Methods and Analytical
Techniques
Data-Driven Strategic Planning
• Strategies based only on subjective impressions are too easily swayed by misleading information, personal agenda’s or “flavour of the day” approaches to economic development
• It is important to have a realistic expectation about the potential results of an economic development program and avoid portraying the community as something other than it is
• A solid understanding of the community directly influences the ability to accomplish or meet community goals and objectives successfully
5
Overview of Past Tools
• The Ministry has been maintaining two economic analysis resources since 2003:
6
1. Public facing, web-based tool (REDDI)
2. Internal, Excel spreadsheet tools available through Ministry staff
7
What is Analyst?
• A web-based tool that provides data on regional economies and human capital and then makes it easy to use
• Helps you better understand your region, and then make good decisions about how to build strong regional economies
• Available for all municipalities in Ontario and Canada
• Users can create their own custom regions
8
How Can Analyst Help a Community and/or Region?

• What are the occupations in high demand by industries?
• How many local jobs are filled by commuters versus local residents?
• In what industries are specific occupations growing and/or projected to grow? Which are declining?
9
How Can Analyst Help a Community and/or Region
