Holyhead has continously transformed its coastline:the Roman used the sea as the fourth wall of their fort,
then in the 19th century the Breakwaterallowed Holyhead to become a major harbour.
In the 20th century the continuous extensions of the Ferry Terminals has allowed millions of people to cross the sea and discover Wales territory.

Interim Proposal Presentation:
Holyhead transformed continuously its coastline. The Romans used the sea as the fourth wall of their fort. In the 19th century the construction of the Breakwater allowed Holyhead to become a major harbour. In the 20th century the continuous extensions of the Ferry Terminals allowed 2.5 Million people to cross the sea.
Therefore we want to inscribe our proposal in that tradition by establishing a new dia-logue between the town and the sea. By creating a new scenery, Holyhead will regain its waterfront.
The landmark we propose, stands in the tradition of transforming the geography and topography of Holyhead and therefore of Wales. We are not just adding an object, but creating a public space that will become a place for people to meet. It will not only change the image of the Inner Harbour Area, but also contribute to the future invest-ments.
We create a new place by introducing a completely artificial surface. Floating on top of the water it will slightly move with the waves. It will establish a new relation with the existing platforms, bridges, the train station and the future Marina. The surface emphasizes the climate as the main actor. It will reveal every condition: light, wind, rain, sun, fog

The platforms could be simple spans that bridge between floating piers and be easily perforated to allow light into

layout or measurements and can be used to replace or extend existing pontoon
systems. This seawater and acid resistant system requires no maintenance or
cleaning and is extremely durable. It can be utilised throughout the year or
the single modules can be stacked and stored.

Or the steel frame could be constructed from Corten steel for the natural rust qualities that protect the structural steel from excess corrosion. Decking of timber or perforated steel is possible fixing to the steel frame below.

GRAMINES ORNEMENTALES
Leur vogue sexplique tant par la varit de leurs formes et la diversit de leurs em-plois que parce quelles contribuent en fait pendant trois saisons au dcor du jardin. Ce sont en outre des plantes rsistantes, notamment la scheresse, et qui ont peu de ravageurs, et donc dentretien facile.
Les gramines ornementales varient en taille depuis quelques centimtres plus de deux mtres. Lherbe de la pampa est facilement reconnaissable et beaucoup de gens ont vu de petites herbes bleues dans des paysages Architecturaux. Ce que beaucoup de personnes ne savent pas, cest que les gramines peuvent appara-
tre dans des couleurs varies, brun, bleu, rouge, vert, crme, ou panaches. Par exemple, les Miscanthus ont des panachures horizontales, visibles mme par temps couvert, mais soulignes par temps ensoleill.
Ce qui donne aux gramines leur longue dure, cest que les nouvelles pousses et repousses sont belles et luxuriantes, leur aspect en t peut tre magni que, et leurs in orescences (quivalent des eurs pour les herbes) sont souvent spectaculaires et de longue dure. De nombreuses espces de Miscanthus et de Pennisetums eurissent au milieu ou en n dt, et les oraisons durent longtemps. Des Stipas eurissent au printemps, les in orescences dresses presque deux mtres au dessus des bou-quets de feuilles durent aussi longtemps jusquau coeur de lhiver.
Presque toutes les gramines ornementales sont vivaces, cest--dire quelles repoussent au printemps partir de leurs souches, emmagasinant de grandes quantits dnergie dans les racines, avant de voir dprir leurs parties ariennes lautomne ou lhiver. Un petit pourcentage dentre elles sont persistantes, et trs peu sont annuelles. Les gramines ornementales sont dsignes par leur nom de genre (taxon infrieur la famille) et despce (qui identi e la plante). Quelques unes sont de simples espces qui peuvent tre cultives partir de graines, mais la plupart sont des cultivars,

Cest un arbuste ou arbre feuillage caduque ou persistant de croissance assez rapide.Sa taille varie entre 20 cm et 5 mtres suivant les varits
Une plante de la famille des rosaces. Elle est originaire dEurope, de lhimalaya. Il en existe beaucoup de varits dont:cotoneaster lacteus: feuillage persistant vert fonc dessus, gris dessous, hauteur 3m, utilis en haie libre ou taill.cotoneaster franchetii: feuillage caduc orange rouge lautomne, baies persistantes en hiver, port retombant.cotoneaster horizontalis:petites feuilles caduques orange rouge lautomne, port tal (1 m de haut sur 2 mtres de large). Utilis sur les talus, terres-pleins, haie basse. Cotoneaster salicifolius: cotoneaster feuilles de saule
LE GENVRIER,
Le genre botanique des genvriers, nom scienti que Junipe-rus, famille des Cupressaces, comporte un grand nombre despces, des varits rigides aux aiguilles piquantes et des varits souples au feuillage en cailles.
Dorigine amricaine, asiatique et europenne, cet arbre at-teint couramment 4 15 m de haut dans la nature, et mme 25 30 m pour certaines espces. Il supporte les sols pauvres, ventuellement calcaires, sablonneux et secs, jusqu 4500 m daltitude.
Certaines espces de genvrier peuvent vivre plus de 1000 ans.
LE RAISIN DOURS
Le Raisin dours ou Busserole est un arbuste de la famille des ricaces. Souvent en forme de coussins, il a des feuilles persistantes, des petites eurs en grelot blanches ou roses et des baies rouges maturit. Cest un arbuste feuillu, ligneux, de silhouette rampante et de taille allant de 15cm 30 cm. Cest une espce colonisatrice couvre-sol. Le feuillage est simple, alterne, obovale. Les eurs sont blanche et forment au print-emps des grappes. Il pousse sur tout type de sol mme sil prfre les terrains sec, frais, acide ou neutre. Il est sensible lhumidit stagnante. De croissance trs lente, il supporte bien la taille. La plante, hermaphro-dite, est menace. Le fruit est une drupe.

Grand frne, frne feuilles aigus, quinquina dEurope, langue doiseau ;en : ash tree, de : Esche ; es : fresno, it : frassino.
Grand arbre, jusqu 40 m et 1 m de diamtre, tronc droit corce lisse et gristre, se crevassant avec lge. Feuilles opposes, composes pennes portant 7 15 folioles den-tes, couleur vert fonc. (Il existe une varit Monophylla feuilles entires ou, parfois, 3 folioles seulement). Bourgeons terminaux assez gros, de forme pyramidale, glabres, dun noir velout. Fleurs nues (sans enveloppes), insigni antes, de couleur tirant sur le rouge, elles comportent seulement deux tamines ou un stigmate bi de. In orescence en pani-cule. Floraison en avril-mai dans lhmisphre nord. Fruits : samares aplaties, indhiscentes, munies dune aile membraneuse allonge. Bois : assez dur, tenace, lastique, couleur blanc
CYPRS
Le Cyprs chauve est une essence ligneuse trs caractristique des forts qui se forment sur les substrats tourbeux, inonds et dif ciles daccs surtout dans le Sud des tats-Unis, sur le pourtour du golf du Mexique. Cette espce forme des peuplements propres, homognes, presque monotone.Elles supportent trs bien les rigueurs de lhiver europen.Les jeunes arbres ont une rami cation profonde, les vieux spcimen ne sont rami- s que dans le tiers suprieur.
les rameaux sur les jeunes branches sont dabord verts, ensuite bruns, et ils abritent des bourgeons ; les rameaux infrieurs ne sont pas trs longs, 10 cm peine ils sont dpourvus de bourgeons et deviennent caducs en automne, de mme que les feuilles.Les aiguilles sont molles et plates. Dun vert clair uni sur les deux faces, elles poussent par deux. Les aiguilles cailleuses sont disposes sur les rameaux persistants en forme dhlice. Les cnes sont sphriques, longs de 2,5 3 cm et for-ms de 10 12 bractes.Les graines sont disposes par deux derrire chaque caille.Cet arbre feuillage caduc, de 40 50 m de haut, la cime dabord troite et py-ramidale ensuite paraplodale et sphrique est une essence ligneuse exploite dans le Sud-Est des tats-Unis.

Quercus coccinea Muenchh.
GINKGO BILOBA
ou arbre aux quarante cus ou arbre aux mille cus (maidenhair tree en anglais) est la seule espce actuelle de la famille des Ginkgoaceae. On en connait sept autres espces maintenant fossiles et le Ginkgo est souvent quali de fossile vivant . Il est larbre le plus ancien sur terre puisquil est apparu il y a plus de 300 millions dannes. Il a donc ctoy
les dinosaures et a survcu tous les bouleverse-ments climatiques de notre plante.Il est originaire de Chine et a t rintroduit en Europe en 1765.Le Ginkgo est de taille moyenne, pouvant atteindre 20 35 m. Leur dure de vie est assez importante, puisque certains spcimens sont connus pour avoir plus de 2500 ans.
Ses feuilles sont uniques parmi les plantes porteuses de graines, puisque formes de deux lobes en forme de palmes. Elles atteignent de 5 15 cm de long. Le nom d arbre au mille cus lui vient de laspect de ses feuilles qui deviennent jaunes dores lautomne et for-ment comme un tapis dor ses pieds.
LIQUIDAMBAR
Liquidambar styraci ua ou copalme dAmrique, originaire de lest de lAmrique du Nord, plus particulirement de Floride, a t introduite en 1681 en Europe ou il est aujourdhui trs rpandu. Il eurit au mois de mai. Le feuillage du liquidambar, souvent confondu avec celui de lrable, est trs dcoratif et prend de belles couleurs rouge pourpre en automne.
Le liquidambar peut atteindre une trentaine de mtres de hauteur, un tronc dun mtre de diamtre la base, et une longvit de 200 300 ans.
Le liquidambar doit son nom lambre liquide quil produit. Elle contient une essence appele styrax lodeur de cannelle. Elle a t utilise pour la fabrication de baume expectorant et de chewing-gums. Au XIXe sicle, on en a extrait une molcule nomme styrne

BOULEAU ou betula pendula,
Cest lquivalent europen de notre bouleau papier. Cest le bouleau que lon retrouve le plus souvent dans nos ppinires parce quil pousse plus rapidement que nos espces indignes et quil est plus facile de reprise. Il atteint 15 mtres avec un diamtre de tronc de 50 centimtres. Il tolre bien les tailles svres et la pollution de nos villes. Le feuillage automnal est jaune. Ses racines super cielles sont gourmandes et nuisent aux arbustes plants en-dessous. Il est plus suceptible aux insectes et maladies que nos varits in-dignes.
LE FVIER DAMRIQUE ou fvrier pineux (Gleditsia triacanthos L.),
Cest un grand arbre pineux feuilles caduques originaire du Canada, appartenant au genre Gleditsia et la famille des Fa-baces, ou Lgumineuses (sous-famille des Caesalpinioideae).Floraison estivale: eurs en grappes en juin-juillet donnant une longue gousse bruntre aplatie atteignant 40cm. Fructi cation persistante. Hauteur 12 mtres, cime irrgulire tale et ar-rondie, portant un feuillage au couvert lger qui voque celui de lacacia.Le tronc et les grosses branches sont garnis dpines trs acres mesurant jusqu 30cm; il existe une varit sans pine ou inerme.
HTRE AUSTRAL ou Nothofagus antartica,
Le ire ou irre (Nothofagus antarctica), est un arbre feuilles caduques natif de la fort andine de Patagonie du sud du Chili et de l Argentine depuis la latitude 36 S jusqu la Terre de Feu. Il pousse principale-ment dans les Andes et dans lle de Terre de Feu sous des tempratures basses toute lanne, on le trouve galement en altitude
plus leve o sa cime devient rabougrie.Ces arbres at-teignent une hauteur de 10 25 m.Ses feuilles sont de forme ove, scies irrgulirement et lobes sur les bords.

You remember that bulls head I exhibited recently? Out of the handlebars and the bicycle seat I made a bulls head wich ev-erybody recognized as a bulls head. Thus a metamorphosis was completed; and now I would like to see another metamor-phosis take place in the opposite direc-tion. Suppose my bull s head is thrown on the scrap heap. Perhaps some day a fellow will come along and say : Why theres something that would come in very handy for the handlebars of my bi-cycle... and so a double metamorphosis would have been achieved.
