members also feel that they have benefited by
involving themselves in the clubs programmes.
So why not join the club and show that youtoo care for the environment? At the end of

A TRIP TO AN ORANG UTAN
REHABILITATION CENTRE
By : Najwa Farhana Baharin
Recently, I joined a trip organised by the
Love Wildlife Society in our school to the
Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre
which is located near Sandakan.
After a comfortable six-hour bus journey,
we arrived at our destination when it wasfeeding time. We saw many orang utans. They

were fed with a feast of bananas on a wide
wooden platform. There were babies as well as
old ones. They are kept at the centre until they
can take care of themselves. However, somekeep returning even after they are set free.
The orang utans are an endangered species.
Logging and open burning destroy their natural
habitat. Some are killed by falling trees while
some are trapped and sold as pets.
The trip was indeed an eye-opener and all of
us realised how important it is that we should
safeguard these primates and save them from
extinction.
LOVE OUR RIVERS
Our rivers are severely polluted. We must
do our part to reduce this problem. Do not treat
them as rubbish dumps. Dispose of your rubbish
in environment-friendly ways such as burying or
recycling. We must keep our rivers cleanbecause they are the home of all forms of
aquatic life such as fish, prawns and all kinds of
plant life.
Our rivers are the source of food and
income. If they are polluted, we will not have
adequate drinking water and those who depend

on them for their livelihood may find it difficult
to make ends meet.
Beside, they have the potential to be
developed as a tourist attraction. If our riversare dirty, it will give a poor impression to
visitors from other countries and nobody will
want to come to visit our country anymore.
It is up to each and every one of us
therefore to keep our rivers clean for our own
sake and for the sake of the generations to
come. Love our rivers

CONDITION OF THE SCHOOL LIBRARY
As a regular user of the school library, I have made the following observations of the
conditions and services provided there.1. First of all, I am unhappy with the conduct of the librarians. They are rude and
inconsiderate, and because of this many of the students have stopped frequenting the
library. This is unfortunate as many of us need to use the library for the reference
work.
2. Another complaint is that there isnt enough space for the increasing number of
students. At the moment there are only about 50 chairs and eight long tables. Moreover,
the furniture is old and uncomfortable. We feel that the library should provide us with a
more conducive environment to do our work.
3. The collection of books in the library is also insufficient for our use. The majority of
books were acquired many years ago and they are now in a deplorable state. In fact,
many of them are torn and nothing has been done about it. We would be happy if more
reference books are made available.

4. Lastly, I would like to comment on the media equipment. Although the school had
purchased some equipment for the benefit of the students, they are not functioning
well. A good example is the overhead projector which is not being used at all.
A well-managed library is very essential for the progress of the school. Our
library needs to be improved if we want to encourage more students to make full use of
it. I sincerely hope that the school would take the necessary measures to improve our
library.
Thank you.

Dear Sir,
Complaint about school canteen
I am unhappy about our school canteen.
2. The food is too salty and oily. It is bad for health. Besides, it is very expensive. A
bowl of noodles costs Rm3.00; in town, we only have to pay RM2.50 for something that is
better and more delicious.
3. The helpers do not wear caps and aprons. This is unhygienic. Furthermore, they do
not wear gloves. Instead, they handle the food with their bare hands. This is dirty and
students may end up with food poisoning.
4. The canteen is always very crowded. Many of the students do have places to sit and
eat their food. The place is also dirty. It seems that they never sweep the place and

Good morning to the principal, teachers and my
fellow-schoolmates. In conjunction with Earth
day, I have been asked to give a talk on whatevery student can do to save the environment.
The environment is everyones
responsibility. Fist, make sure that we do not
litter. We must utilise the rubbish bins
provided. Do not burn your rubbish in yourbackyard as there should be no open burning as
well.
Do not waste water. Turn off the tap; do
not let the water run. Reuse paper and plastic
bags for example we can use the paper to do our
calculations and the plastic bags to carry our
books and things to school. We should bring our
own bags when we go shopping so that we can
refuse to accept the plastic bags given. In
this way, we can reduce the use of plastic bags
which are non-biodegradable. Recycle things

Walk or cycle to cut down the use of
petrol-consuming vehicles and reduce air andnoise pollution. We can also plant flowers and
trees which will absorb carbon dioxide and
produce oxygen.
Lastly, we can organise campaigns to raise
public awareness so that more people will
contribute towards saving our environment.
To end my talk, I appeal to everyone once
again to do all we can to save the environment.
