NEWS BRIEFS NEW YORK CENTRAL CARLOADINGS . . . for the month of March totaled 244,177, an increase of 2,890 (or 1.2 per cent) from March a year ago.
In the three-month period from January 1st to March 31, 1964, New York Central carloading totals climbed to 713,363, an increase of 20,601. The three-month total is an increase of three per cent over the same three-month period in 1964.
• • • INCREASE IN NET INCOME . . . for the first quarter of 1964 is $1,035,176 (or 16 cents per share), the New York Central has announced. During the same quarter last year, the Central had a loss of $7,887,122. This year's quarterly earnings represent an improvement of $1.36 per share.
Alfred E. Perlman, President of Central, reported that revenue during the first quarter of 1964 brought in $119,861,917, an increase of $7,041,304, or 6.2 per cent. Mr. Perlman also reported that even with the increased traffic, operating expenses decreased $551,582, or 0.4 per cent.
• • • SPENDING OF U.S. RAILROADS . . . for fuel, material and supplies rose to $1,401,424,000 in 1963, according to the Association of American Railroads. The total expenditure—largest annual spending increase in the past five years—is an increase of seven per cent over 1962, when $1,311,293,000 was spent.
• • • BILL CURBING SEAWAY PROMOTION.. . has been introduced by Senator I. Glenn Beall (R-Md.). The bill (S.2641) would prohibit the St. Lawrence seaway Development Corporation from "engaging in publicity or promotional activities such as free or paid advertising; solicitations of cargoes; and publication of ocean, rail, port, or motor carrier rate or service comparisons." Senator Beall said the practice of using taxpayers' dollars to promote inland ports at the expense of coastal ports "is contrary to the national interest."
• • • RAILROAD PASSENGER TRAVEL . . . last year was equivalent to a 98-mile trip for every person in the United States. Stated differently, railroads in 1963 produced approximately 18.5 billion passenger-miles of service. This is equal to carrying 15,540 people from New York to San Francisco every day of the year.

RECTANGULAR TANK CAR offers much greater volume than conventional cylinder type. Surging of liquid is controlled by system of floating baffles (shown in cut-away section).
STEEL INSERT at track intersection, known as a " f r o g , " is hardened by wrapping it in sheet explosive and detonating with common blasting cap. Shock waves penetrate and harden the steel to depth of one inch.
