Message from the Principal
Dear Mariposa Elementary School Families,
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at Mariposa Elementary School. I am excited and honored to be a part of the Mariposa community for this upcoming school year! We will be starting this school year in one of the most unique and challenging ways imaginable for our staff, families, and students. This year will look differently from any other school year any of us have experienced and there will be a lot of questions and uncertainty. We will work through this and although I may not have the answers to all of the uncertainties; there are a few things that I do know as we begin the journey that is the 2020 – 2021 school year.
• The ENTIRE Mariposa staff is committed to do the BEST they can each day for your student.
• ALL of our teachers will work tirelessly to ensure the success of all our students each day.
• Our number one priority continues to be the safety of each one of our students.
• WE will get through this together as a community.
We have always encouraged parents to be energetic participants in their child’s learning, however this year it is vital to be engaged in your child’s learning. The more you can work with your student and have conversations with them about their learning, the more your student will get from this experience. I do want to encourage you to keep conversations and interactions with your student about the current situation positive and solution oriented. While we totally understand the frustration and concern you may have, our students take their cues from the adults in their lives. Let’s make this an opportunity to promote the growth mindset of flexible thinking and a willingness to view challenges as opportunities for growth.
We are truly a community here at Mariposa, and this is the time to show how important the home, school, and community connection is. It is truly the collective effort between the Mariposa staff and our families that ensures the success of all our students, so please be as positively engaged as you can with your child this year!
Please check the Mariposa or RUSD website periodically for the most up to date information regarding the status of Distance Learning and any other important updates. We will continue to work through our current situation and when safety allows for our students to come back to campus, we will be ready to welcome them back.
If you ever have a concern about something or questions regarding a specific situation or procedure, please do not hesitate to contact me. The best way is to email me at [email protected] or call me at 909 794-8620.
Sincerely,
Dustin Hackney,
Principal

WELCOME TO OUR 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR!!!
Hello Mariposa families! Welcome to the Mariposa 2020-2021 school year. To all of our new families, my name is Briana Flanigan and I will be serving as our PTA president for this upcoming year. My husband, Danny, and I have three children: Connor, Ryleigh, and Tatum. Our oldest, Connor, will be starting 6th grade, Ryleigh is going into the 5th grade, and our youngest, Tatum, is in pre-school. We have been blessed to call Mariposa our kids’ school and our home away from home the past 6 years and are thankful for the teachers and staff who love our kids and are dedicated to their education, safety, and well-being. Our Mariposa PTA is made up of parents, extended family members, teachers, and staff. We work together to help provide our students with the best tools for their education, experiences to learn from, and memories to last a lifetime by coming alongside the staff and teachers in support. We welcome new faces and new ideas, especially this year! It will be more important than ever to make sure you are staying connected. Make sure you keep an eye out for flyers and announcements that will be posted on our school website and our Facebook yearbook page. Also, make sure to download the PeachJar app so that you don’t miss a thing. This is where I would normally tell you about all the fun exciting ways you can get involved and volunteer at our wonderful school, but in these uncertain times the one thing I know is that things are going to look much different this year. Mariposa’s exceptional reputation has been strengthened by volunteerism, traditions, and the fun events put on by the PTA. While this year may look different, my goal is to come together as a PTA to find ways to bring as much normalcy to our kids as possible. Now more than ever our PTA will need the help and support from our families in making this a fun and memorable year for our students. It is going to take a whole lot of creativity and thinking outside the box to support our kids and their teachers, but if we work together I am sure we can find a way to make this year just as amazing as past years. I personally invite and encourage you to join our PTA meetings. For now, they will be held virtually as Zoom meetings until we can meet again in person. Our meetings are typically held one Thursday a month at 1:00 pm. However, with distance learning taking place during that time right now our time will change to accommodate the support our children will need from us. Just as we did last year, there will be a couple evening meetings throughout the year to accommodate different schedules and allow all who want to participate a chance to do so. Any and all of our meetings are great opportunities to hear what our many PTA committees are working on. While coming to meetings is not mandatory to being on the PTA, it is a great place to have a voice at our school and get involved. We are a fun group of parents who share the same goal: bettering the lives of our children and their community.
Come join us! I am open to any questions and/or suggestions and look forward to hopefully working with you this year.

Meet our New Staff Members
Josephine Corpus joins our 4th grade team. She says she knew
she wanted to work with children from a very young age. Origi-
nally, she thought she wanted to be a dentist, but after taking a
Psychology and Education course her junior year at UCLA, she
decided to become a teacher. After graduating from UCLA, she
worked as a substitute teacher at Val Verde School District.
Some of her interests include mindfulness and yoga. She also en-
joys traveling and exploring different places in California. Her
favorite location by far is San Diego. She is a big foodie and
loves to try different foods. Her goal this year is to thrive dur-
ing this distance learning period.
Abby Moore completes the 4th grade team. She states she
“loves working with kids...they bring light to all our lives!” While
this is her first year of teaching, she comes well prepared with
a Masters in Learning and Teaching from the University of Red-
lands and having completed her student teacher with Mrs. Sapp
last year. She loves staying active, cooking, binge watching Net-
flix and new music. Pre-Covid she loved going to concerts and
looks forward to seeing live music again.
Megan Scanlon is our new 5th grade teacher. She got into
teaching because she “had great teachers who really made a
difference in my life. Her previous experience in education was
teaching Middle School in Pennsylvania. Some of her hobbies
are reading, traveling, and playing music. Her goal for this
year? To learn Spanish!

Carolyn Raleigh is joining us at Mariposa as the Art Enrichment
teacher. She loves being creative and encouraging others to
find new ways to use their creativity. While this is her second
year teaching art enrichment at RUSD, she has been in educa-
tion for years, running Outdoor Science Camps for 4th and 5th
graders; teaching STEM classes such as robotics, Cybersecurity
and animation. Her hobbies include a love of the outdoors, play-
ing with her dog and reading. Her goal this year is to complete
her sketchbook that will become part of the Brooklyn Art Li-
brary’s “Sketchbook Project.” She looks forward to joining us
at Mariposa.
Jessica Ng comes to Mariposa from a business background,
where she says she “quickly realized I had a passion for working
with kids and wanted to be an elementary school teacher.” She
will be teaching 4th grade at Mariposa, recently completing her
student teaching last spring. She likes to hike, do yoga, binge
watch Netflix and check out new food places. Her goal for this
coming year is to bring learning and joy to her students. She
“can’t wait to start teaching and working with everyone at Mari-
posa.”
Elena Mejico-Dixon: While Ms. Mejico-Dixon isn’t actually new
this year (she started with us last year) we did not get a chance
to introduce her properly This is her 13th year teaching and her
7th year in Redlands Unified. She switched from general educa-
tion to music education so “that I can reach children through mu-
sic” . Ms. Mejico-Dixon graduated from the University of Red-
lands where she double majored in liberal studies and music. Her
hobbies are singing, running, and CrossFit. Her goal for this year
is to get to know the students at Mariposa better.

Don’t Forget... It’s important to remember that you are enough. That while this situation is cer-
tainly not perfect, our students will thrive because they are surrounded by a village
who loves and values them. Please be gentle with yourself. The priority
is not perfection, it is to make sure our students know they are safe and loved.

That’s the theme for the 2020-21 Reflec-tions Art Program which has been bringing the arts to life for more than 10 million stu-dents since 1969. And California State PTA and its members, families and kids are on the forefront of this amazing program, which in-creases community awareness of the im-portance of arts in education.
