Children Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness WeekBALLSTON SPA – Brookside, home of the Saratoga County Historical Society, announced today that local children com-pleted a craft activity celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week. Partnering with the Ballston Area Community Center and the Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center, Brookside helped BACC children create 56 origami swans that will be distributed to The Saratoga County Domestic Violence Safe House, The Vet House, and The Guardian House in Ballston Spa. This activity was inspired by Random Acts of Kindness Week, where people are encouraged to do good deeds “ran-domly.” Random Acts of Kindness Week occurs annually. Also celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week, the DVRC re-cently worked with BACC children to create a Kindness Quilt. The project was inspired by the book, “The Kindness Quilt,” by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. Over 40 children in grades K through 7th participated in the project. The Kindness Quilt is on display at Brookside Museum, accompanying the museum’s exhibition on quilts called The Threads of Time. (A)

Things To Look For On A Vehicle History ReportA vehicle history report can be a used car buyer’s best friend. Whereas in the past buyers bought used cars and hoped for the best, today’s used car buyers can rely on a vehicle history report to tell them all about the vehicle while helping buyers make more informed decisions.
When shopping for a preowned vehicle, you should always ask for a vehicle history report, regardless of whether you’re buying from a dealership or a private citizen. If the seller re-fuses, it’s time to look elsewhere. When a seller eagerly provides a vehicle history report, buyers should examine a few things on the report so they can be more comfortable should they ultimately purchase the vehicle.
* Number of previous owners: All vehicle history reports list how many owners a vehicle has had in the past. In general, the more owners a vehicle has had, the more risk you’re assum-ing as the buyer. Vehicles that tend to change hands often are less likely to have been well maintained.
In addition to how many owners a car has had, look at who those owners were. Vehicles that were once owned by a rental car company, for instance, were likely not treated very well, as few people care how much abuse their rental car endures. However, a car once owned by a rental agency likely has lots of highway miles on it, and such driving is less taxing on a vehicle than city driving where the vehicle’s engine is stopping and starting more frequently.
* Specifics: Just because a seller provides you with a vehicle history report does not neces-sarily mean that report matches up with the vehicle you might be buying. A dishonest seller might try to pass off the history report of another vehicle of the same make and model as his own. This is done to hide a suspect vehicle history or even when thieves are selling a stolen car to an unsuspecting buyer. Check the vehicle identification number, or VIN, on the vehicle to ensure the car you’re looking at matches the car on the history report. In addition, each vehicle history report describes the car, so if the description does not match you might be holding an inaccurate report.
* Location: The vehicle history report will show where the car has lived over the years. Ve-hicles that have spent ample time in harsh weather, such as Alaska or another region with a prolonged winter, have likely had their share of weather-related wear and tear, more so than a car driven in warmer climates. While this does not mean past owners didn’t properly maintain the car, some buyers might be wary of purchasing a vehicle that has endured too many harsh winters.
* Physical appearance: Does the physical appearance of the car match up with its history re-port? Sometimes a vehicle owner does not report when a car has been in an accident. Owners might do this to avoid higher insurance premiums or to mask the vehicle’s history because they intend to sell the car down the road. If a car exhibits any signs of body work that aren’t on its history report or if the car drives awkwardly but has supposedly not been in an accident, buyers should consider this a major red flag and strongly consider walking away from the vehicle and continuing their search elsewhere.
A vehicle history report can calm the fears of a buyer shopping for a preowned vehicle. But even when a report is made available, buyers should still examine the report closely to ensure the vehicle is all it’s cracked up to be.

Older Drivers Have To Reassess AbilitiesFor many older drivers, driving is more than getting from point A to point B. Getting behind the wheel allows older drivers to remain independent as well as mobile. But as a person ages, his or her risk of injury on the road increases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Older adults and their family members need to make plans for handing dwindling skills behind the wheel and the point in time when it is no longer safe for a loved one to continue driving.
In rural and suburban communities, driving is a necessity for independent living. With limited resources available for old-er individuals to get around, seniors may hold onto the no-tion of driving longer than is safe and practical. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that in 2009 alone, 5,288 people age 65 and older were killed and 187,000 were injured in traffic accidents. Older people are involved in around 15 percent of all traffic accidents in a typical year.
Getting older doesn’t mean it’s time for you or a loved one to turn in your license just yet. There are ways people can come together to make the driving experience go smoothly, and it often begins with an honest conversation.
* Let a loved one know you are on his or her side. Make sure the first topic of conversation is that it is not your intention to take away the keys of the car. Indicate that you want to work together to help keep this person behind the wheel as long as possible. Being open and honest about intentions may eliminate arguments or animosity.
* Figure out safe ways to keep your loved one driving. This may include identifying a new car with upgraded safety features, such as brighter headlights, a back-up camera and a better safety record. Enroll together in a driving safety course to brush up on driving skills.
* Go for a “test drive.” Family members can ride along with an older driver to get a better sense of his or her ability behind the wheel. If drivers have too many close calls, frequently get lost in familiar places, exhibit slower response times or are easily distracted, this should be a wake-up call and the loved one should intervene.
* Schedule a vision and hearing exam. Driving abilities can be affected by poor vision and hearing, both common side effects of getting older. Getting a senior a new eyeglass prescrip-
tion or a better hearing aid may make all the difference in his or her driving ability.
* Review prescriptions and over-the-counter medications. Many seniors take a bevy of dif-ferent medications, and the side effects to these drugs could impact their driving abilities. If medications cause drowsiness or dizziness, speak with your loved one’s physician about a possible alternative treatment that might make driving safer.
* Be honest. If an older driver is no longer safe behind the wheel of their automobile, it is important to involve other family members and make a joint decision to remove driving privileges. Have other solutions available, such as senior busing or courtesy vans, so your loved one doesn’t feel he or she will be confined to the house.
Driving is a sensitive subject for older driv-ers who see being able to get behind the wheel as an opportunity to maintain their independence. But individuals need to be honest with themselves to remain safe on the road.

Things To Know About Motor Oil When it comes to taking care of their vehicles, many motorists prefer to be overly cautious. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, there are times when being too cau-tious can unnecessarily cost you money.
Motor oil, and when to change that oil, has long been a point of contention. Many driv-ers grew up being told that motor oil should be changed every 3,000 miles. However, that myth has been debunked for many of today’s vehicles, which should come with sug-gested intervals between oil changes. According to Ed-munds.com, in 2010 the av-erage interval for oil changes was 7,800 miles. In addition to changing a car’s motor oil less frequently, there are other things drivers should know about motor oil.
* Oil does not necessarily need to be changed before a long trip. Taking a trip? While it’s good to have your car examined before embarking, if the recommended oil change interval is not up, then you do not need to preemptively change your oil. Such a change is likely unnecessary and will not improve the performance of your vehicle during the trip.
* Black oil does not necessitate a change. Conventional wisdom once suggested if the oil on the dipstick is black then it needs to be changed. But nowadays automotive professionals are noting that black oil is doing its job and different additives might be changing the oil’s color, which means the oil doesn’t need to be changed.
* You can use petroleum-based oil after using synthetic. Another longstanding myth regard-ing motor oil was that once you use a synthetic motor oil instead of a petroleum-based oil you have to continue using synthetic oil, which is often more expensive than more traditional mo-tor oil, in order to avoid harming the vehicle. However, automotive professionals have noted that these two types of oils are now often blended, meaning switching back and forth from one to the other is not likely to cause any damage to your vehicle. Just be sure to use motor oil that meets the standards set forth in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
* Consider an earlier oil change after buying a new vehicle. Sometimes a new vehicle will need an oil change after its first 3,000 miles. However, this does not mean your vehicle will need one every 3,000 miles. According to Blackstone Laboratories, who study motor oil, oil samples taken from engines during their initial 3,000 miles of driving had elevated metal levels from the camshafts and pistons. These elevated levels will not necessarily be harmful, but some auto manufacturers recommend a shorter initial interval just to be safe. Honda, how-ever, includes an anti-wear additive in their break-in oil and advises against changing their oil early. Consult your owner’s manual to determine if it’s best to change your oil after the initial 3,000 miles or to let it go until the recommended interval.

Bulldog Mix Pups
This is one of Doc's companions that we took in. He is a little confused as to what happened to him but he is safe
and warm. He is up to date on shots and will be neutered next week so he will be
ready for his forever home.
Doc8 year old, pure breed Beagle. Neutered, up
to date on shots. Poor Doc! He's got quite the story to tell. He was put on Craig's list(We
hate Craig's list) because his owners wanted a smaller dog and he was too big, at 30 lbs. So they gave him away at the tender young age of seven, to a nineteen year o...ld with no stability in his life. Last week the nineteen year old was
evicted with Doc and four cats. We took in Doc and two of the cats and another rescue

gentlemen. He is a little sad and all he wants is a family with kids, other animals and a place to call home till the end of his days. He is a purebred beagle, a little chubby, up to
date on vaccines and neutered. He is the sweetest boy ever.

For more adoptable pets and online adoption applications, please visit H.O.P.E. online at
www.hopeanimalrescue.org. The cat adoption center, The Annex, in Clifton Park Center Mall
needs good caring volunteers to assist in adoptions. If you love cats and would like to
help them find their perfect forever homes, this would be for you! For information about The
Annex, please call Leta @ #518.885.4113
Daphne is a 1-year old Jack Russell Terrier. She is a sweet girl about 20 pounds and is wiggly and friendly! The veterinarian's office she came from said she doesn't seem especially fond of men, and we haven't had a chance to assess her with dogs. Daphne does not get along with cats at all. She
needs to be in a cat free home!
Teddy is a terrier, possibly mixed with lab, who weighs about 25 pounds. He’s a great dog, good with kids and other dogs, but not cats. Teddy is housebroken and loves to play and have all your
attention! Don't you just love those ears?!
Nina is a nice girl! You can meet Nina at The Annex in Clifton Park Center Mall or, for more
information, please call 518.469.6824 or 518.932.9155.
Mittie is a quiet, sweet shy guy who is 2-3 years old. His owner passed away and he is very timid now that he doesn’t have a home. He does fine
with other animals, although we do think a quiet home would be best for him. He warms up and is a real sweetheart when you spend the time to coax him out of his shell. He is currently at The Annex
in Clifton Park Center Mall.

Stars for Our TroopsCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots or-ganization that is growing fast across the USA. We take re-tired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More informa-tion can be found at www.StarsForOurTroops.org or contacting [email protected]. (A)

March 2013 will be the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq and there has been no regional parade to mark the service and sacrifice of this new generation of veterans. The Malta Veterans Committee has proposed a tribute parade to focus on this generation, while still acknowledging all previous ones. The committee intends to release more information in the weeks ahead. Did You Know? There are different times in a driver’s life when he or she may have to pull over on the side of the road. Whether a flat tire has derailed the trip, the driver or a passenger is experiencing motion sickness or you find the car isn’t per-forming correctly and it war-rants a look under the hood, pulling over on the shoulder may be necessary.
It can be difficult to pull over smoothly and safely on a busy highway, especially when you are in a stressful situa-tion, such as a mechanical emergency. But it is in your best interest to remain calm and follow a few procedures. First, slow down and put on your right-turn signal to in-dicate you will need to move into the right lane. Some peo-ple prefer to put their four-
way-flashers on after they have successfully cleared the lanes and are ready to navi-gate onto the shoulder. Try to select a spot where you are not on a bend or where there is poor visibility or your vehicle cannot be seen by other driv-ers on the highway. You do not want to be injured while exiting or attempting to work on the pulled-over vehicle. Drivers should keep an emer-gency roadside assistance preparedness kit containing flares, emergency triangles or cones, a flashlight, batter-ies, a poncho, booster cables, duct tape, a utility knife, cord, a blanket, and first aid sup-plies in the car as a precau-tion. Each item serves its own
unique purpose.
The Canadian Automobile Association recommends staying inside the vehicle, es-pecially on a busy road. Tow trucks and police vehicles typically cruise busy stretches of road and help may arrive in a matter of minutes. Those who have a roadside assis-
tance plan membership can use a cell phone to make a call for help. It is best to wait in the car until a tow truck or police arrive.

There’s Plenty To Do In Springtime Around Here
As April heats up, and the snow finally is gone for good, we can emerge from our winter slumber to plant the garden, clean the yard, or put the boat in the water, just for starters. Interesting events are going on too – for example SAGE Science and Health Discovery Night at Shenendehowa High School East is April 19 from 6:30-9:00PM, with over 75 hands on science and technology exhibits. The Chamber will be there with our Historic Lock 19 display and demonstration of how an Erie Canal lock operates.Speaking of the canal, the statewide Canal Clean Sweep is April 20, and the Chamber work party is meeting at the end of Ferry Drive at 8:45AM. Many readers have come for-ward expressing interest in volunteering for this and other community develop-ment projects this year. If you’re available and would like to share in this unique experience of preserving a historic treasure please drop me a line at [email protected] .Also in late April, the Not So Common Players is presenting “Bingo, the Winning Mu-sical”, at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library. Admission is free, so visit www.notsocommonplayers.org for dates and details. For runners/walkers, LifeSong, Inc. (www.lifesonginc.org) is hosting its first-ever Daffodil Dash 5k at the Halfmoon Town Park on May 18.
For business owners seeking display opportunities, several upcoming events are looking to sign up vendors. Wa-terford’s RiverSpark Canal Festival is set for May 11. The Chamber is hosting the Retire Right Expo (for 50+ and those who love them) at the Desmond in Albany on May 22, while the Town of Ballston is celebrating 225 years on July 13 with a town-wide celebration. Also on that date, the Mohawk Gateway Canal Fest will take place at the Capital Region Maritime Center in Alplaus. To exhibit at these great events, contact me at the email above, or call 518-371-7748.
