The Lord’s Supper is a communion in which Christ through the Holy Spirit takes those participating up into relationship with God. In eating the bread and drinking the cup, we bring the past into the present, renewing our connections

with the Lord and one another as we wait in faith for God’s promise of perfect reconciliation. The Lord’s Supper is a sharing that reminds us of our commitments and takes us into God’s presence.

It was an ancient practice of the church for its members to share as they were able at communion, bringing bread or fruit or other items that could be shared with needy members and the larger community. In this way, through the church those in need and the surrounding community were brought before God, praying that God would also

bring them into the same communion with Christ through the Spirit. It became sharing on a spiritual and tangible basis, a sincere prayer for well-being and God’s activity.

Beginning with our keeping of the Lord’s Supper in

September, we invite you, the church, to share as

you are able bringing specific items that we know are

needed in our community. This month we invite you

to bring deodorant. You may place them on or around the table in the Princess Anne vestibule as you are coming to the sanctuary. As you are able, prepare yourself for

communion, knowing that you are in relationship with God and each other by Christ through the Spirit renewed at the Lord’s Supper, and begin praying for those in our community who need a relationship with God and who have physical need as well. May our communing with God and each other in Christ by the Spirit bless us that we might

bless others to God’s glory!

ReceptionThisSunday Church Organist, Shirley Onderdonk, will be retiring this

Sunday, after 23 years of faithful service. She has led us in worship, celebrated with us at weddings, and consoled us at

funerals with her musical giftedness as church organist since May of 1991. During that time she has also shared her gifts as bell choir conductor,

choir leader and interim music director. In celebration of her many years of faithful service, there will be a reception this Sunday, August 31st in Ferrell Hall, during the Sunday School hour. Please plan to come and express your appreciation to Shirley and her family.

Each of our worship services will include some time to honor Shirley, as well as some special music to mark the occasion. First Light will sing two of Shirley’s favorite selections at the 8:30 service. Shirley has accompanied these ladies since the formation of the ensemble more than 20 years ago.

FBC has commissioned a new piece of music in honor of Shirley’s retirement that will be presented during the 11:00 worship service. The piece is an arrangement of Thine is the Glory by G. F. Handel, which is one of Shirley’s favorite hymns. The arrangement was written by composer Dan R. Edwards, and includes the choir, handbells, and of course

the organ! Mr. Edwards and his family will be in attendance at the service to hear the premiere of the new work. While we will all miss her musical offerings in worship each week, she will continue to be active and supportive in the music ministry as opportunities arise. We extend our

heartfelt thanks to Shirley for her service and wish her much happiness in her retirement.

TheyTookHim

atHisWord A couple of Sundays ago in worship,

Larry spoke about the Restore Today, Restore Today, Restore Today, Restore Today,

Ensure Tomorrow Ensure Tomorrow Ensure Tomorrow Ensure Tomorrow campaign and

how important it is that we accomplish this work and that we pay for it without the need to borrow from the bank.

He said, “We have the money---it’s in your pockets.” And while the comment elicited some good natured chuckling from the congregation, he

was surprised and blessed at the end of the service that some listeners took him quite literally. A sixth grader came to him saying, “I made my offering in Sunday School, but you said it was in my pocket.” That young

person receives an allowance of $10 per week and without hesitation gave his full week’s allowance, handing Larry a $10 bill. In addition some Burundian men stopped Larry and said, “Here is what was in our pockets.”

These folks have truly demonstrated sacrificial giving with a generous spirit, serving as a example for all of

us. The exterior work will begin soon. Your support is needed, and appreciated.

We hope to see you and your family on Wednesday evenings beginning with dinner! Donna Morris and her friend Daw will host our meals again this year! Our schedule for Wednesday evenings will be as follows:

5:15 – 6:00 Dinner is served in Ferrell Hall (Elevator level 1) 5:55 Dismiss Preschoolers, Children and Youth to their activities

6:00 - 7:00 Children’s Music and Missions; Prayer Meeting in Ferrell Hall

6:15 Youth On Mission Together

Adult Study

6:30 Voices of Praise

Wednesdays can be a special time for folks of all ages! Make plans now to join us. Please help us plan meals for everyone by contacting the church office at 373-4402 or emailing [email protected]
