Good Shooters Are Made
“Practice Doesn’t Make Perfect …
Only Perfect Practice Makes Perfect”
Ball Size
• Start with the correct ball size
• Women’s basketballs are 28.5” in diameter
Hand Position
• Place your Shooting Hand in the center of the ball
• Place your Guide Hand to the side of the ball
Balance
• Start with a Balanced Base
• Feet should be shoulder width and pointing towards the basket
• Your shoulders will naturally align with the basket as a result
• Weight should be on the “balls of your feet”
Power
• Shooters get power from their legs
• Imagine your legs as rockets
• Bend your knees and jump straight up!
Target
• Eyes should be locked on the part of the rim closest to you
• Your goal is to shoot the ball over the closest part of the rim
Putting It All Together!
•Follow Through - Shooting Hand Releases Straight Up to the Basket•Wrist is Bent - Fingers Are Down … “Reach Your Hand into the Basket”•Notice: Guide Hand is NOT part of the release & Eyes are Locked on the Rim!
Did You Know?
• 2 Balls can fit in the hoop at the same time!
• Shoot with enough arc (ball flight) and watch your shots start dropping!
• With the basket twice as big as the ball it’s a wonder any shots miss!
Bank Shots
• Good to Practice using the Backboard when close to the basket
• Aim for the top corner of the “square” on the side closest to you
Jumping Rope
• Jumping Rope is great for your legs and will help your Jump Shots!
Confidence
• Visualize the ball SWISHING through the hoop!
