Analytical Chromatography of Small Molecules: Practical

Skills Development Workshop (11th

– 16th

April 2011)

Chromatography is well-established

analytical technique for qualitative and quantitative

assays of complex samples. It found applications in

almost every field from pharmaceutical to biological

fluids. Chromatography evolved from paper (visual

detection) to today’s micro/capillary

chromatography (Mass Spec and NMR detection).

The coupling of chromatographic science with PC

based software has revolutionized the analysis by

modern equipments. Training of such equipments is

however required to generate useful data especially

in the disciplines which do not cover analytical

chemistry as ‘course’ in basic education. This

workshop will focus on basic theory followed by

hands-on experiments and exercises on liquid and

gas chromatography. Participants will be trained

about Do’s and Don’ts, maintenance and method

development procedures on both techniques.

Applications of liquid chromatography in

pharmaceutical and food analysis along with sample

preparation will be used as models for training. Gas

chromatography of oil/fat and pesticide

determination along with sample preparation

techniques will serve as model assay procedures.

Who should attend?

Fresh graduates, technicians, faculty members from

natural and life sciences or pharmacy

What will you learn?

• Basic theory of chromatographic

separations

• What makes a Chromatograph

• Selecting chromatographic technique for

your application

• Selecting working mode of GC or HPLC

• How to identify and quantify compounds

• Tips to achieve optimum separations

• Sample preparation for chromatographic

separations

• Liquid chromatography of pharmaceutical

compounds and plant phenolics

• Gas chromatography of oils, fats and

pesticides
