ASU BUILDING + DESIGN COLLABORATIVE IS AN EXTENSION OF THE COLLEGE AVENUE COMMONS BUILDING, AND WORKS TO INTEGRATE THE PROGRAMS OF CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN. THE BUILDING IS SIMPLE IN FORM AND MAKES MODEST GESTURES TOWARDS THE CONTEXTUAL FORCES OF EVENT-DAY TRAFFIC AND
ASU USER TRAFFIC. DURING THE DAY, THE BUILDING WELCOMES THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE USERS TO ENGAGE IN THE LEARNING
EXPERIENCES ENCAPSULATING THE DESIGN. DURING THE NIGHT AND EVENT DAYS, THE BUILDING
BECOMES AN ENTERTAINMENT HUB.

PUBLIC VS PRIVATETHE FIRST FLOOR IS COMPLETELY DEDICATED TO THE INTERACTION BETWEEN PUBLIC AND STUDENT USERS. A CLEAR STORY ALLOWS AN ELEVATED VIEW OF THE FABRICATION LAB FROM THE STREET LEVEL, ALLOWING PUBLIC USERS TO WITNESS AND ENGAGE IN THE PROCESSES OF CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN.

UNSCRIPTEDON THE UPPER TERRACES, THE BUILDING PROVIDES INFORMAL COLLABORATION ZONES OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM SPACES AND IN-BETWEEN THE TWO WINGS OF THE DESIGN. THE ALTERNATING CIRCULATION PATHS AND CELEBRATORY STAIR INCREASES THE USE OF MANUAL CIRCULATION, WHILE ALSO PROMOTING THE CHANCE FOR IMPROMPTU MEETINGS BETWEEN STUDENTS AND FACULTY.

NORMATIVE VS. ADAPTIVETHE STRUCTURE OF THE TWO WINGS SPEAKS TO THE LEARNING AND PRACTICING SIDE OF ARCHITECTURE. WHEREAS THE NORTH ACADEMIC WING EMPLOYS A NORMATIVE, CONCRETE GRID STRUCTURE, FAMILIAR TO THE PROCESSES TAUGHT IN THAT WING, THE SOUTHERN PROFESSIONAL WING UTILIZES A MORE ADAPTIVE USE OF STRUCTURAL CONCEPTS. HERE, THE CREATIVE DISCOVERY BETWEEN STEEL, CONCRETE, AND STRUCTURE IS CELEBRATED, CREATING AN ICONIC FOLDING ENVELOPE THAT REACHES OUT TO ITS NORMATIVE COUNTERPART.

LATTIE F. COOR RE-SKINTEMPE, AZTHE LATTIE F. COOR HALL HAS POOR PERFORMANCE IN ENERGY AND COOLING USAGE, AND THE SKIN OF THE BUILDING DOES NOT MEET ASU’S 2030 CHALLENGE. THE INTENT TO BRING NATURAL LIGHTING INTO EVERY SPACE OF THE INTERIOR IS NOT BEING ACHIEVED, AND THE USE OF SHADOW BOXES CREATES A SUPER-HEATING EFFECT WITHIN THE BUILDING. AN INVERSION OF THE CIRCULATION OF THE BUILDING AND ADDITION OF A PERFORATED GLASS FIBER REINFORCED CONCRETE SKIN IS THE SOLUTION TO THESE ISSUES.

SOLUTION• REVERSED PROGRAM ALLOWING LIGHT TO CORE• PERFORATED SHADE SYSTEM FOR CURTAIN WALL COOLING• FRAMED VIEWS TO EXTERIOR
DEPTHTHE EXISTING CONDITION OF THE BUILDING CONTAINS A VARIETY OF DEPTHS WITHIN THE EXTERIOR WALL ITSELF. THE PROPOSED SKIN CONTINUES THIS DEPTH ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING AND EXPRESSES THE TRUE IDENTITY OF THE CURTAIN WALL, NOT SIMPLY A CLEAR GLASS VOLUME. THE SKIN ALSO ADDS ANOTHER LAYER FOR THE EXPRESSION OF NATURAL LIGHT INTO THE BUILDING.
SHADOW BOXESSET DIRECTLY ON THE INTERIOR SIDE OF THE GLASS FACADE.
CURTAIN WALLTHE BUTT JOINT CURTAIN WALL WRAPS AROUND ALL FOUR SIDES OF THE UPPER FLOORS OF THE BUILDING, LIKE A FLOATING ICE CUBE IN THE DESERT.
SKINGLASS FIBER REINFORCED CONCRETE SKIN COVERS THE EXISTING SHADOW BOXES TO COOL THE SUPER-HEATED CONDITIONS AND SHADES THE OPEN
VISION PANELS. STILL ALLOWS NATURAL LIGHT TO THE INTERIOR, AND FRAMES VIEWS
FROM THE BUILDING. GFRC CONTINUES THE GROUND LEVEL MATERIALITY AND TONALITY TO THE FLOATING VOLUME.

UPGRADES PERTINENT TO EACH SITE. WELCOME CENTERS, DINING HALLS, TRADING POSTS, AND ADIRONDACKS, ARE DESIGNED TO UPDATE
THE SITES, CREATE INTEREST FROM THE CAMPERS, AND REVENUE FROM DONORS. THE MASTER PLAN PACKET
CONSISTS OF SITE PLANS, FLOOR PLANS, ELEVATIONS, AND RENDERINGS.

PRESERVING PINCKNEYCHARLESTON, SCTO ACTIVATE SHUTES’ FOLLY ISLAND THROUGH THE USE OF EDUCATIONAL AND RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS, WHILE PRESERVING THE DELICATE ECOLOGY OF THE ISLAND AND INFRASTRUCTURE OF CASTLE PINCKNEY. A WELCOME CENTER PLACED ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE ISLAND, IN CONTRAST TO THE CASTLE ON THE SOUTHERN END, THE BUILDING UNVEILS THE ENTIRE ISLAND FOR THE USER TO EXPLORE.
