Welcome The Cleantech Open Competition is a hunt for the most promising clean technology innovation anywhere in the world. One national winner from each country will then compete, in November each year, against the winners from other countries at the global finals in California.

As a key initiative of the Clean Technologies Supplier Advocate industry development strategy, the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE) is funding the Australian competition, as part of this global event. DIISRTE has commissioned Australian CleanTech to manage the competition and has worked closely with the Competition Partners to deliver the greatest value for the Australian cleantech sector.

The Competition was launched by the Hon Mark Dreyfus QC MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Industry and Innovation, in May 2012. In July, we announced the 30 Semi Finalists that had qualified for the two months of intensive business mentoring to develop their business plans and growth strategies. Our aim was to help as many as possible of these companies to succeed and grow into global leaders in their field of clean technology.

In September, we announced the seven Finalists for the Australian competition. The Australian Winner will be announced at the Awards dinner at the Melbourne Aquarium on 4th October by the Parliamentary Secretary. The Winner will compete in the global Cleantech Open finals in November in California.

Many of these outstanding companies are presenting and exhibiting at this FutureBuild conference. The seminar also features leading cleantech venture capital investors from China, Korea and Australia, all looking for the best technologies that they can back and take to the world. The Finalists will be travelling to California in November to further grow their businesses.

I would like to thank the Competition Partners, Mentors and Judges for their generous donation of time, skill and effort - your input has helped many of the companies make significant progress. I also thank you for your time in visiting the exhibition, listening to the seminar or coming along to the dinner. The ultimate success of cleantech companies will only occur with engagement across the wider community and we ask that you act as ambassadors for the industry and tell people of the great companies that you have seen today.

VR TEK GLOBAL

CAPABILITIES

VR TEK Global manufactures ‘virtual rubber’ by producing high quality devulcanised and activated rubber powders (DARP) from reclaimed rubber of tyres and other end-of-life rubber products via our high-tech clean-tech recycling technologies.

DARP becomes a high value partial natural rubber substitute ingredient for manufacturers of high end products in the areas of rubber, plastics, elastomers and composite materials manufacturing.

VR TEK Global is addressing the current legislation in Victoria which bans the dumping or burning of tyres under the Environmental Protection Act.

DISCRIMINATORS

In 2011, 1.5 billion tyres were produced globally. During the average life a tyre, only 15% of the rubber is worn out, leaving the rest of the rubber as scrap.

VR TEK Global’s innovative recycling solution has the potential to significantly reduce the global scrap rubber problem as well as the demand for natural rubber.

The devulcanisation process uses an energy efficient mechanical method rather than utilising chemicals.

The activation process creates useful molecular functional groups without harmful emissions and enables the powders to rebind with themselves and with other materials.

KEY CUSTOMERS

Manufacturers of rubber, plastics, elastomers, and composite material products have tested samples of VR TEK Global’s DARP produced at our pilot facility at the Geelong Technology Precinct, Victoria with very positive feedback.

VR TEK Global is now in the process of starting to supply these prospective customers with DARP.

Thus potential customers range from bitumen asphalt modifiers for road construction, to bulk rubber product manufacturers including conveyor belt and mining dump truck tray cover producers.
