BA (Hons) Applied Accounting

Module Title Module Description

Level 1

The Organisational EnvironmentThis module will introduce the student to businessstructure and purpose. It will look at structuregovernance and ethics. It will develop knowledgeand understanding of the business environment andthe influences these have on organisations and keypersonnel within the business.

Applied Financial AccountingThis module will introduce the underlying principles,concepts and regulations relating to financial

accounting in an international context. This willenable the student to understand the context,purpose and qualitative aspects of financialinformation. It will introduce the tools necessary forthe student to become technically proficient in theuse of double-entry accounting techniques and thepreparation of basic financial statements for soletraders, partnerships and incorporated entities.

Business Planning and DecisionMaking

This module is an introduction to the discipline ofmanagement accounting. The module aims todevelop a knowledge and understanding of how toprepare and process basic cost and quantitativeinformation to aid management in planning,

controlling and decision-making. These skills can beused in a variety of business contexts.

Corporate and Business LawThis module is designed to introduce the student tothe English legal system and sources of law. Inparticular it will study those areas which underpin theday-to-day business transactions. This will includethe law of obligations including contract and tort,employment law and human rights legislationIt will then develop a detailed knowledge of companylaw so that a student will be able to understand theframework for the formation and constitution ofcompanies and the legal requirements for theirsuccessful management.

Level 2

TaxationThis module is designed to understand the rationaleand functions of the UK tax system.It will then focus on the rules of income tax,corporation tax, capital gains tax, national insuranceand VAT. This will enable the student at the end ofthe module to prepare detailed computations for acorporate body with subsidiaries and individuals.

Performance ManagementThe module focuses on strengthening abilities inapplying and analysing management accountingtechniques. There will be a study of both qualitativeand quantitative information. This information will beapplied to the management tasks of planning,decision-making, performance evaluation and

control.Financial Reporting

This module aims to develop the knowledge andskills required to understand and apply accountingstandards in the preparation of financial statementsof entities. The module will commence with aconsideration of conceptual frameworks for financialreporting. The required accounting treatment forspecific items appearing in financial statements willfollow. The preparation of group financial statementswill be covered. Analysis and interpretation offinancial statements concludes the module.

Audit and AssuranceThe module focuses on areas related to theperformance of an audit of financial statements. Thisbegins with a consideration of planning and riskassessment, including in particular, the identificationand evaluation of internal controls. Following fromthis, the sources, rationale and process for collectingvarious types of audit evidence are studied beforemoving on to consider issues in relation to a reviewof financial statements. Finally, the module coversthe area of audit reporting by both internal andexternal auditors.

Level 3

Applied Financial ManagementThe focus of the module is the three fundamentalfinancial management decisions of investing,financing and dividend policy. Investing decisions are

considered firstly in terms of long-term investmentappraisal and secondly in terms of controlling theinvestment in working capital. Financing decisionsare considered from the point of view of both therecipient and the provider of finance. From therecipients viewpoint there is a study of the sources ofbusiness finance, the cost of this finance and otherfactors which affect the type of finance selected to beused by a business. From the providers viewpointthere is a study of the models used to value bothequity and debt finance including a consideration ofpossible methods used for the valuation of abusiness.

Corporate Reporting The module considers financial reporting issues ingreater depth than previous modules. Generallyaccepted accounting practice and standards areexamined in detail. This forms the basis for thepreparation of complex group financial reports anddealing with more complex areas of reporting suchas financial instruments, foreign currencytransactions and share based payment. There is afocus on the role of the accountant in measuring and

evaluating financial performance. Finally, there is anevaluation of current developments in financialreporting and their implications.

Corporate Governance and EthicsThis module will provide students with a developedunderstanding of corporate governance, building onearlier modules and explain the function of corporate

governance in effective management and control oforganisations and resources. It will also evaluate therole of accountants in controlling and mitigating risk.Issues will be considered in an international context.

Integrated Case StudyThe Major Project module (integrated case study)allows students to engage in a substantial piece ofindividual research work based on a real world casestudy. From a core base of information on theorganisation, the individual will need to design andcomplete research around the core subject.
