Let’sstartwithafewdefinitionsthatwillhelpyouasyoureadthisguide.Youwill see thewords“makeup”and“cosmetics”usedsomewhatinterchangeably,asbothareusedtodescribethemakeupartist’stoolsofthetrade.Theterm“cosmetics”appliestoabroaderrangeofbeautyproductsappliedtotheface,hair,hands,andbody,while“makeup”isspecifictoproductsappliedtotheface.
Makeupproductsincludefoundation,concealer,blush,lipstick,lipgloss,lipliner,eyeliner,eyebrowpencils,eyeshadow,andfinishingpowder.Certaintypesofmakeupartistry,suchasspecialeffectsortheater,includeabroaderrangeofproductsthanthese,andwillbereferredtoas“specialeffectsmakeup”or“stagemakeup”.
Someothertypesofmakeupapplicationinclude“straightmakeup”,whichismakeupforactors,models,celebrities,etc.thatissupposedtolooklikeeverydaywear—orperhapsslightlymoreglamorousorhandsome.Straightmakeupismeanttoenhancetheactor’slooks,butnottomakehimlookotherwisedifferent,thoughitcouldbeusedtoslightlyaltertheshapeofhisface,forexample,tomakehimlookmoreattractive.
“Charactermakeup”isusedinTV,film,videoandtheaterworktomakeactorslooklikethecharactertheyaretryingtoportray—older,younger,downtrodden,orevenlikeanotherspecies.Charactermakeuptakesadvantageofallthetricksinamakeupartist’sbag,fromfalsehairusedtocreatebeards,toextravagantmakeupeffectstocreategoryandfrighteninginjuries.
