Analysis of Petroleum for Trace Metals. Robert A. Hofstader, Oscar I. Mil-ner, and John H. Runnels, χ + 189 pages. American Chemical Society, 1155 16th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036. 1976. $21.50

In 1972 an ambitious intercompany project was initiated by five of the major oil companies to develop analytical methods for the determination of trace metals in oil. The companies participating in this project were Atlantic Richfield Co., Chevron Research Co., Exxon Research and Engineering Co., Mobil Research and Development Corp., and Phillips Petroleum Co. The results of this effort were later presented at a symposium entitled "Analysis of Petroleum for Trace Metals", sponsored by the Divisions of Analytical and Petroleum Chemistry at the 169th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. The contents of this book, which are derived from the symposium, present the methods developed by the participating companies for the

analyses of 13 elements of environmental concern. In the introductory chapters the book deals with sampling procedures, standards, storage and stability, contamination, and sample preparation. The chapters also discuss the different methods available—including increasingly popular elec-troanalytical methods—and emphasize variations of atomic absorption spectroscopy, the major technique used in the book. Step-by-step directions for the determination of 13 elements are then presented, with discussion on the finer points of trace analysis of petroleum and its products. The 13 elements discussed are antimony, arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, vanadium, and selenium. This book is the 156th volume of the "Advances in Chemistry Series".

EPA Manual of Chemical Methods for Pesticides and Devices. 1000 pages. The Association of Official Analytical Chemists, Box 540, Benjamin Franklin Station, Washington, D.C. 20044. 1976. $27

This manual presents over 200 analytical methods currently used by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state laboratories in enforcing state and federal environmental laws. These methods include analyses of commercial agricultural formulations such as pesticides, germicides, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and rodenticides by GC, HPLC, IR, UV, AA, and classical chemical procedures. The manual, compiled jointly by the EPA, the Association of American Pesticide Control Officials, and the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC), is to be used as a supplement to the 12th edition (1975) of AOAC's "Official Methods of Analysis". As such, the procedures in this manual have not achieved AOAC official status through collaborative testing. However, most of the methods have been partially validated in the EPA and state laboratories. The AOAC official methods, if available, take precedence over procedures in this manual. When a method receives official status, it will be deleted from the manual. The loose-leaf format of the manual is designed to accommodate easily additions or deletions.
