Increase confidence of the FPIsDear Sir, as you may know, our countryis undergoing a crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is imperative to bring thesituation under control but it is equallyimportant to focus on the recession rateof our country. According to statisticalresearch, the economic situation may de-grade as low as that of the year 2008, ow-ing to the effect of demonetisation, rollout of GST and most importantly the glob-al slowdown. We could look at some im-mediate short-term measures like revok-ing the recent increase in taxes for highincome. This may also repair confidenceamong FPI’s in the Indian markets.

Reducing SLR could workSir, here are a few measures: ➤ By taking back the idea that all listed

companies must have 35% publicshareholding.

➤ By reducing statutory liquidity ratio(SLR is the minimum percentage of

deposits that a commercial bank hasto maintain in the form of liquid cash, gold or other securities) and give di-rections to State Bank of India to lendinstead of buying more securities.

➤ By lowering bank reserve limits.➤ By open market operations.➤ By quantitative easing.

➤ By cutting tax rates.➤ Being flexbile with labours and em-

ployees provident fund (EPF) re-quirements for micro, small and medi-um enterprises (MSME’s).

Focus on MSME is importantUNCTAD has recently released a reportstating that world economy will go in re-cession with likely exception of India and

China. Nonetheless, it is estimated that21-day lockdown will result in GDP lossof almost $98 billion. To save our econo-my, government could focus on increas-ing domestic consumption. In order to dothis the government should provide con-trolled and transparent financial boosterto MSME sector. It contributes around

33.4% of India’s output. MSME hasthe potential to grow.

HOW: Along with thepay cut of law-

makers, the President, VicePresident and the Gover-nors of the states have also

taken a pay cut to a sim-ilar extent. In the 2018

budget, the salariesof the President, Vice

President, state governorsand Lt governors were in-creased with retrospectiveeffect from February 2016.

WHAT: An ordi-nance was

passed by the Union cabinetto cut the salaries and al-lowances of MPs — plustheir pensions — by 30% fora period of one year start-ing April 1, 2020. Theamount will be depositedinto the Consolidated Fundof India and utilised to tack-le Covid-19. The pay cut willalso include the PM’s andhis cabinet's salary.

After months of insisting that masksaren’t necessary unless you’re unwell, health agenciesacross the globe are now encouraging mask-wearing foreveryone. And the move appears to be backed byresearch that suggests masks, even homemade facecovers, can be effective in protecting against Covid-19. BRUCE LEE
