DesignModeler
Highlights — DesignModeler’s future status. — Small part search and removal. — Alphabetical body sort. — Feature Upgrade: New releases often perform operations more
successfully/completely. Older models can be updated using the Tools > Options menu.
— Variable blends (multiple radii are now parameteric). — Weld Surface tool.

Body/Part Sorting and renaming — RMB click on the Parts, Bodies list to sort
25 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
DesignModeler
Upgrade legacy DesignModeler models to the current version. This may improve certain operations due to the development of modeling
and repair tools. This may also cause operations to fail. Keep a backup copy of the
geometry when using this option.

Variable Blend Feature
Additional control over shapes of blends: — Parameterize start and end radii of blend edges. — Benefit: Variable blend radius control now available in Design Studies,
optimization etc..

DesignModeler
Weld body generator for shells. — Creates a separate body as a weld region (has it’s own thickness assigned).

Meshing
29 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Geometry and Meshing Share Topology versus Mesh Based Connections
— Share Topology (Formed Parts in DesignModeler) modifies the geometry with imprints when the geometry is attached in Mechanical such that the bodies share a common face.
• Can results in additional edge segments that need to be cleaned with Virtual Topology.
• May affect the topological consistency of bodies making them not sweepable. • Cannot use parallel meshing.
— Mesh Based Connections do not require shared topology at part boundaries. • May require face imprinting (with the Extrude feature) to align corresponding faces
on bodies. • May require a Matched Mesh control to align nodes at the adjoining faces. • Separate bodies allows for parallel meshing! • Works with both shell and solid bodies.
30 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Connecting Bodies
Option 1 – Align at the geometry level (DM or SCDM): — Create a “Weld Body” or use an extension to align the geometry. — Shared Topology can be used to enforce common nodes (non distributed
meshing) — A bonded contact region can be defined in Mechanical (allows distributed
meshing)
31 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Connecting Bodies
Option 2 – Mesh Based Connections — Leave the gap in place and use a “Mesh Based Connection” in Mechanical to
morph the mesh and connect with shared nodes. — Limited to shell bodies — Allows for distributed meshing.
32 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Connecting Bodies
Option 3 – Node Merging — Imprint faces and mesh bodies separately (allow distributed meshing). — Use the new “Node Merge” feature:
• Works on shells to shell and solid to solid connections. • May require a Match Mesh setting.
33 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Meshed Based Connections
Chair lift example: — Shared Topology is NOT used in the shell model of lift chair. — Parallel meshing and meshed based connections will be used.
34 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Meshed Based Connections
The mesh is generated on a body by body basis (no shared topology is enforced).
35 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Meshed Based Connections
With the Mesh Edit tool (new at v16) you can define scoped body groups with automatic and manual mesh connection generation.
36 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Meshed Based Connections
The connections alter the existing mesh to force nodal connectivity.

Mechanical

Mechanical Assembly
Model assembly tools facilitate a component to system design process. Individual component models can be imported into a common project.
— Import of Mechanical database (*.mechdat) — Import of MAPDL models (*.cdb) via the External Model Utility.
40 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
Assembly is accomplished by adding a new analysis system to the project and dragging and dropping the component systems onto it.
Import properties are displayed in the Properties window of the assembly system.
41 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
Object renaming of the component systems can be defined by the user. Number of copies and rigid transformations of the components are defined
here as needed.
42 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
Component transformations are also possible inside Mechanical using the Model > Worksheet tool.
43 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
An assembly of Mechanical models retains the original geometry from the components.
Items are sorted into folders based on the user specification (system name by default).
44 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
Items that are included in the assembly process are: — Geometry (both flexible and rigid bodies, no mass bodies) — Coordinate systems — Connections (Contact regions only) — Mesh (mesh controls and mesh connections stay at the component level) — Named Selections
45 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
Additional contact (manual or automatic) can be generated between component models.
46 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
Adding a MAPDL legacy model (.cdb mesh based) or other via the External Model Utility uses FE Modeler to construct geometry from the finite element facets.
The “skin detection” is controlled in the Properties window. Note that Nodal Components can be included in the transfer.
47 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
Exploded views are available for the visible geometry centered at a specified coordinate system.
48 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
Tree filtering is possible by visibility, type, model, etc..
49 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
Grouping common entities can be done by selecting multiple entities and a RMB click
50 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
Multiple bodies can be renamed in a single operation:
51 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
Group renaming is accomplished by selecting like entities and specifying a common name.
52 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
Use imported MAPDL Named Selections to create contact regions.
53 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Assembly
Note: Bolt Pretension cannot be defined on surface skins of an imported MAPDL model (body and CSYS definition only).
The Object Generator is useful for coping common items like Bolt Pretension.
These items can be grouped for convenience.
54 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Parametric Assemblies
All standard input parameters (geometry, mesh, material, loading) can be defined at the component levels.
Output quantities can be extracted from assembly model. Design Studies and Optimization can be accomplished with the Parameter
Set and DesignXplorer.
55 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
Mechanical Speed Enhancements
Improved Geometry Attachment Time Contact Detection Performance Model Assembly Performance Improvements Source Result File Access for Linked Analyses.
— For a Thermal-Stress, Submodeling, or One-way Acoustic Coupling analysis, the application no longer copies the source result files to the downstream system. Instead, the downstream system now directly accesses the source result file. This reduces disk space usage when running linked analyses.
56 www.caeai.com www.caeai.com
DesignXplorer Updates
Parameter Filtering (requires a correlation study) When you save a design point you can set a desired point to current and
post process in the project rather than opening it separately. ACT and DX
— DX now supports ACT extensions for external sampling methods. — There is a MATLAB optimization extension to expose MATLAB optimization
algorithms.
