Our Experience Benefits Your Project ResultsPROJECT SABRE (SOURCE AREA BIOREMEDIATION), UNITED KINGDOMGeosyntecwasakeymemberofthismulti-milliondollarcollaborativeresearchproject,whichwasdesignedtodevelopanddemonstratethatenhancedanaerobicbioremediationcanresultincost-effectiveandquantifiabletreatmentofchlorinatedsolventDNAPLsourceareas.Geosyntec’sroleontheprojectincludeddesigningtheinsitutestcellandconductingbench-scalemicrocosmbatchandcolumnstudiestosupporttheprojectdesign.ThisprojectwasinstrumentalinadvancingthestateofthescienceandpracticeofDNAPLsourceareabioremediation,andhasresultedinpublicacceptanceoftheabilityofbioremediationtoeffectivelytreatDNAPLsources.FULL-SCALE BIOREMEDIATION OF PCE DNAPL SOURCE AREAS AND PLUME, SYDNEY, NSWGeosyntecdesignedandprovidedtechnicalsupportduringimplementationandoperationofapilottrialandfull-scaletreatmentofthreeseparatePCEDNAPLsourcesandthedowngradientplume(operationofthesystemwascompletedbyAECOMPtyLtd).ThebioremediationsystemsuccessfullytreatedPCEconcentrationsover100mg/L,andenhancementofdissolutionoftheDNAPLmasswasdemonstrated.Intheareaofthepilottrial,theplumedowngradientoftheDNAPLsourcereducedtonon-detectconcentrationsinlessthantwoyearsafterinitiationoftreatment.BIOREMEDIATION OF MULTI-CONTAMINANT, CHLORINATED SOLVENT PLUME IN GROUNDWATER, BOTANY, NSWGeosyntecdesignedandoversawfourpilottrialsforasiteinBotany,NSW(operationofthepilottrialswascompletedbyURSAustraliaPtyLtd),whichdemonstratedtherobustnessofEISBfortreatmentofhighconcentrationsofmixedchlorinatedsolventsinacomplexandchallengingenvironment(groundwaterpHbetween4.5to5.5,highorganiccontentsoilandthushighsorbedmass,highmassflux,heterogeneoussoilenvironment).EngineeringcontrolssuchasmixinganddilutionwereusedtoovercomeinhibitionissuesrelatedtohighconcentrationsofcertainVOCs(biodegradationwassuccessfullystimulatedatconcentrationsof1,000mg/L1,2-DCAandupto5mg/Lchloroform).Biodegradationtoinnocuousendproductswasachievedanddesorptionofmassfromthesoilwasenhanced.Estimatedmassdegradedwassomewherebetween3,800to11,000kgoftotalVOCmassbiodegradedoveran18monthperiod,atratesofupto60kg/day.Concentrationreductionsofupto99%ofinfluentconcentrationswereseenandcontaminantdegradationhalf-livesontheorderofhourstodayswereachieved.AlsodemonstratedwastheabilitytoreversetheinhibitoryeffectofhighDCAconcentrationsandstimulategrowthofnaturalmicrobialcommunitiesinpreviouslyinhibitoryenvironments.ELECTROKINETICALLY-ENHANCED BIOREMEDIATION OF A PCE SOURCE ZONE AT A FORMER INDUSTRIAL FACILITY, DENMARKElectrokinetically-enhancedbioremediationwasdemonstratedinaPCEsourcezonelocatedwithinaclaytillataformerindustrialsiteinDenmark.Thepilottestsuccessfullyconfirmedthepositivebench-scaletestingresults,testedtheengineeringdesignoftheelectrodesandelectrondonorrecirculationanddeliverysystems,measuredsite-specificelectrondonormigrationrates,andconfirmedthattheappliedvoltagefielddidnotadverselyimpactmicrobialgrowthandactivity.Migrationoftheelectrondonorfrominjectionpointstoallmonitoringwellswasobservedwithindaysasaresultofapplicationoftheelectricalfield.Rapidincreasesindaughterproductconcentrationswasobservedasaresultoftheenhancedelectrondonordistribution.Etheneformationwasobservedinpostapplicationmonitoring,indicatingmicrobialactivitywasnotadverselyimpactedandthedistributionoftheaugmentedculturewasenhancedbytheapplicationoftheelectricalfield.BIOREMEDIATION OF ENERGETIC CONSTITUENTS INCLUDING PERCHLORATE AND NITROAROMATICSBeginningin1999,Geosyntechaspioneeredthedevelopment,demonstration,andvalidationofbioremediationasacost-effectiveremediationtechnologyfortreatmentofenergeticconstituentsincludingperchlorateandnitroaromatics.Geosyntecwasthefirsttodemonstratetheuseofbioremediationtechniquestotreatperchlorate-impactedsoilsandgroundwaterinsitu.Todate,GeosyntechascompletedfieldapplicationsatdozensofsitesandwasawardedtheprestigiousProjectoftheYearawardfromtheStrategicEnvironmentalResearch&DevelopmentProgram(SERDP)operatedbytheUnitedStatesDepartmentofDefenseforitsresearchanddevelopmentefforts.
