has another
new skin. This skin has bright stripes. When it
is four weeks old, the caterpillar turns into a
chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis it is growing
wings.
In seven weeks the chrysalis opens. The
caterpillar has gone. It has changed into
a butterfly. Soon its wings will be strong.
It will fly from flower to flower, drinking
sweet nectar.C

Johnny AppleseedA long time ago, there lived a real person
named John Chapman. He loved to plant apple
trees. He went West with a bag of apple seeds
over his shoulder and a cooking pot on his
head. In the spring, John planted the seeds.
He hoped the apple trees would make the West
even more beautiful than it already was.
John was never alone. The animals of the
forest were his friends. So were the Indians.
When John was a lot older, he went back to
where he planted the first apple seed. Now it
was a big tree full of juicy apples. John kept
planting more seeds. People started to call him
Johnny Appleseed. Thanks to Johnny,
they had all the apples they needed.C

When I Am Old with YouThe child in this story loves to be with
Grandaddy. Grandaddy is the child’s
grandfather. The child tells Grandaddy all the
wonderful things they will do together when
they are both old. They will sit in big rocking
chairs. They will go fishing and have a picnic
lunch. They will play cards all day and forget
to keep score. They will dress up in old clothes
from the attic.
There’s no end to what Grandaddy and the
child will do. When the child is old too, they will
drive to the ocean and toss stones at the
waves. They will take long walks and say hello
to all their friends. Then, at the end of their
walk, they will sit side by side in those big
rocking chairs.

You and Me
Master ELL 9–7 Theme 9/Week 3
I’m glad we’re free —
You to be you,
Me to be me.
You like to climb and run.
I like to read for fun.
You like to ride your bike.
I like to walk or hike.
I’m glad we’re free
To be as happy as we can be!

ELL 9–8 Selection Summary Grade 1 Theme 9: Special Friends
Master ELL 9–8 Theme 9/Week 3
The Surprise FamilyOne day an egg hatched. Out came a baby
chick. She saw a boy and thought that he must
be her mother. She followed him everywhere.
The boy taught the chick how to find food and
how to stay safe.
That chick became a little hen. She
dreamed of having her own family. The boy
found her a handful of eggs. She sat on them
until they hatched. The babies followed her
everywhere. She taught them how to find food
and how to stay safe.
But there was something different about the
hen’s babies. They had flat beaks and webbed
feet. They loved the water. They didn’t look
like baby chicks at all. In fact, they were
ducklings that grew into big white ducks.
What a family they became — the hen,
the ducks, and the boy.

A Challenge
Master ELL 10–1 Theme 10/Week 1
They think I can’t do it.
They think I can’t sit still.
But I’ll show them.
I will. I will!
My plan is kind of silly.
It may make you giggle.
I’ll pretend I’m a statue
That just CAN’T wiggle!

Two Greedy BearsTwo bear cubs took a walk. They drank
some water from a brook. They argued about
who drank more. Then they argued about who
had a bigger stomach ache.
The next day the cubs found some cheese.
They didn’t know how to share it. Soon they
got into a fight. Along came a tricky fox. She
broke the cheese into two parts. But one part
was bigger than the other. The bears wanted
the parts to be the same size.
The fox took a bite of the bigger piece.
Now the other part was bigger! So the fox
kept taking bites. When the fox was full, she
walked away. The crumbs she left were the
same size. They were too small to make a meal
for the bears. But now the pieces were equal! C

Oops! I Forgot
Master ELL 10–4 Theme 10/Week 2
Friends are coming for dinner.
Oops! I forgot.
A little of this and a little of that
Is all the food I’ve got.
I’ll cook some ham
And add some peas.
Then I’ll put in some noodles
And sprinkle on cheese.
Now there’s plenty for dinner!

Fireflies for NathanNathan is six. One summer day he visits his
grandparents. They live in the country. When
Nathan’s father was a boy, he loved to catch
fireflies and put them in a jar. Nathan’s
grandmother still has that jar.
Nathan wants to catch fireflies too. He
can’t see them until it gets dark. They sparkle
and shine. His grandfather teaches him how to
drop the fireflies into the jar. When the jar is
full, it looks like a bright lantern.
Nathan puts the jar beside his bed. He
asks his grandparents to let the fireflies go
free after he falls asleep. They smile because
that’s what Nathan’s father used to say when
he was six.C

Good Luck!
Master ELL 10–7 Theme 10/Week 3
“Stop!” said a purple cat
To a frog passing by.
“Let’s chat.”
“I can’t,” said the frog.
“I’m in a race
Against a hippo with a polka dot face.”
“Good luck!” said the cat.
And that was that.

The HatFrog and Toad were good friends. Frog
gave Toad a hat for his birthday. But the hat
was too big. It covered Toad’s eyes. Poor
Toad! He tripped and fell and bumped his
head.
Frog knew how to help. He told Toad to
think big thoughts when he went to bed. Frog
said this would make Toad’s head grow larger.
Then the hat would fit.
So Toad did just that. He thought about
mountains, oak trees, and sunflowers. While
Toad slept, Frog took the hat to his house. He
made it shrink. Then he put it back in Toad’s
house. The next morning, the hat fit perfectly.
Toad was very pleased. He thought his head
really had grown bigger! C
