Monica Barbero – Analysis and design of geotechnical structures and earthworks 2
Main aims
• Providing the necessary tools to assess the safety of new and existing geotechnical works with the aim to
mitigate the risk for people, facilities and infrastructure because of geotechnical problems
• Giving the ability of analyzing a geotechnical problem, identifying the engineering solution and designing it,
by means of analytic and numerical tools
• Providing the basis for the design of geotechnical works in all its stages, starting from the site
characterization to the work execution
• Teaching to produce a complete and rigorous technical report
These objectives will be achieved by LECTURES and TUTORIALS
Main contents
• Basics of rock mechanics (for students who did not attend Rock Mechanics course)
• Geotechnical surveys and in situ tests
• Analysis of the stability of soil and rock natural slopes and excavations
• Geotechnical works for mitigating the risk due to soil and rock instability problems
• Earth works and design procedures
