Businesses urged to tap into the talent
pool which is offered by older workersBUSINESS leaders from a range of companies have pledged to spendthe next five years investing inmethods to tackle the challenges of demographic change.
Seventeen employers from vari-ous sectors including care, housingand finance, have signed an openletter promising ‘to help make ourageing society and economy moresustainable’.
“Without action, our ageingsociety poses a risk to the UKeconomy and our business,” theletter warned.
The employers said many compa-nies were already facing “critical”skills shortages and warned that
the problem would get worse if employers failed to implement‘age-friendly’ policies to retain andattract older workers.
The letter also recognised that ‘ahealthy workforce will be a vitalpart of addressing the UK produc-tivity puzzle as our society ages’,but said that not enough employershad invested in age-specific well-ness programmes.
Letter signatory Fiona Dunsire,UK market leader at Mercer, saidresearch had shown that onlya fraction of companies wereactively investing in and encour-aging older workers to remain inemployment.
“Reviews of pay equity acrosscomparable jobs across age bands, age discrimination checks, train-ing targeted at older workers andline manager training are still onlyoffered by a handful of employers,”she said.
“Employers need to be doingmore to develop corporate policiesthat allow their business to tap intothis talent pool.”
Baroness Sally Greengross, chief executive of ILC-UK, said employ-ers who “grasp the demographicopportunity will reap significantfinancial rewards.
“Businesses must play a sig-nificant role in helping us adaptto our ageing society. They needto create jobs for all ages, help UKplc improve its productivity andhelp people to plan better for their
retirement.”Gary Shaughnessy, chief execu-
tive of Zurich UK Life, said thatincreasing life expectancy andchronic under-saving could leavemany people facing a shortfallin retirement. He said it was upto businesses to encourage olderconsumers to stay active in theeconomy.
“The government also has arole to play by fostering a stablepensions system that incentiviseslong-term saving,” he added.
Earlier this week, a reportwarned that as the population ages, demand on adult-care serviceswould increase significantly, but
Martin Jones, chief operating of-ficer at Home Instead Senior Care,a UK national homecare providerwhich specialises in care for olderpeople, said employers were miss-ing a trick by not tapping into theolder-worker talent pool.
“We have care givers in their 50s,60s and 70s whose life experiencemakes them brilliant assets for ourbusiness which delivers relation-
ship-led homecare for the UK’sageing population,” he said.
“We simply do not see age as abarrier to a career in care with usand we provide ongoing trainingto promote personal development,no matter what a person’s stage inlife.”
The letter said action fromemployers over the next fiveyears could make the UK a “worldleader” and urged other businessleaders to investigate what impactchanging demographics wouldhave on their organisation.
Signatories to the letter includedJane Ashcroft, chief executive atAnchor; Nick Sanderson, chief
executive officer at Audley Retire-ment; Rachael Saunders, age atwork director for Businessin the Community; ShaunCrawford, global insurancesector leader at EY; Jilly For-ster, chair at Forster Com-munications; Bruce Moore, chief executive at Housingand Care 21; Douglas An-derson, partner at Hymans
