Subject:statementoftheItalianSocietyofAnaesthesia,Analgesia,ResuscitationandIntensiveCareMedicineonthewarinSyria.In Syria never-ending bombs are currently involvingcivilian,notonlymilitarytargets.Several hospitals have been hit, some completelydestroyed.Doctors,nursesandpatientsdiedonthescene.The media informed us that among injured or deadcivilians,hundredsarechildren.At the same time, several refugees aredrowning in theMediterranean Sea in the extreme attempt to escapefromdisaster.Thus,nowayoutforthem:theydieiftheystayaswellastheyleave.Inouropinion,thisisnotonlyawar–whichwouldbeinany casemorallynotacceptable– this is a true tragedythatcanaffectthedestinyofhumanbeings.Since the end of World War II, 196 countriesacknowledgedtheprinciplethatciviliansshouldbeneverconsideredasamilitarytarget.The Convention of Geneva officially declared thisprinciple, limiting the indiscriminate violence of war.NeverthelessinSyriathislimithasbeenlargelyexceeded.Being doctors, we are not only condemning the act ofkillingcivilians,children,andhealthprofessionals,butwealsorecalltheConventionofGeneva,respectfullyaskingallGovernmentstomakeeveryeffortforrespectingtheConvention’sprinciples.
